CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Directors Tease SPIDER-MAN's Relationship With IRON MAN Moving Forward
We obviously already know that Robert Downey Jr. will return as Iron Man in Spider-Man: Homecoming, but it sounds like his relationship with Peter Parker could be even more significant than first imagined...
We've known since the release of that much talked about trailer that Spider-Man will be #TeamIronMan in Captain America: Civil War, while the news that Robert Downey Jr. will appear in Spider-Man: Homecoming made it clear these two will be spending quite a bit of time together moving forward. It's a friendship which makes sense though, especially when you look back at the comics.
Talking to IGN recently, Joe Russo explained what it is that makes their Spider-Man so unique and had this to say in response to the interviewer mentioning that the scenes between Peter and Tony are a highlight and his hopes to see that relationship continue. "Absolutely, and it's going to. I think Downey is officially signed on now to Spider-Man: Homecoming, and I think that's what so fun about it. That's what's different in terms of this interpretation of Spider-Man. Two things: one, is that we cast an actor who is very close in age to a high schooler. Tom is really the first young actor to portray the part, and he has an incredible vulnerability and a certain confidence married together that create this very youthful and exciting character. Two, the other thing that's compelling is he's now in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he can interact with the characters in that universe."
As for how we should expect to see things between Peter and Tony evolve, he added: "I think that this mentor relationship that Tony has developed with Peter Parker is probably one of the most interesting things the universe has moving forward." Iron Man being a mentor to Spider-Man is an interesting (and to be expected) dynamic, but does it mean we'll only see Downey Jr. appear out of the suit in order to give the young hero some advice, or should we look forward to a full on team-up?
