Even BLADE Star Mahershala Ali's Attorney Can't Believe The Movie Hasn't Began Production Yet

Mahershala Ali's attorney has shared her thoughts on the fact Blade still hasn't started shooting, admitting it's unprecedented in her career. We also have a minor update on current plans for the reboot...

Is Blade cursed? At this stage, it's getting harder to escape the feeling that it might be!

Marvel Studios first announced the reboot while closing out its Hall H panel at the  2019 San Diego Comic-Con. Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali hit the stage to join Kevin Feige, confirming he would play the MCU's Daywalker in a moment which shocked everyone.

The pandemic followed, as did a voice cameo in Eternals, but things haven't progressed well in the years since. Blade has lost several creatives, with original director Bassam Tariq leaving over "creative differences." We also learned this week that Yann Demange left the project back in March.

In terms of writers, Eric Pearson is penning the latest draft after Stacy Osei-Kuffour, Beau DeMayo, Michael Starrbury, Nic Pizzolatto, and Michael Green all attempted to crack at the screenplay.

The Hollywood Reporter has a piece up on Hollywood attorneys, including Ali's representative Shelby Weiser.

"Mahershala Ali will be boarding the next Jurassic World and toplining Marvel's Blade...someday," the trade notes before sharing a direct quote from Weiser: "That deal was in 2019, and they still haven’t shot it, which is pretty much the craziest thing in my professional experience."

Despite that scathing assessment, Ali reportedly remains committed to Blade and it sounds like everyone involved wants to get the movie right. While it was once set to be a period piece (we've even heard of a draft revolving around the vampire hunter's daughter), Daniel Richtman has reiterated recent reports about the movie now being set in the present day.

The idea is said for it to lead directly into a Midnight Sons movie which is being written by Blade Runner 2049's Michael Green. Chances are Pearson is contributing to his Blade script to add MCU references, a normal occurrence for many Marvel Studios titles.

"We’re working on it. That’s the best I could tell you," Ali said of the project last December following reports he'd considered leaving the movie. "I’m really encouraged with the direction of the project. I think we’ll be back at it relatively soon."

"I’m sincerely encouraged in terms of where things are at and who’s on board and who’s leading the way as far as the writing of the script and the directing and all that," the actor added. "So that’s the extent of what I can tell you."

Needless to say, it's looking increasingly unlikely that Blade will meet its planned November 7, 2025 release date.

Well 5 years certainly isn't the longest I've heard. But still I don't see it happening.

@UniqNo -

Off the top of my head I can't think of any examples of an actor signing on to a role and 5yrs later there isn't even a finished script.

I'd imagine it's at least a very rare occurrence .

@TrentCrimm -recent 2 that comes to mind are The Rock for Black Adam, and Ford with the last Indiana jones

@Malatrova15 - No one likes being given an unbelievably exciting opportunity, and then being dragged along until it's just up in the air.

@IAmAHoot - I get what you mean, but let's not forget that Ali actually approached Feige about the character and role. Which to me actually shows him being more passionate for the project rather than an actor auditioning for what's available... I beleive it was never part of the original plan.

@UniqNo - Aye, Feige said they were thinking of new supernatural ideas to explore and Ali came in and said 'Blade'. Here's an article with Feige from roughly five years ago lol:-

@Sabre81 - Yeah, but and Fiege wouldn't have agreed to a deal if he didn't see the benefit of it, but I feel their ideas probably are no longer aligned. I'm just guessing though...and we're also getting F4 alot later than we originally expected so I sure a few things are in flux.

@UniqNo - Fair enough, and I didn't know the details about that. I'm also just speaking in general, partly for myself. I just missed out on a job that I really wanted because I hadn't heard back from them in too long, and while busy getting hired for another job they got back to me, but circumstantially couldn't break my commitment. Now I got to do another job that I liked enough, but not while the other one was on the table. And it pays less and it's far more tedious. Gotta wait at least a couple of months before I can (hopefully) re-apply to the other. His situation is obviously very different, but even for those rich folk having your upcoming employment (and the pay that comes with it) get mucked with is not for anyone, and mentally gets rather frustrating (to put it politely).

@IAmAHoot - ah that sucks man, but at least knowing you were successful is something to hold you until then. But if it took them so long to get back to you, that might be a poor reflection on the company, either way I Hope it works out and it leads to better choices for you.

Sabre81 - 6/15/2024, 10:15 AM
@UniqNo - Yes, the benefits were clear in what he was saying about the supernatural avenues and Ali wanted Blade, which Feige also said he had thought about. All right there.

That was 2019, however, and quite correct that those ideas back then are not as fitting to what they are now.

@UniqNo - If trying to make it part of the narrative is what's holding it up then I wish they would just make it stand alone and release it like they did Werewolf By Night.
UniqNo
UniqNo - 6/15/2024, 11:10 AM
@cubrn - Yeah, I'm sure Ali's contract is in favour of a theatrical release and other tie in stuff.
JFerguson

This project is being forced into a phase about the multiverse. Does Feige really want it being the black sheep of the multiverse saga?

Just shelve it and give Ali a rain check for the future
cubrn
cubrn - 6/15/2024, 11:04 AM
@JFerguson - Or make it a stand alone like Werewolf by Night. Or even just tie it in to the characters in that.

This movie isn't happening, Marvel just doesn't want to make it official for whatever reason. Does anyone remember the Ryan Johnson trilogy of Star Wars movies that were announced back in 2017 ? those were never officially cancelled and are still being "discussed".

Well, I see this as a win for the fans. Why? If the rumors are correct, this movie was going to be a huge woke mess.

The movie should be about Blade and everyone is just there to support Blade, not the other way around.

Disney wants to give diverse characters to diverse directors but they seem to keep picking indie directors who are almost obligated to go full Banksy a’la film w/ big corporate money.

The agenda should be good story telling.

Joh Houston-Rocketer
Favreu-Zatura
Branaght/JM Strazinsky-Shakespear, Thor and Babylon

Edgar wRight Scott Pilgrim
And they got a comitte with Brian Bendis,Joe Quesada etc.

@NathanielX - You make some good points! Branaugh Was definitely a huge get for Marvel early on, but zatura didn't make favreau a safe bet, whedon was definitely seen as a TV guy. The Russo Brothers were TV comedy guys, Louis Leterrier had only done the transporter films. I'm just saying, they've been taking some chances to save a buck since the beginning

Honestly, it would probably be better for both Marvel and Ali if he moved on, and Marvel picked someone younger. Questions of his age came up when he was originally cast, and now it's going to be almost a decade before we potentially see him on screen?

An urban modern-day warrior fighting vampires. Seems a simple and straight-forward enough of a concept and yet, somehow, the House-of-Mouse and their little meat-puppet Feige just can't figure it out... SMH 🙄

If his attorney is speaking publicly about the whole thing, it really doesn't look like a good sign for the film ever being released.

@MotherGooseUPus - They should be, how difficult can it be? I think it's a case of some directors what to do it one way and Disney are no you need to this pointless character in there.

Blade's daughter.
