On February 11, 2013 Unleash the Fanboy revealed that there was a possibility that Robert Redford's Alexander Pierce "is actually a Red Skull possessed Aleksander Lukin." This has got me to thinking about the story for the sequel of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. As Captain America fans may recall there was a direct sequel to the Captain America: Winter Soldier comic book called Captain America: Red Menace.

In the comic Captain America is primarily trying to take down the Red Skull possessed Aleksander Lukin for what he did to his partner Bucky. While tackling this new enemy Cap is also trying to find the recently restored Bucky, after he had escaped from him in Captain America: Winter Soldier. All of this leads to Cap and Bucky teaming up for the first time in decades to take on a Sleeper unleashed by Lukin on the streets of London. Meanwhile, the Red Skull's daughter, Sin, becomes a threat again due to the efforts of Crossbones.

I think this is possibly the story that will be adapted in Captain America 3. This is because almost all the characters from the story are in place including Cap, Winter Soldier, Aleksander Lukin, and Crossbones. Even the Sleeper has been introduced in this universe through the video game Captain America: Super Soldier.

The only thing that is really missing is Sin. However, it is not out of the realm of possibility that she could be introduced, and it would make for some good flashback moments for the Red Skull. Or, Crossbones could train someone else instead of her. For example, he could possibly train Baron Helmut Zemo, and it be revealed through a flashback that Cap had fought Baron Heinrich Zemo in the war.

If I am right then what could this possibly mean for the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Well Captain America: Red Menace was the last Cap story before Steve died at the end of Civil War. While the Civil War is not happening in the movies, this could mean that Steve is destined to die at the hands of Thanos in Avengers 3. If the MCU is to continue after Avengers 3, then this could lead to Bucky getting his own series as a replacement Captain America.

Well that's all I've got for now. If you agree with me, or think I've gone batty feel free to tell me so in the usual place.

@Interestein: Why that title if Cap doesn't die in that movie?

I loved Super Soldier. Probably one of the best movie tie-in games I ever played.

Where do those animated Cap, Zemo, and Crossbones come from?

I actually don't expect a Cap 3 at all. If nothing else, Avengers 3 will fulfill Evans' contract.

but yeah, I've said before that it'll be a hard pill to swallow for the general audience to go to a Captain America movie with someone else wielding the shield. When you have decades of plot to fill, yeah, you kill people off, and bring them back, over and over. When you have only a few hours of film, the plot is FAR more precious.

@dethpillow: I think if Cap dies it will have a tremendous impact on the characters in the movies. For America he's a symbol and a legend, and for the Avengers he's partially why Nick Fury was inspired to form them in the first place.

Sin is easy, for all we know that could very well be Van Camp's real character. She did say her character takes an interesting turn so that could very well fit if it goes that way. Her being Sin was speculated early on as well. That would be awesome if she does become Sin.

I wished just wished that at Comic-Con Marvel studios, Sony, and Fox came together and announced Civil war films.

Evans will do Cap 3, 4 and 5. I have no doubt about that. Also, one of the main things that Agents of Shield brings to the MCU is minor powered characters. I think because of that there is a definite possibility of a Civil War movie down the line. Marvel is planning their stories long term and Civil war requires years to build up. If for NO other reason then to populate the MCU with enough characters that they can have a registration type situation. AoS is the perfect vehicle for that type of story ground work in season 3,4 or even 5. I think we are really underestimating just how important marvels tv properties will be to the larger MCU and how they intend to incorporate everything. I mean we have Scorch, Freeze guy, Gravitron and Deathlock in the 1st 10 episodes. The pace of the show, of the story telling, has picked up and I expect for the introduction of other chaeacters to coincide with that pace. Even if AoS introduces 5 powered characters a season for 3 seasons, thats 15. Plus the ones that are introduced in the MCU and the ones introduced on the netflix shows. That means between the 2 movies a year say we get 2 powered (or even Hawkeye/Bullseye/Black Widow type bad asses) and 2 for each of the net flix shows thats 29 not counting the actual heros like Daredevil plus ones that have already been introduced. In 5 years there can easily be 50 active MCU characters. Thats plenty for Civil War. Ide rather see World War Hulk though. (Dont do the math, I just wanted to make a point).

"Evans will do Cap 3, 4 and 5. I have no doubt about that."

I have doubt about it, given his comments about big budget films. He's clearly someone who enjoys making movies, but isn't quite sure he wants to be a big name star-type.

Either way, Cap 2 is his fourth film with Marvel. The two Avengers sequels will fulfill his 6 picture deal. Guess we'll see what he does after that, like with Downey.

Cap 2 is his third movie with Marvel, unless they actually count that 30 seconds in TDW. And while I generally discount rumors, there have been a lot of them about a third Capt. America film, and I think that unless TWS underperforms, that we will get it.

As for a potential story for another Cap movie, I would much rather see them come up with something original than adapt a comic storyline. That's one of the things that I have liked about most of the MCU films, that while they may have included a few things from comic storylines (mainly in the origin movies), they have had a lot of originality too. And while TWS is obviously taken from a comic storyline, I think there will be enough changes to keep it interesting. However, I think they would be better off with a more original story for the next one.

Since Cap 3 is going to be released during Phase 3 i think it'll showcase or highlight a main villain in which the villain operates behind the scenes. I'm guessing that Zemo could be used for the third film. I'm fine if the Captain America films adapt storylines from the comics to use in the film as long as they make small changes to each film so that the film itself wont be so predictable.

@mightyzeus I agree. I don't mind sticking to comics either, but throwing in some mix ups is fun. On that note, I don't see them straying from the comics on Cap 3 either b/c most of all the characters in Cap 2 will be back so that easily set up Cap 3 along with the same directors. Cap 3 will definitely be based heavily on Comics with the proverbial cinematic twists, which is fine by me.

I'd like to see 'em do a story that Roger Stern wrote back in the early '80's, issues 253, and 254, when he gets a message that he's needed in London, and travels there to help take down Baron Blood. I know it would be a hard movie to fit into the MCU, but vampires are popular now. Cap:TWS is a completely different tone then Cap: TFA, this would make it a completely different tone for the 3rd installment.

I'd totally count that appearance. He still had to show up on set, get in costume, etc. Length doesn't matter, unless he agreed to do it as a favor (like RDJ with Incredible Hulk).

Some of Samuel Jackson's appearances have been close to that length, and still count towards his contracted appearances.
