Anthony Russo Reflects On CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER's Legacy And Teases Next Comic Book Movie

Anthony Russo has opened up on Captain America: The Winter Soldier's 10-year anniversary and hypes up his and Joe's next comic book movie, The Electric State starring Millie Bobby Brown. Check it out...

It's been 5 years since Avengers: Endgame was released and, believe it or not, 10 years since Captain America: The Winter Soldier first hit the big screen.

The latter was a game-changer for Chris Evans' Steve Rogers, with directors Joe and Anthony Russo - who only had filmmaking experience in the comedy realm at the time - making Cap one of the MCU's biggest badasses.

Talking to Total Film, Anthony addressed The Winter Soldier's 10-year anniversary by saying, "It makes me feel really old! It was honestly a thrill. I mean that whole period was so immersive and thrilling for us. We basically entered the MCU on that movie and exited it seven years later with Endgame."

"That whole ride was like a rollercoaster that more and more people kept joining. We started working with Marvel in 2012 and Endgame released in 2019," he continues. "I mean, when you think about it only being seven years, that’s a lot to pack in - four movies in seven years."

Since Avengers: Endgame, the Russo Brothers have shifted focus to their production label, AGBO. They've produced some great movies, but their directing efforts haven't been quite as successful as their MCU work, with Cherry and The Gray Man drawing mixed reviews.

Next up is another comic book adaptation, though, with The Electric State starring Millie Bobby Brown. It arrives on Netflix later this year and is based on the graphic novel of the same name by Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag.

Anthony calls it a "really wonderful book." For those of you who aren't familiar with the property, it follows a runaway teenager and her small toy robot as they travel through a strange American landscape searching for her missing brother, where the ruins of gigantic battle drones litter the countryside, along with the discarded trash of a high-tech consumerist society addicted to a virtual-reality system.

"It was written by [Christopher] Markus and [Stephen] McFeely, who wrote all of our Marvel films and who are partners in our company [AGBO]," Anthony notes. "So, it's a very exciting movie in the sense that it's a big fantasy adventure in the spirit of fantasy adventure films that we've made in the past in some ways."

"And it's the first time since our Marvel work that the four of us have made a movie in that space. Yeah. So it's exciting for us."

There's no indication that any members of this foursome plan on making a Marvel return, leaving Marvel Studios to find another creative team for its next Avengers movies (Loki scribe Michael Waldron is currently writing the scripts),

@Origame - Show wasn't great but she did have a point with this scene.

@theBlackSquare - no she didn't. Catcalling was literally the only example that women experience more than men, and you're high if you think that proves she has it worse than Bruce who was hunted by the military (not to mention the comics where he watched his father kill his mother).

@theBlackSquare - Bruce was abused by his father, had to abandon his life including the woman he loved to go on the run for years resulting in him trying to take his own life, finds a potential love interest and friends only to leave them after The Hulk chimped out again thanks to Wanda, now she's dead, along with (arguably) the closest dude he had to a friend left. But yah his cousin who has complete control of her Hulkself gets supposedly catcalled which is infinitely worse than Banner's crybaby issue's. User Comment Image

@Origame - Shes not saying she had it worse than him. Just that there's certain stuff that woman have to put up with that men don't. See your last sentence for example.

@HashTagSwagg - Yeah, missing the whole point there by a country mile but nice try I guess.

@theBlackSquare - also, no. Literally all of these men go through. And only catcalling is what women go through worse. Men are talked down to by people outside their field. Men are called difficult. And Men are even more likely to be murdered.

I never saw Cherry but I thought The Gray Man was decent…

Felt like an homage to 90’s action films with a modern touch that had Chris Evans playing a role that would have been tailor made for Nic Cage back in the day.

Anyway , looking forward to their next directorial in The Electric State…

I’m intrigued by the premise and it’s got a hell of a cast!!.

Still the best MCU film to me.

@Fogs - I have to agree although a few others come close in terms of personal satisfaction and favouritism. It’s aged well considering it’s been a decade.

Also man , imagine having a track record in a franchise that the Russo’s did in the MCU with the four films they have done (so far)…

Arguably the best in that universe!

Really wish that foursome, the two Directors and the two writers would return to helm the next two "Avengers" movies, but that really seems less likely unfortunately.

@Mugens - Didn't like endgame but them together knew when to tell the joke and when to let shit get serious when it needed to.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 4/25/2024, 6:34 AM
@Mugens - if not then then Moorhead and Benson would be my picks

They have done films but also have MCU experience with Moon Knight , Loki S2 and Born Again

Plus , having 2 directors could be good with helming blockbusters with that scale and magnitude

@TheVisionary25 - I agree. Do think Waldron needs a second writer two, because like you say two might handle it better than one.

"...with Cherry and The Gray Man drawing mixed reviews."

Almost EVERY film gets mixed reviews. This is the norm; it's NOT news worth reporting.

bkmeijer1 - 4/25/2024, 12:12 PM
@IAmAHoot - yeah, it's shooting a movie every other year with the last one being a two-parter. They probably didn't even have time for anything else. The writers even less so, considering they also worked on other MCU movies

Those 4 made the 4 of the top 5 Marvel movies and TWS is THE BEST of the bunch. MCU wouldnt be the successful train they are without them. Kevin should give those 4 ANYTHING they want to come back.

Anyway... With the 4 of them together, im sure this new movie will be fantastic, even with a crappy lead actor like MBB who was awful in those 2 Godzilla movies.

bkmeijer1 - 4/25/2024, 12:10 PM
@MotherGooseUPus - so what's the fifth? I'm kinda going back and forth between Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and Thor: Ragnarok. Both really took my by surprise
MotherGooseUPus
MotherGooseUPus - 4/25/2024, 1:11 PM
@bkmeijer1 - for me personally it's a toss-up between The Avengers and Thor: Ragnarok
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 4/25/2024, 2:29 PM
@MotherGooseUPus - oh yeah, completely forgot about The Avengers. Think I'm one of the few that might prefer Age of Ultron to it though. And I'll always give a ton of credit to Iron Man too.

Now that I think about it, my top 5 is more of a top 10 (in order of release):
1. Iron Man
2. Avengers
3. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
4. Guardians of the Galaxy (the whole trilogy)
5. Avengers: Age of Ultron (yes, I dare say it)
6. Captain America: Civil War
7. Thor: Ragnarok
8. Avengers: Infinity War
9. Avngers: Endgame
10. Shang-Chi

@bkmeijer1 - I'm one of those who actually really likes AoU and thinks its sooo underrated. I wish a few things were different but I very much enjoyed it. I like your list. I currently don't have one but I'd only disagree with GoTG vol2/3 and Shang chi.. but other than that I agree.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 4/26/2024, 1:28 AM
@MotherGooseUPus - yeah, AoU is kinda underrated. I especially like how it looked compared to Avengers. That looked like a tv special at times

This movie was a rarity in the MCU the type of movie that will never be seen again.

Captain America:Civil War is close but not as good as The Winter Soldier.

Winter Soldier and Civil War are the two greatest Marvel films to date. I give Winter Soldier the edge over Civil War only because the villains were better...but it's close.

In my opinion, the Winter soldier isn't just the best Marvel movie to date, but like the the best comic book movie ever made.

@Izaizaiza -

I go back and forth on which is best & all my reasons. Winter Soldier, Dark Knight, Infinity War.

I love them all, and while I love several more great CBMs, none are close to these 3 gems.
Izaizaiza
Izaizaiza - 4/25/2024, 10:05 AM
@DocSpock - Those really are on another level. I love winter soldier and Dark Knight because they are both kick ass (relatively) street level CBM that make social commentary without hitting you over the head with it. Infinity War is just a flawless comic book hurricane of awesome
DocSpock
DocSpock - 4/25/2024, 10:20 AM
@Izaizaiza -

I have been reading/collecting comics since the 60s & have seen every mainstream CBM in the theater.

Superman 1 & 2, Batman 1 & 2, Spider-Man 1 & 2, Watchmen, X-Men 1 & 2, then came the MCU. These movies all blew me away and were so iconic when they happened. As a kid, I never could imagine all this would happen.
Izaizaiza
Izaizaiza - 4/25/2024, 10:28 AM
@DocSpock - Dude, me too. You might be the only guy on this site older than me! I was 9 when Superman came out. I never thought we would get the comic book movie revolution that we did
DocSpock
DocSpock - 4/25/2024, 10:31 AM
@Izaizaiza -

LOL! I was 21 when it came out. Was that you making all that noise in the theater you whippersnapper?
