Those are fascinating connections to the Wizard of Oz. I do think that those similarities are a bit forced and the themes (which I think is the true measure of an homage) don't match up. But at some subconscious level, I can kind of see the broader tropes that tie together and the way that you present it makes me wonder if we don't unintentionally tell the same stories over and over but con't recognize them because of the trappings of the story.

@Forthas - I think the 3 overt references right in the dialogue tip the scales in my favor.

I agree that a good homage copies themes, but you can still make an homage without doing that, it just may not be as good.
