BLADE Undergoing Changes After Vampire Hunter Was Relegated To "Fourth Lead"; New Details On THE MARVELS' Woes

New details have emerged about the many issues Marvel Studios has faced with its planned Blade reboot, while we also have news on some of the chaos surrounding The Marvels' $250 million production...

At the San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, Marvel Studios announced that Mahershala Ali would take on the title role in a new Blade movie. No one could have anticipated a global pandemic being on the horizon, but more than four years later, there's still no sign of the Daywalker.

According to Variety, Kevin Feige is well aware that the MCU isn't firing on all cylinders right now and is pulling the plug on scripts and projects that aren't working.

In the case of Blade, after going through at least five writers, two directors, and a shutdown just six weeks before production, Oscar-nominated Logan writer Michael Green has been tapped to start over. This comes after Ali was gearing up to leave the project.

The plan now is to make Blade for less than $100 million and whatever comes next sounds better than what was previously in the works. One of the scripts scrapped by Feige "morphed into a narrative led by women and filled with life lessons. Blade was relegated to the fourth lead, a bizarre idea considering that the studio had two-time Oscar winner Ali on board."

The report also details why Marvel Studios has faced issues with VFX and how that impacted Disney+ She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. When it comes to the theatrical titles, The Marvels has faced its fair share of struggles, and while it's tracking for a $75 million - $80 million opening, the budget is said to have ballooned to $250 million.

Four weeks of reshoots were required to "bring coherence to a tangled storyline," with director Nia DaCosta said to have raised eyebrows for working on another movie, Hedda, while The Marvels was still in post-production.

A public test screening was held in Texas this past June, only for the Captain Marvel sequel to receive "middling reviews." If recent rumours about a surprise Multiversal cameo are correct, then we're guessing that was followed by the aforementioned reshoots.

"If you’re directing a $250 million movie, it’s kind of weird for the director to leave with a few months to go," one source says. "Kevin’s real superpower, his genius, has always been in postproduction and getting his hands on movies and making sure that they finished strongly. These days, he’s spread thin."

There's work to be done and if The Marvels does underperform, then it will be a rough end to the year after Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania disappointed. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was a high point, but filmmaker James Gunn has since made the leap to DC Studios to take charge of the DCU.

Here's some more upcoming articles lol
"A studio source notes that regardless of Jonathan Majors’s legal issues, Marvel already had considered moving away from a Majors-led phase because of the box office performance of “Quantumania,” which will struggle to make a profit.""

"Marvel, which traditionally only solicits feedback from Disney employees and their friends and families, took the uncharacteristic step of holding a public test screening for “The Marvels” in Texas. The audience gave the film middling reviews"

This should be pinned to every article from now on.

@bobevanz - Absolutely right.

Indiana Jones is the perfect example of Disney having their pre-screening process in a bubble. People behind the scenes were shocked that it failed but don’t realize that the people who are screening this stuff for validity aren’t going to tell them when it’s bad. The current MCU stuff is making this glaringly obvious with word that they were also shocked that Quantumania wasn’t a hit. They need to just get out of their own way at this point.

Victor might be a significantly deeper and more complex vilain than any version of Kang, but he needs the screentime to establish himself as a multifaceted threat and not just another OP longterm bad guy.

Bringing him as a replacement at the last second just wouldn't work.

@DrReedRichards - the point is Doom should have been the focus since day one if they're going to aim for Secret Wars. Buy like typical Feige, he wrote down an idea 7 years ago and thinks it'll still work. But of course they have all these different cogs in the machine turning, so introducing Doom wasn't possible. Now look where we are. I'm saying if dumbass knew about Secret Wars years ago, why tf didn't they bother to introduce Doom. After Age of Ultron would have been a perfect time for an Easter egg, Latveria getting fallout from the floating city. Maybe they didn't have the rights back then, but I guarantee he had Secret Wars written down somewhere.

Ok, you're really undermining how bad the blade script misused blade.

So the story was focused on blades daughter, who didn't have vampire powers like her father and served as his oracle. Eventually she gets bit by a werewolf and becomes one herself. This leads to a fight between her and her father. He then bites her, and the resulting mix of genes turns her into what's described as a vampire god.

@Origame - This is exactly what I came to say. You've for a fan favorite character like Blade. Someone EVERYONE loves. A character who is single handedly responsible for the rise of the comic book film genre. And your way of handling him in the MCU is to have him play second fiddle to his daughter, who he passes the torch to in his first movie?

If I were Ali, and I accepted this role and that's the script they gave me, I would have been ready to walk from the project too!

And people honestly don't see the problem with the MCU right now lol. They still defend what they are doing by making the entire MCU about all the women while making the men look like second stringers.

Let me write Blade. I bet you I can make a blade script better than these hacks. Make him bad ass, kill plenty of vampires, tease supernatural side of Marvel. It’s simple. No reason why it should be taking this long.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 11/1/2023, 12:10 PM
@Order66 - Yea like it should not be that complicated at all. What makes Blade work is easy to understand.

RedFury

@Order66 - especially when you have an excellent movie like Blade already in existence. It's a perfect example of what works. Obviously don't do a remake of it, but it's great a reference for the MCU's take.
Order66
Order66 - 11/1/2023, 12:26 PM
@RedFury - literally combine the best parts of blade 1 and blade 2 and make a reboot. Fans would love it and you sprinkle in MCU Easter eggs and references.

@Order66 - Me too. Lilith goes after the Bloodstone only to have Blade try and stop her. Elsa discovers her father Ulysses fought Blade in the 1920’s after Blade tried to get the bloodstone to cure his vampirism. Lilith wants the bloodstone to awaken Dracula. They stop Lilith, but she’s successful and Dracula is set to return. Elsa suggests to Blade he needs to find other monsters like him to stop Dracula.

@Order66 - Probably you could, but, like Bill says, it's less about talent or necessity and all about permits.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 11/1/2023, 3:50 PM
@Order66 - Exactly! It's like Punisher. How have we still not gotten the perfect Punisher movie? It's not that deep lol. It's not a difficult premise.

Even the Netflix series, as good as it was, focused way too much of his war on the government's military. In fact, he didn't really seem to care much about your average street criminals once his own series started. They built it well in Daredevil season 2. But then left it behind to focus on the military.

This is no different than Blade. Except we've actually gotten great Blade movies already. But like you said, Blade should be just as easy.

But they had other plans. The MCU doesn't care about doing their characters justice anymore. The original script had Blade passing the torch to his daughter, and the movie was going to be more about her than him. Does anyone still deny the pattern here with the MCU?
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 11/1/2023, 3:53 PM
@newhire13 - The funny thing is I've actually looked into that to pitch an X-Men idea for the MCU.

But, unsurprisingly, Disney doesn't take pitches from people that aren't employed by Disney. They have their own team of writers they employ and they don't even bother looking at anyone else's ideas.

It's the definition of an echo chamber and the reason why we keep seeing all the same crap in the MCU since Phase 4 began.

@GhostDog - Aside from him being the 4th lead, surprise surprise, the actual lead was going to be his daughter, who he passes the torch to I'm his first MCU appearance.

Are there still people denying what the MCU is doing here? It's become predictable to the point that it's laughable.

Blade vs Lilith. That should be the main villain. Tease dracula at the end to set up Midnight Suns movie. SIMPLE.

@Order66 - i dig it
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 11/1/2023, 4:01 PM
@Order66 - This is it exactly. Werewolf by Night set up the monster side of things perfectly.

Blade should have picked that up and ran with it. Like you said, Blade vs Lilith. Or....even Blade vs Deacon Frost first, since Lilith was pretty much the Midnight Suns' big bad in the comics.

But either way works. Blade takes out the bad guy, he realizes there's a larger plot at hand, and it ends with him realizing he's going to need some help.

This teases Midnight Suns and sets up some more solo projects like Ghost Rider, Moon Knight and whoever else they want to pull in. Then an after credit scene teasing Dracula.

It's seriously that simple.
