Captain America: The Winter Soldier Predictions

Captain America: The Winter Soldier Predictions

It’s time to make some predictions for Marvel Studio’s upcoming blockbuster Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Yes, there may seem to be a theme at the moment, but with the upcoming release it is difficult not to look at the trailers and wonder what is heading our way. With anticipation rising for this film, it seemed like a perfect opportunity to see what is heading our way.

CAPTAIN AMERICA
THE WINTER SOLDIER

While I do realize this is already my second article focusing on Marvel Studios, I simply cannot ignore the fact that their existence actually truly inspired me to start a blog in the first place. Furthermore, I have been observing the latest trailers for the upcoming film Captain America: The Winter Soldier and as the film will soon be released I thought I would throw in my own personal two cents. Presumably it will take over the role of Iron Man 2 in Phase 2, while not focusing too much on that exact buildup. Maybe that is attributed to S.H.I.E.L.D. being a part of the entire storyline instead of suddenly appearing out of left field. While whatever I am stating now might have no deeper meaning than being simple speculation on my part, I believe there is at least a sense of excitement seeing where you were right or wrong.

“THEY CALL HIM THE WINTER SOLDIER”
It is difficult to talk about the actual subtitle for the film, as those unaware of the character’s origin, as it might be a giant spoiler for people. So, while I could simply state who this character is in this universe, I will try to avoid blatantly spelling it out. What I do want to point out though is I am curious how the relationship between this character and Rogers will be portrayed within this film. In the trailers he is deemed as a drone, who only focuses on the task at hand and someone who had left behind his humanity a long time ago. Yet, what baffled me was this one scene where the Soldier captures Cap’s shield. A little close-up of his face shows so much agony and sadness that we come to understand that he knows exactly was happening around him. Hopefully this will be further realized in the film and we may get to see how such a thing can affect a human being.

“TO BUILD A BETTER WORLD...”
This sentence I absolutely find fascinating. Robert Redford’s character states very clearly that to make a safer world you need to tear the old one down. This alongside the scene with the Helicarriers may be a reflection on how Drone’s are used nowadays. While the world tries to become a safer place we try to regain control, but in a way that is no simple task as too much control may take away freedom. S.H.I.E.L.D. has already been questioned in the show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as even one of their veteran agents, Phil Coulson, has lost trust in something he once dedicated his entire life too. There is actually more to this sentence than simply stating how the film will slowly show a new world appearing, probably also building up towards the existence of Ultron. Why name an entire show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. if after the first season that organization will be taken down in its only future film? In just the trailer we see the fall with all the Helicarriers crashing, as it seems as if the organization was being eaten alive from the inside. This is something I am really only theorizing on, as I have no idea what exactly they are planning, but there is a short scene where Captain America and Black Widow enter an old abandoned building of the organization. Could we maybe see the reconstruction of S.H.I.E.L.D. in this show? Maybe after the season finale I can touch upon this topic once again.

“THIS ISN’T FREEDOM, THIS IS FEAR!”
While the film feels as if it is focusing more on S.H.I.E.L.D., it still is Captain America’s film. The trailers seem to use him to great effect, as he is in the middle of the entire conflict that is slowly erupting around him. He is completely at odd with what the organization is trying to accomplish. They are simply trying to preserve mankind and destroy the fabric of corruption before it occurs. Rogers is a firm believer that you shouldn’t judge a man before he committed a crime. He knows this so well, because he was no different before he became the man he is today. So, he believes that everyone, no matter how evil deserves a chance. In Avengers, he faced Loki but only attacked as a reaction to what he was doing. The fact that he is in Germany stating that only one man was the reason for its corruption speaks a lot for the character. Even if he fought against them in the 2nd World War, he never believed that all of them were truly evil. It will certainly be interesting how he will adapt to the world that is changing around him. What I find a nice touch is that we won’t be seeing the fish-out-of-water story, as we already saw that with Thor, who is more out of sync with our world than the man, who was frozen in time for around 70 years.

Yes, I could go into the fact that Redford spoiled the fact that he might be playing a villain in this film. I also am a firm believer that the actual villain of this film will indeed be HYDRA, who probably had spread out across the United States. Maybe their infiltration might even play a role in the rumored Agent Carter series. What I find the most interesting is simply how we might get a better into our world when superheroes not only live in it, but an entire organization is trying to keep from any others appearing to wreak havoc across the nation. While people do complain Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been too light in the beginning, it probably was meant as a contrast to the much darker themes that we would be seeing in this film. I am rather curious how these two very distinctive media will affect each other as a tie-in has been confirmed. This is a just a little side note of mine, but I really am looking to this film. I think this might be a turning point either for the entire company or just the second phase. With Guardians of the Galaxy coming next we won’t have much of our classic heroes until next year in May, which is very evident with the early release of this year. Only a little more than a month to go and anticipation keeps on rising. All we can do now is speculate and predict.

Interesting ideas. This film should be great. I believe that Redford's character may be more connected with AIM. What do you think, like HYDRA 2.0?

Nice point. AOS does have a role in this film. Seeding the distrust between the agents/Capt. America and Shield. Like they touched on a bit in the Avengers. I even think the Deathlok leg and Eye tech kinda allude to the winter Soldier. Big Brother scares us all, this movie is gonna tap into that.

SHEILD has something to do with the creation of Winter Solider. At the beginning of the second trailer, the guy closing the door has a shield symbol on his coat on the arm. Also, when you see Black Widow and Captain america walking in that old beat-up room with the old sheild symbol, that looks awfully like the one Winter Soldier was being worked in.

@BoneSawIsReady: I do hope that A.I.M. does return as well, but I believe that it might be a part of HYDRA at this point. I am sure it will be pointing out why Baron von Strucker has a part in Avengers 2.

@TheGreenNinja: I think they are trying to make a connection between the show and this film, Deathlok's transformation might be alluding to how the Winter Soldier evolved.

@MrCBM56: I didn't notice that, nice find!

It's going to be 1984 with technological advancement.

It seems to me that the message of this film is that power corrupts and knowledge is power. S.H.I.E.L.D. know damned near everything about the world, yet they're still trying to go one better than that and eliminate any and all threats before they occur. Like you said, Cap's a guy who believes in punishment for a crime not for preventing the crime from being committed. To prevent crime, means taking away someone's free will. If we had a force that could simply pick out any and everyone who was conspiring to commit a crime and that force apprehended those people, hooray, the streets are safe.

But what happens when all the bad guys are off the streets and there's nobody left to watch? They start keeping tabs on the normal folk. Laws become stricter, fascism takes prevalence and free will becomes a thing of the past. They summarised this quite well in Red Dwarf, british sci fi show. The cast enter an abandoned prison where their minds are probed to see if they have committed crimes. The probe only responded to the person's own sense of guilt, so only Rimmer, who failed to fix a drive plate which led to an atomic explosion which wiped out the crew of the entire ship, ended up jailed. Inside the prison, there was a justice field. If you tried to commit a crime, the consequences happened to you.

Upon escape, Lister has a bit of a rant where he says something along the lines of, "If you try to create an environment of justice, you take away people's god given free will! Life by its very nature is supposed to be cruel unkind and unfair!" That's a pretty interesting philosophy as it's actually true. If laws constrict us to a set parameter of living we lose our free will, but if we just live our lives, though it may be a bad ride for a while, it'll always balance out.

It's just sad that we're headed towards the society that George Orwell presented in 1984. People are under constant surveillance and yet they feel safe? Because there's an excuse. There was a threat once and despite it being a thing of the past, people have forgotten just how much they're being watched. Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, the internet, CCTV and even your phone are constantly under surveillance. There's a group of university students in America who have set up a scheme whereby, they track you via your mobile phone and judging by the restaurants you eat at, the neighbourhood you live in and the bars you drink at, they are going to predict how long you'll live. How sadistic is that? How scary is it that you can tell someone's health just by tracking a phone signal?

People need to wake up and realise what kind of a messed up society we're living in, where it's bad to give a small amount of money to a homeless person because he'll just buy booze/drugs but right to give to a charity, who then give the money to a corrupt government and you don't even know where your money'll end up. Give your money to a homeless guy and you know where your money's going.

Anyway, AoS hints at surveillance too, I mean people with eyes that are always recording? Who's to say that's not already a thing?

I'm done, I think I've said enough.

@The Archivist, great aritcle, and i'm gonna agree with you 'bout Hydra, if you notice in The Avengers they kept referencing "Phase 2", which after Cap broke into the storage area found out that it was weapons based offa Hydra technology. And Stark found blueprints for the missles that were bein' designed usin' that technology. DCMF had a article on here Feb 2nd that showed pics and two of those showed Cap takin' out soldiers, notice the containers in both pics and I'd guess those contain the missles mentioned for "Phase 2".

I have no doubts this movie will be great. I don't think I was confident with any other marvel cbm like I am for this in a long time. Everything from the trailers and everything seems balanced.

Comparing to Marvels last 2 movies from phase 2 I thought Iron Man 3 had lot of potential but I started to lose confidence and interest after I saw all those robots from the final battle(second trailr I think) and after I found out about other spoilers from the movie I was let down. And Thor 2 never looked appealing to me and I was kinda right. Yes the movie had some improvments over the first but they were small technical advances in the fx but not a big update. Storywise I preferred the first movie.

Back on Captain America 2, I hope this movie bring back my confidence in this universe that I have in phase 1 up to Avengers which was spectacular.

If X-Men Days of Future Past next trailer doesn't offer anything less than epic I expect Cpatain America will maintain as my most anticipated movie of 2014.
