Joe Johnston to direct Captain America flick

It appears that Joe Johnston has been signed to driect the heroes first movie. This is the guy that has brought us such classics such as Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, and Jumanji. Now those movies do not seem to qualify him for such a movie as Cap's, there are many other things he has done. He was the visual arts director on three Star Wars movies, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. As well he directed Jurassic Park III. Though this is the only true action/suspense movie that he has directed. However he is currently helming Universals new The Wolf Man movie due out later this year. Now it is these last few that spark my interest. Clearly he has the expeience in the visual effects job, and im sure that experience could help him when making a movie such as Captain America. As for his directing skills. I am waiting to see this new Wolf Man movie to judge for myself, what quality of work this guy can produce.

i dont think this is any more than a rumour-Marvel picked quality directors for Hulk, Iron Man and Thor-Cap is one of their most important characters, i cant see them picking this guy as director!

It would be good enough for me if they just put some Cap clips into 'Saving Private Ryan'. Hahaahaaha

No i disagree, i feel Marvel hit the spot with this guy, he really is the man for THIS job. Im not saying he's the greatest director ever or anything like that, but just look at what he's done, and the style that is intricate in all his work, visually and character wise, and the type of stories he chooses to direct and create. Watch the pattern and you'll see what a well crafted film he'll make for old Cap.

You are the man, I loved Hidalgo. I was looking at the movies this guy did and none of them really stand out as being great, but Hidalgo was an epic movie. Thank you for renewing my faith in this guy.

I know what you mean and agree. I hope that will translate onto this film.

you know if it were up to me i would have Spielberg direct it. Not only is he an all around amazing director but he has made some very good WWII movies such as Saving Private Ryan. Also i do not think it would be a terrible idea to have Tom Hanks involved. He is really into WWII and could provide some good insite i think. He help make the HBO special Band of Brothers a while back. Thats what i think this pic should look like to me. Somehow they should have those two guys involved

ryanjdrf1992 @ spielberg and hanks were BOTH producers for band of brothers, not just hanks.

As much as I love Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers, I fear that if both were a part of the movie it would be considered a superhero ripoff.

He looks like meatloaf. Hi Instigator.

We should check his movies. Directors always pic their leads from the films they've done in the past.

Joe Johnston was hand-picked by Spielberg to do Jurassic Park III.

As an aside.

InstigatorGIRL? Is that your actual pic? Nice.

@Betty. He directed Jumanji so we may be seeing a little Robin Williams/Cap action. He did Hidalgo so we could see some Viggo Mortenson/Cap action lo..that wouldn't be that bad actually. And Rick Moranis for Bucky!
THEHAWK
THEHAWK - 6/2/2009, 12:06 AM
Honestly Hidalgo is enough to qualify him for this. Jumanji was good too it was very unique. He would probably bring an unique take on the film.

I say we give it a shot, Marvel has been on the ball so far with the directors:

Jon Favreau for Ironman and Avengers
Lewis Leterrier for Incredible Hulk

The amazing Kenneth Branagh for Thor.

I say give this shmo a chance.

@Hawk: Hidalgo and Jumanji are great movies and definatally very unique! We should give this guy a chance. :D

A lot of the bad sh*t that contributes to a movie being bad/awful has to do with the screenplay so you can't always blame the director. I say give the guy a chance

Now with that being said, the guys who wrote both Transformers movies also wrote the screenplay for Star Trek. I'm willing to bet you can see where I'm going with this:

Star Trek: very very solid film.
Reason: Great director and great screenplay

Transformers: not so solid.
Reason: Michael "all my movies look and sound the same" Bay.

I rest my case.
TheMyth
TheMyth - 6/2/2009, 5:09 AM
@InstigatorGirl: T-Rex could be Cap... wtf that was random lol. Like the first time I watched Jimmy Neutron with my kid and at the end of the show a 3-eyed monkey turns around and says, "Hi. I'm Paul." Dunno, caught me off guard, I visualized, then nearly pissed myself.

Hidalgo rocked. JP3 is the only let down I can think of from this guy, and that was a decent movie when you consider the acting and character involvement. I think he is a good choice, the guy has a humility in his style that is perfect for Cap and he could probably bring great inspiration to the actor portraying him. Jensen Ackles for Cap!!!!
alten2345
alten2345 - 6/2/2009, 7:11 AM
@Themyth

F*ck Jensen Ackles lol:) He was on Days of Our Lives and Dawson's Creek for sh*t's sake. Yes I know everybody thinks he's fantastic on Supernatural but I just don't see him as Cap.

By the by I wouldn't get your hopes up on him playing Cap. I'm sure you know this already but he's rumored to be cast in Resident Evil 4 as Leon Kennedy although he might be done filming that in time to film Cap.

PS I'm sure Jensen Ackles is a great actor and I'm just busting your balls:)
