EDITORIAL: Why The Winter Soldier WON'T Become Captain America In The MCU

With the news of Sebastian Stan's nine picture deal with Marvel and Chris Evans' announcement that he will retire from acting after his Marvel contract expires, people have assumed Bucky will become Captain America. But, isn't that TOO obvious?

It's obvious! Stan has a nine picture deal AND Chris Evans is "retiring" after his contract expires! That means Sebastian Stan's Winter Soldier A.K.A Bucky Barnes will take the mantle of Captain America, right? One thing Marvel Studios is GREAT at doing is making us, the fans, think we have it all figured out. We thought we figured out that Thanos HAD to be the villain in Avengers 2. We thought we figured out that Iron Man was gonna fly into space to meet the Guardians of the Galaxy at the end of Iron Man 3. We also thought we KNEW that Doctor Strange was gonna go up against Batman and Superman on May 6th, 2016 but it seems that is incorrect as well. My point is, is it really THAT obvious? Thanos in Avengers 2 was right? Here are some specific reasons why I think Bucky will NOT become Captain America in the MCU.

1) THIS ISN'T THE COMICS

If Iron Man 3 is an example of anything, Marvel Studios isn't directly pulling stories from the comics and putting them on the big screen. Yes, they are the characters in the comics and there are easter eggs thrown in for fans, but not everything in the comics translates well in movies. Watchmen, for example, did a great job making a near shot by shot movie based off the beloved graphic novel and for the most part, fans loved it. However, this didn't appeal to the modern moviegoer as much as it did the fans. Marvel has done an excellent job at making their characters more mainstream. I understand that this is a fantasy world, hell, I can accept Coulson coming back to life on TV with some crazy robot, alien thing or however he came back, but Coulson's resurrection wasn't a movie worthy story. Marvel could easily make Bucky into Cap, but how would the everyday moviegoer react to this? They would be confused because Marvel made Steve Rogers mainstream. Im not saying Rogers won't die in future movies, but people who aren't comic fans, who just watch the movies, KNOW that Steve Rogers is Captain America, just like they KNOW that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. There have been other alter-egos to these characters but the movie fans won't know that. Bucky becoming Captain America was a great story in the comics but I don't think it will translate well to the modern movie viewing audience.

2) STAN'S CONTRACT MEANS NOTHING

Again, people think they have it all figured out. Sebastian Stan has a 9 picture contract, that means he HAS to be in 9 movies, right? It really isn't that simple people. Stan's contract just means that IF Marvel wants his character back in future films, he is obligated by his contract to do those future films. But, by no standard does that mean that Sebastian Stan is DEFINITELY coming back as Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes. He could, but he might not. Every actor that signs with Marvel Studios signs a contract like this because Robert Downey Jr.'s contract ran out and he had so much leverage on Marvel to get so much money because he IS Iron Man. Marvel won't make that mistake again. Hell, freaking Ty Simpkins, who played Harley in Iron Man 3, signed a 3 picture deal with Marvel. Will he come back? Maybe. If Marvel wants him to come back, he has to, but he isn't DEFINITELY coming back just because he has 2 more pictures on his deal. Basically, Sebastian Stan CAN return as Bucky but only if Marvel wants him to. NOTHING IS DEFINITE.

3) ONE SMALL QUOTE

If you don't think Marvel Studios knows what they are doing, then you are an idiot. One reason people are hating on The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is because they feel like they know TOO much about it, with all these clips and trailers. The only fact we have in believing that Bucky could become Captain America is Sebastian Stan saying, "Yes[...] I think I actually have nine." referring to his picture contract. Marvel knows what they are doing and we don't. We the fans, are great at speculating and deciphering every little bit of information that we see. Bucky COULD become Captain America but until we get some real information to support this claim, then I will believe it. One small quote makes us think we are so smart but the real smart people are the people at Marvel Studios.

Just remember people, don't get too hasty. Cap 2 hasn't even come out yet and we are already speculating Cap 3 and beyond. We all just have to wait and see. Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves.

Great article! Thumbs up from me.

Your first two points in particular are brilliant. You'd think people would know by now: just because something happened in the comics, doesn't even come close to guaranteeing that that's how it'll turn out in the movies. This can't be emphasized enough.

And I absolutely agree with your 2nd point. The only reason Stan got a longer contract than Evans is because Evans has MUCH more leverage over Marvel. He's a much more established actor with more powerful agents, and so Marvel was forced to strike a deal that was fair to both sides. Stan, on the other hand, doesn't even come close to having the same level of influence that Evans has. Thus, Marvel roped him in to signing on for 9 POTENTIAL films, just in case they need him. It's business. Business decision, plain and simple.

Of course, Bucky COULD eventually replace Rogers. Who knows. But it doesn't exactly seem likely. Whereas in the comics there was decades of history between Bucky and Steve...there's not nearly the same in the MCU. It'd be really off-putting if they kill of Steve and have Bucky replace him. It just wouldn't have the same impact, and it really wouldn't make as much sense. Just my two cents. Good stuff!

Hey it would be cool to see Bucky again but as Cap? I just don't think so

Interesting points, but Marvel has three choices when Evans' contract ends. They offer him a huge amount of money to sign another deal, they recast as they did with Bruce Banner (which wouldn't be quite so easy after Evans starred in three solo movies and three Avengers ones) or they kill him off in an incredibly memorable and amazing way at the hands of Thanos and then give Stan a chance to play the character. If it works, they have another trilogy on their hands. If not, Cap can be put on the shelf for a while - similar to how Hulk hasn't had any solo movies - or they can bring Steve back with another actor. Personally, I definitely want to see BuckyCap, and there's no way Marvel won't be keeping an eye on the reaction Stan gets in this movie to see if it's feasible...

Stan is their fall back plan. 9 because why not? If people start to really like him then they will keep him. 9 is so they don't risk another RDJ incident

@JoshWilding Thanks for the read and thoughts. Its not that i don't want Bucky as Cap. I just don't think Marvel will do it. But if Winter Soldier is HUGE and people really like him, then maybe they will but nobody should say, "YES BUCKY IS CAP NOW" because nothing is confirmed. We gotta wait and see

@SotoJuiceMan It's a GREAT story but it might not work in Marvel's Avengers centered universe, ya know?

@MrSidTheSexyPervertedHeroSloth

They will just have another actor be Steve Rogers/Captain America. This isn't a role that only 1 person can play. It's just like James Bond. When one actor stops playing that role they get another one.

@soforizo haha, you never know

@BrockSamson33 But do all the 23 James Bond movies take place in the same universe?

@soforizo people really hate it because its Sony not Marvel and they think it will magically be different with Marvel but it won't

@soforizo I agree

Maybe it's just me, but I MUCH prefer Bucky as Captain America (in the comics at least...Evans has been great from day one, but based on what we're hearing about Stan in this movie, he could be just as good).

i think it would be pretty f*ckin cool seeing bucky becoming cap,especially if it was handled the same way as brubaker did it in the comics.

but saying that who would they cast as the new captain america? why not do winter soldier trilogy?
TheDuck
TheDuck - 3/16/2014, 9:31 AM
@JoshWilding yea i like Bucky in the comics as Cap but will they do that in the movie after everybody has gotten to know Steve Rogers waaay more than Bucky? Maybe later down the road
TheDuck
TheDuck - 3/16/2014, 9:33 AM
@AlexanderLykins Yea but the MCU hasn't been around as long as "James Boned"
TheDuck
TheDuck - 3/16/2014, 9:33 AM
@marvel72 it would be cool but pretty hard to do because we haven't gotten a lot of development with bucky yet but that could change in Cap 2
TheDuck
TheDuck - 3/16/2014, 9:35 AM
@soforizo I agree i really like Evans but if he doesn't want to return he doesn't have to because his contract is gonna run out
TheDuck
TheDuck - 3/16/2014, 9:39 AM
@AlexanderLykins They won't recast because its not like Norton who was in one movie then got recast
Evans has been around and been in the movie of all movies so they can kill him or have bucky come in but recast isn't an option
