The Marvels arrives in theaters this weekend, and just in case the reviews didn't make it clear, the Captain Marvel sequel is shaping up to be a pretty divisive entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

However, the movie features one scene, in particular, that may be destined to go down as one of the most polarizing in the history of the franchise.

Mild spoilers ahead.

You may have already guessed what the sequence involves based on previous rumors and some shots from the most recent trailers, but at one point in the third act of the movie, the three heroes pay a visit to a planet called Aladna, where everyone communicates via song.

Carol Danvers reveals that she agreed to wed Park Seo-Joon's Prince Yan (a marriage of convenience), and the pair engage in a song and dance routine while Kamala, Monica and everyone else join in.

It may sound seriously cringe (and for some, it surely will be), but the scene is completely played for absurd laughs, and others may end up hailing as one of the most entertaining aspects of the movie.

There is actually another sequence involving a bunch of Flerkens and the song "Memory" from Cats which has been flagged as potentially divisive in some reviews, but, honesty, we can't imagine anyone not having fun with that one!

"The Marvels is far from the best Marvel Studios has to offer, but it's difficult not to get swept up in its infectious energy... to a point," we said in our review. "A disjointed third act lets it down, but a game cast and plenty of fun/funny moments elevate it above more lacklustre MCU fare (we're looking at you, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumnia)."

"In Marvel Studios’ The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as The Marvels.”

The film also stars Zawe Ashton and Park Seo-joon. Nia DaCosta directs, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Mary Livanos and Matthew Jenkins serve as executive producers. The screenplay is by Megan McDonnell, Nia DaCosta, Elissa Karasik and Zeb Wells.

The Marvels will begin its international rollout on November 8, and was recently granted a China release on November 10, day-and-date with North America.

I love that someone thought Captain Marvel, of all characters and movies, required a goofy-ass Bollywood-inspired dance/song number. But then someone like Thor can't have a badass Viking Ritual performance where he and his fellow warriors sing some Heilung song to prepare for battle, which would logistically and artistically make more sense.

But, you know, MCU gonna be MCU.

@URCOMMENTSUCKS - those singing planet scenes were so cringe.

And in my place, people are watching it because of that korean guy

@vectorsigma - A dance/song number can work if you give it a good reason to be included. An obvious example is Marty in BTTF playing and singing Johnny Be Good. But making such a contrived reason to have a musical number in your superhero movie ain't it. An entire planet where people communicate through singing Disney music? Is that in the comics or is that just a brilliant original idea from the MCU themselves? I don't know, and I don't care.

@URCOMMENTSUCKS - i really cant imagine Feige signing off on this. This is not geek territory 😅

@URCOMMENTSUCKS - Well you know, fanboys think Marvel's wooden, kinda like..the comics, but also cuz of Brie perceptions in real life so I guess they thought sure...Bollywood fixes a lot.

Peacemaker opening as an example

@vectorsigma - it was executed fine in The Marvels. Inventive, different but they stop short of it being overkill. They also smartly had the trio acknowledge its absurdity rather than trying to play the scene serious.

Yeah, that divisive scene was when Muneeba shielded her husband (forgot name) from falling debris.

As someone who grew up on Bollywood films , people breaking into song & dance doesn’t bother me so bring it lol!!.

Say what you want about the post-Infinity Saga projects but I appreciate Marvel not being afraid to get weird and experiment as they have with certain projects in Phase 4 & 5 so far even if they may not work for everyone.

@TheVisionary25 - For sure, big Bollywood vibes. My only complaint is that they didn't go all in, "Naatu Naatu" style.

I don't think a lame dance number will be the main reason people will dislike the film.

These two scenes specially, which I’ve heard called out in other reviews, are specially why the tone of this movie seems to be quite the opposite of what many of us fans are looking for in our MCU movies.

If you watch it and enjoy it, good for you.

But don’t call us haters or say we only are disinterested because of female or minority leads.

It’s the writing decisions like this. It’s the goofy nature of this stuff.

The “I’m just a girl” scene from the first movie was one of the most cringe inducing scenes in the entire MCU, and it sounds like they might have actually topped it with pulling a song from one of the worst musical ever “Cats” and played it over a flerkin scene.

Once again, if you like it, I’m not faulting you for that. But please understand this stuff is turning off a large portion of the potential audience.

@mountainman - a film with no stakes and then they add this.

i feel like this was made for little girls if it wasnt obvious enough. Like watching sofia the first

What was Feige thinking signing off that scene?

OleBobbyTiger - 11/9/2023, 11:52 AM
@mountainman - Have you seen it yet?
mountainman
mountainman - 11/9/2023, 12:03 PM
@RoberTiger - Nope. But having those two scenes described to me in multiple reviews, there is a zero percent chance I would enjoy them. Not a fan of musicals and no matter how they are executed, it’s not to my taste.

Why can’t folks like you understand that? Many of us don’t want musical elements, goofy humor or twerking in our comic book properties.
OleBobbyTiger
OleBobbyTiger - 11/9/2023, 12:25 PM
@mountainman - So you hate something you haven't even seen and you want people to stop calling you a hater for that?
mountainman
mountainman - 11/9/2023, 12:31 PM
@RoberTiger - Have you watched every movie that has ever been released? If not, then are there factors that help you decide which to not see? Can I call you a hater for not liking certain genres or elements in your movies?
OleBobbyTiger
OleBobbyTiger - 11/9/2023, 12:32 PM
@mountainman - If I'm going around to every online article proclaiming my hatred for a movie I haven't seen then yes, I would expect you to call me a hater. Am I doing that? No.

Are you?
MarvelZombie616
MarvelZombie616 - 11/9/2023, 12:40 PM

Me however, i hated it.

@RoberTiger - Have you?
OleBobbyTiger
OleBobbyTiger - 11/9/2023, 12:56 PM
@MarvelZombie616 - He can't say he enjoys it or not. He hasn't seen it. He doesn't know. He decided he hated it without even seeing it. Refuses to watch it. And wants the world to know and respect his opinion.

If someone refuses to eat at a restaurant would you respect their review of it? Why should we respect the review of a person who refuses to watch a movie.
mountainman
mountainman - 11/9/2023, 12:59 PM
@RoberTiger - Not projecting hatred, just sharing that these elements (that are the focus of this article) are not appealing. As was said on another article my opinion doesn’t have to upset you so much.

Many of us don’t want this stuff in our CBMs and saying so and not giving them money is how we signal to the studios to stop doing this nonsense. On this site, we comment on articles. All comments don’t have to mirror your opinion.

@RoberTiger - If a restaurant served turd sandwiches, I wouldn’t have to eat there to know that I wouldn’t like the food.
OleBobbyTiger
OleBobbyTiger - 11/9/2023, 1:06 PM
@mountainman - What opinion? You haven't seen it. You have no opinion of it. You're just hating it.

I get that it's not your cup of tea. Nobody is forcing you to read articles about it, or watch it. In fact the best way to share your disinterest is to not spend money or time on it. Yet you keep coming back to article after article to hate on it. And then you get upset when people call you a hater. My guy. You don't understand what a hater is. Have you no mirrors?
mountainman
mountainman - 11/9/2023, 1:26 PM
@RoberTiger - Non-positive opinions do not make someone a hater. I don't enjoy eating black olives and if my favorite restaurant changed their menu to force them into every dish, I would also vocalize my dislike of that, which also wouldn't make me a hater.

Let's see how this performs at the box office to see if your opinion or mine is the majority one.

@mountainman - I command you for the attempt, but I tried that same analogy with him 2 days ago and he just doesn't get it, he'd go ahead and eat the entire turd just so he can say 'well at least now I know for sure it was shit'. He'd most likely eat the next turd too, because 'I can't know it's gonna taste like the first one since I haven't eaten it yet'

He's the equivalent of a real-life Ralph Wiggum.
OleBobbyTiger
OleBobbyTiger - 11/9/2023, 3:03 PM
@mountainman - Good luck. What opinion of the movie have I expressed?
OleBobbyTiger
OleBobbyTiger - 11/9/2023, 3:05 PM
@OrgasmicPotatoe - You guys don't get it.

Take the resaturant analogy... you can say "I don't like the menu so I won't eat there" Fine. No problem. You can't say "Their food is bad so I won't eat there." Because you don't know.

I'm intentionally ignoring the "turd sandwhich" comments as that is a ridiculous argument. I know you think you are winning, but what you are doing with that is being too absurd to take seriously.
mountainman
mountainman - 11/9/2023, 3:11 PM
@RoberTiger - What about my black olive analogy at a restaurant that I used to love?

I used to love the MCU, and I’ve encountered a lot of “black olives in my food” in recent years. While I haven’t tried this dish yet, it sure appears to have black olives in it. Why wouldn’t I express my disappointment that a restaurant I used to love has changed and produced food I no longer like? I don’t have to eat the dish to know that I won’t like it.
