BOX OFFICE: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Pacing To Earn Biggest Opening Weekend For A 2D Film

Early tracking indicates that Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises will have a higher opening weekend than 2008's The Dark Knight, and isn't too far behind Marvel's The Avengers.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that pre-release tracking indicates Warner Bros. and Christopher Nolan's Batman finale, The Dark Knight Rises, will score a higher opening weekend than the last film, The Dark Knight. The 2008 superhero flick grossed $158M in its opening weekend, and is currently the top opening 2D film (and was the top opening film overall until 3D films Harry Potter & The Dealthy Hallows: Part 2 and The Avengers were released).

While tracking numbers for The Dark Knight Rises aren't that far behind The Avengers, the "epic conclusion" to Nolan's Batman trilogy lacks the benefit of a 3D release and has a much longer running time than Avengers. Still, TDKR is opening in several hundred IMAX theaters; the fact that it's the final installment in the Batman trilogy should also increase interest.

According to those who have seen Monday's tracking numbers, unaided awareness for The Dark Knight Rises is 19 compared to 20 for The Avengers; first choice is 30 for The Dark Knight Rises versus 33 for The Avengers; definite interest in The Dark Knight Rises is 66 compared to 65 for The Avengers.

The Dark Knight Rises is set to hit theaters July 20th.

I'm expecting it to out-do Harry Potter 7.2 easily. It'd be tough to top Avengers' opening, but I wouldn't say it's impossible. Expecting something in between $170-200M.

Doesn't matter how much money it makes. It could make 200 dollars but it's still going to be one of the best movies of all time. Unlike Transfor-I mean, Avengers.

This is not a surprise. At all. Of course it will score the biggest 2D OW. Final film in the Nolan's Batman trilogy, end of en era, it's done. Everyone knows what they are getting, either you'll show up or you won't. I say it will break the OW record, but that's just me.

it's a shame that movies must go 3d in order to draw in more people/money... what a ruse! Tell a story and the movie will sell itself!

I hope it does well at the Oscars. I'll be appalled if Hans Zimmer's score isn't nominated for Best Score. I'll be thrilled if it manages to grab Best Picture/Director nods.

Hathaway is getting an Best Supporting Actress Oscar nom for TDKR for sure, I'd love to see her win. How awesome would it be for someone to win an Oscar for playing Catwoman.

The only thing hurting her chances is the fact shes also tipped for Best Actress for Les Mis.

THIS IS HATHAWAY'S YEAR!

3D for a summer blockbuster the equivalent to a porn star getting a boob job.

@Azazel1: I certainly hope so. If Inception, Up, Toy Story 3, or even Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close could get a Best Picture nom, then TDKR certainly has a chance. I just hope that the Academy doesn't shun Nolan again.

Amazing pics.

@yoss

Box office doesn't matter, but it's still nice to know the film will do well.

It won't beat Avengers, but big deal. As long as I and others enjoy it, that's all that really matters.
Knightrider
Knightrider - 7/9/2012, 2:57 PM
@Yoss It doesn't prove quality I think was the argument, everyone knows box office matters in terms of a movie being judged successful or not. Take Avatar, terrible movie, but considered successful and getting sequels because on the money it made.
FilmsFan
FilmsFan - 7/9/2012, 2:59 PM
TDKR was also going to be in 3D... It was NOLAN who resisted & didn't let that happen.

So if MOS& next Batman film is in 3D ... It's NOT Nolan's job to let them stick to 2D!
All the other Studio's including WB want every film possible in 3D; just for MONEY!!

Nolan is being true with his Artist morals & principles ... He is not responsible for rest of the world!!

Even without 3D TDKR doing 170-180 is gona be an Incredible feat!
Hope it does more & does what it Deserves!!

no i haven't read your comment on the man of steel article,i read a few & posted my comment.

you know people don't have to watch a film in 3d,its because they want to & if there is a demand for it,they'll keep doing it.

That's not what this article claims, it says TDKR is running slightly behind The Avengers.

It might be the better film, but I think Avengers will take the box office crown this year.

It is a damn shame all this fanboy infighting.. As comic book fans shouldn't we just be happy that movies based off comics are doing so well now??? It should be a time for everyone to "come together" but no... Jeez..
Knightrider
Knightrider - 7/9/2012, 3:22 PM
@CyberBishop Agreed, despite what people may think about Avengers, it seems like it has paved the way for a JL film, which can only be a good thing.

Despite us all knowing which character belongs to who, many mainstream audiences don't, so they don't care if they are watching Marvel or DC, in fact I would not be surprised if I get people asking me after TDKR, if Batman will be in next Avengers.
