The Suicide Squad director James Gunn recently revealed that Warner Bros. offered him his choice of projects when he first began negotiating with the studio. The filmmaker passed on Superman, but there was another major DC character he might have been interested in taking a crack at had the option been on the table.
While speaking to the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gunn reiterated that WB execs were very keen to get him on board a new Superman project, but he simply didn't connect with the character. However, it might have been a very different story if they'd asked him to helm a Batman movie.
“I’m not saying I’d never be interested in Superman, but if it was Batman, which Matt [Reeves] was already doing, it might’ve felt differently because I understand Batman. I understand Harley Quinn; I don’t understand every character.”
As he points out, Matt Reeves was already working on The Batman at the time, but with so many Bat-related projects on the horizon, there's always a chance Gunn could get to leave his stamp on The Dark Knight down the line. As for Supes, it sounds like the Man of Steel's canine companion is more up Gunn's alley!
In the same interview, the director outlined his idea for a Krypto movie.
“I considered doing a Krypto movie which I thought would be really fun, but that shows you where my head’s at,” he explained. “I wasn’t interested in doing a [traditional] Superman thing—a superpowered dog from Krypton, running around a city, destroying it, while Superman tries to track him down and get him. That seemed interesting to me.”
