The Dark Knight Trilogy and the Oscars

Brett Easton Ellis tweeted earlier that there was zero love for the Dark Knight Rises at a packed Academy screening. Assuming this is true, does the film deserve any (non tech) awards or does it even matter?

Regardless of your thoughts or taste, you can't deny what the trilogy has done for Comic Book movies, it added a dark gritty edge to the genre, which was most certainly needed after the very silly Batman & Robin. But aside from the comic book fans, it captured the interest of people who have never picked up a comic book in their lives.

We were given a fantastic cast, giving fantastic performances, all giving some of the greatest performances of their lives and sadly for Heath Ledger, the last great performance, which was given an Oscar for supporting actor.

The fans have loved them. The critics have loved them. So why doesn't the Academy?

Now the Academy has a long history of shunning fan favourite blockbusters and deciding to select more obscure films, the Blockbuster is reduced to the technical awards, rarely seeing actor, actress, director, script or best picutre success, let alone nominations.

Is that why it will be left out? Because it opened in so many screens, to so much fanfare across the world? Does the Academy not like succesful films? I don't see how it could, if there was no money being made there would be no industry. So does it see itself as the champion of the independent film? Knowing that they can boost box office figures by nominating them? But surely the best and only the best should be picked.

So are they just simply out of touch? I believe so.

The Dark Knight most certainly deserved a best picture nomination. More than TDKR, but it is deserving none the less. Every cog was working as intended, there is no weak points to the movie, the only difference between the two is there is no outstanding part, such as the Joker. So is it the perfect movie? No, but i dare say its one of the closest we have ever been shown, and isn't that exactly the sort of thing that should be rewarded?

But the real question is, putting aside Rotten Tomatoes, box office figures and its budget, does it even matter if it gets recognised by them?

I'll let you decide, but what i will say is this:

“There are other forms of immortality.”

If Avengers or TDKR do not win best picture, no cbm will

Awards dont matter in the least for movies like this. The only time I would think an award would be important is if it brings some attention to a smaller movie that most people have not heard of but will check out after the fact. The Academy Awards is just a fashion show.

Not important, no. But still, would be nice to see somebody walk away with one. I believe Hans Zimmer more than anybody personally. Have all three albums on my ipod, no other score has managed to get there.

ROTK was 2003, and the most recent. But look at the last 4/5 years atleast. 2005 everyone went mad for Brokeback Mountain, Crash won instead to much suprise. TDK was better than Inception, it deserved a nomination but lost out to SlumDog Millionaire, Frost/Nixon, Milk, The Reader and Benjamin Button. All good films, but Oscar bait.

I never accused them of not awarding big films, they have, but that's stopping, they changed the system in 2009 which allowed Avatar in, this film is better than that.

I just dont see how a packed screen could have been entirely disappointed by it as they say, when so many would say differently.

It all depends on the competition. I'd really like to see Bale get one for his perfomance as Bruce Wayne particularly. Perhap, even Anne for Selina.
Probably won't happen though. I think CBM should host an award show. All geeks invited. Have everyone show up in cosplay! Pizza and beer for everyone! Hells to the ye-ahh!

Don't see any cbm winning an oscar for anything other than technical or sound aspects or acting.

Avatar got nominated to best picture. There is no reason whatsoever for Avegners and TDKR not to be nominated.

I love TDKR, and hope it gets nominated and takes some nods home. But with the Hobbit coming out this december, much closer to the AA deadline. I dont really know whta are the chances.
CBM rock and the AA should really pay close attention to it. I am willing to bet that there will be more Great CBM in the coming years, now that Nolan has paved the way.

Will it win? Don't know, nobody knows. Will it get nominated? With 10 slots open, undoubtedly it could. I think it will.

Neither tdk nor tdkr were/are deserving of recieving any sort of best film award recognition. Especially not tdkr which is COMPLETE GARBAGE!!!

No conscientious person who has status in the arts and sciences is going to award a movie where the most notorious criminal, a MAN with GREEN HAIR and WHITE FACE-PAINT walks through a busy hospital unnoticed. There are numerous plot holes and plot contrivances in tdk that are as bad as the worst in truly bad movies like gl and b&r. The only difference is the movie's serious tone and it's confidence in it's own self-importance. However whilst this may fool the feeble-minded masses, it will not fool truly intelligent people with discerning taste.

tdkr is even worse. It's an atrociously bad movie with no redeeming features. There is a post on the IMDB forums by a very intelligent person who presents 71 reasons why tdkr is bad movie. EVERYONE should read this. Interestingly a co-worker of mine, a fellow medical professional, saw this piece of crap last night and started listing many of the things on that 71 list without ever hearing of it. She gave tdkr a 1/10.

Stop wishing crap to win awards.
