BLACK WIDOW Star Scarlett Johansson Reveals Sexy Costume She Refused To Wear In THE WINTER SOLDIER

We've heard a lot about how sexualised Black Widow was in Iron Man 2, and Scarlett Johansson has now revealed that she had to put her foot down in Captain America: The Winter Soldier about one sexy outfit.

Marvel Studios Executive Vice President of Production Victoria Alonso recently admitted that the sexualised portrayal of Black Widow in Iron Man 2 still bothers her. Black Widow, meanwhile, will tackle the way Natasha Romanoff has previously been portrayed head-on, poking fun at the "classic" pose that's quite obviously inspired by the male gaze. 

That's an issue Scarlett Johansson had to tackle in 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier when she was presented with having to wear a blonde wig and skimpy tennis whites. 

"In some says I look at it as a costume she was wearing — at the time, Marvel was interested in the character being a shape-shifter," she tells Fatherly. "When we were doing Captain America: The Winter Soldier — this is a really funny thing — the look is fantastic and utilitarian. She first drives up in this beautiful car and picks up Cap, and initially in the script, it was like, she arrives in her tennis whites, with a blonde wig. It was very quickly killed."

"You work with a lot of male writers," Johansson added. "Things were shifting. You have to be a part of the change. Audiences are also demanding stuff and there’s a cultural shift and it feeds everything into a more progressive direction. It’s been a process, it’s been a process."

Talking about becoming more creatively involved with how Black Widow was portrayed as time passed, Johansson did praise Natasha's Iron Man 2 costume, crediting "amazing incredible" costume designer Mary Zophres "who created an absolutely beautiful femme fatale look for the character. And it was very stunning."

It's certainly interesting to hear this insight from the actress, and it doesn't seem unfair to say that the portrayal of Black Widow on screen has definitely improved in recent years.

Black Widow saw it last night. I thought it was great. 4 1/2 Stars out of 5.

@DoubleD - I'd definitely give it a 4/5* I've watched quite a few reviews and they were really all over the place. Some liked the start and hated the end, and some said the opposite. I called the Taskmaster reveal about 2 months ago so I wasn't surprised or disappointed by that. Personally I had a great time throughout.

If anything this is regressive since it's just more restrictions on how characters can be portrayed.

@Origame - I don't know. If all the options have always been there, and things still went in certain directions for the most part, then we definitely get more variety overall by forcing things in different directions here and there.

@Kyos - not from what we've seen from this. At this point, women can't be seen as sexy, can't be shown weaker than a man, can't be shown with flaws to their character (outside of not knowing just how awesome they are), talk to other women about men, and can't die if said death is only there to further a male characters arc. These are ridiculously restricting.

@Origame - This is exactly why this is a problem. You're only seeing it from your perspective and not considering the female perspective. Women like her do not want to be objectified all the time and want to be known for other qualities. To call it regressive is entirely silly. We're literally coming FROM this time of marginalizing women (and other demographics). It's absolutely progressive. Which btw, is a good thing to all of those stuck in old ways.

This is not to say we shouldn't have any sexiness portrayed. But let it be natural and not contrived just to please the man.

I mean listen, I'm a guy with guy-hormones...you don't think I love seeing this shit? I'm just empathetic and don't want others to feel a certain way at the expense of my selfish desires.

I really struggle to understand what people base stuff like this on. I mean, okay, I will concede that maybe female characters are allowed to be "sexy" in ways that don't neccessarily adhere to certain (male?) ideas of what constitutes "sexy". That's a good thing, though, imo, so, idk, tough luck?

@Origame - I think the issue that you’re missing is that Hollywood has an over reliant tendency to go to these characteristics. The reason why these tropes are “restricted” now is to literally force writers and directors to do something more creative with female characters. It’s a shame that it had to get to that point before creatives figured out that there are other things they can do with these characters.

To you, what you’re used to is being restricted. But for many women, a small section of character traits are being restricted in order for a wider set of traits to finally be widely applied.

@SonOfOdor - the restrictions I've mentioned go beyond tropes. They're basic writing principles. The only one that isn't is having a character appear sexy but, guess what, guys are treated that way too.

@MarvelousMarty - Jesus, employees should be able to voice their discomfort. Having watched the movie, what purpose would Black Widow being in a tennis outfit have served? It would be unnecessary.

@Mugens - Mark Hamill, Clooney, Daniel Craig, Shailene Woodley and Blake Lively. All disliked something about characters they've played, all got on with the job they were hired to do. Marlon Brando hated some of his roles but got on with it (before he went mad).

@MarvelousMarty - Yep. I'm about 60, and it has been interesting to see (and read about) the changes through the years. And it has gone from doing what they were told (even if it hurt them and/or messed up their social lives) to making demands, changing dialogue, getting script approval, and now, even co-writing the scripts.

Of course, it's been gradual and, as you know, others don't fight it. And, as you know, sometimes all of this works out for everyone, other times it ruins the movie and reputations, and a lot of in-between.

But it has been interesting seeing things progress (and regress) over the decades.

Good on her. That was definitely the right move. The character has become progressively more interesting as time has gone by. Looking forward to checking out BW tonight.
