The Marvels just can't catch a break.

Marvel Studios' 33rd movie is now in theaters, and despite mixed reviews (though it has since climbed to "fresh" status), its 85% audience score indicated that movie-goers were at least somewhat more receptive to the Captain Marvel sequel than critics.

However, the film's CinemaScore tells a different story.

After receiving a "B" from polled audience members, The Marvels ties with Eternals and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania as the lowest in MCU history.

CinemaScores don't automatically sound the death knells for a movie, of course, but this does support the argument that general audiences are simply losing interest in this franchise. The latest box office projections also indicate that The Marvels could end up with one of the lowest opening weekends in the history of the MCU.

"In Marvel Studios’ The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as The Marvels.”

The film also stars Zawe Ashton and Park Seo-joon. Nia DaCosta directs, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Mary Livanos and Matthew Jenkins serve as executive producers. The screenplay is by Megan McDonnell, Nia DaCosta, Elissa Karasik and Zeb Wells.

The Marvels will begin its international rollout on November 8, and was recently granted a China release on November 10, day-and-date with North America.

Do scores like these matter? I don't know, but what I do know is that I can't wait for the inevitable article ranking the MCU movies by rotten tomatoes scores.

Cinemascore is a good indicator for legs and reception. If you’re opening night audiences are giving your movie a B you’re not gonna have good legs.

That said, I think it's a simple one. It indicates how well (or not) it is liked, and especially if there is a disagreement between critics and audiences.

@bkmeijer1 - RT is more for nerds and nerds dont make movies big hits, its the average moviegoer. CinemaScore tracks anyone. You, your grandma, your pervert neighbor, your little brother, anyone who was in that screening. Which paints a more accurate picture.

Cinemascore would be a better indicator than RT audience score imo. These people go to the movie opening night, are excited for the movie, and are surveyed after they see the movie.

A B cinemascore is going to say more than an 80+% audience score on RT. Audience scores are generally unreliable to begin with (be it RT, IMDB, MetaCritic, etc.).

But yeah, it probably does paint a good picture. A concrete score does give a good picture of what a movie is like, whereas RT's percentage only shows how many liked it.

Think it depends on what angle you're looking from. Be it legs, reception, or word of mouth like @Ryguy88 says.

@MarkCassidy - CinemaScore is not useful as a metric that gets people out to the theaters. It is useful as a gauge to see what the general audience word of mouth will be on the movie and predict legs at the box office.

Yes generally these audiences are excited enough for a movie to go opening night which is why A-range scores are generally indicative of good word of mouth. Look at the cinemascores of the CBM genre that got a B and then look at the WOM/box office of those movies.

@bkmeijer1 - I don’t think a whole lot of people decide whether or not to see a movie based on CinemaScore, but I’ve always found it to be a more accurate indicator of how much the GA likes something than Audience Scores, which can be weighed up or down by people who haven’t even seen the movie.

@mountainman - true. And like I said above, CS (and other metrics with concrete scores) shows how much it is liked, whereas RT shows by how many it is liked.

@bkmeijer1 - The problem with RT and IMDB is that there is no way to verify if the person saw the movie. That means they are more subject to review inflating or review bombing. CS only counts those who have verified seen the movie.

@bkmeijer1 - That’s a good idea. Any external metric, whether it be critic reviews, audience feedback (from any source), or box office has no bearing on your individual enjoyment of a movie. They are all data, but movie enjoyment is subjective and may not line up with any of that data.

We all like to throw these metrics around to boost or tear down movies we like or dislike. But in reality, it’s all down to individual enjoyment, which varies from person to person.

I think it was @DrReedRichards that shared the feedback from the group he saw it with and it was completely across the board, not aligned to level of MCU fan or gender.

Yeah, it was defintely not unanimous, I can tell you this much. What I'll also add, though, is that my brother just called me after he and his girlfriend watched the finale of Loki, and they both loved it infinitely more.

As MCU fans, I cannot describe what a weird week this has been.

@DrReedRichards - Loki S2 is the first MCU project that I’m excited to watch in a while. Liked the first season and the stuff I hear about S2 is good.

We will be deactivating Disney plus soon so we can watch some nostalgic stuff with our daughter and my wife wants to watch Percy Jackson. I’ll give it a watch then.

I will still see this at home unless my father decide drag me see this in theater

Amd my dad also wanted to drag me to the theater for this. Instead, I told him to watch Captain Marvel first.

Ok. So i watched it the 2nd time.

After the first switcheroo battle, there is a scene where Kamala was sweeping the floor, dressed in her costume.

She switched with Carol and returned in the air in civies.

What gives, Disney? 🤣

@vectorsigma - Isn’t there also an inconsistency of then they swap based on powers used? This type of story element is complex (much like the time travel in Endgame) and it would benefit the writers and editors to try to ensure there is consistency.

All of you giving sh1t to DC when ur Marvel company started strong but has sucked for about 2 to 3 years now.

At least DC has a hopeful future now. Marvel is trailing out with superhero fatigue of their franchise.

I believe Deadpool 3 will help them a lot and I truly hope so.

I'm a DC guys but ANY superhero movie's success is a great thing to help the genre.

@lazlodaytona - I don't think it's superhero fatigue, but moreso mediocrity fatigue. Like you say, it sucks. And that is what we're tired of.

Still, I enjoyed both what Marvel and DC have put out in recent years. Enough for me to look forward to all (and yes, that even includes Sony).
