THE MARVELS Holds Steady At 61% On Rotten Tomatoes With A Much Better Audience Score

The Marvels is now showing in theaters worldwide, and it looks like general audiences are getting a bit more out of the divisive MCU sequel than the majority of critics...

The Marvels is now in theaters, and while reviews for the 33rd Marvel Studios movie have been mixed, fans seem to be getting a little more out of Nia DaCosta's space-set superhero adventure.

After initially hitting Rotten Tomatoes with a "rotten" score, the Captain Marvel sequel has climbed to 61% with 204 reviews counted. That score could very easily slip back to below 60%, and the movie is unlikely to see "Certified Fresh" status, but its Audience Score is sitting at a much more encouraging 85% with 250+ verified ratings.

Critical and audience reactions aside, The Marvels is looking at a rocky debut at the box office.

The latest updates indicate that the movie could take in just $60 million to $65 million from 4,000 North American theaters over the weekend, which would give it one of the lowest openings in MCU history. International forecasts are slightly better ($80 million for a worldwide start of $140 million), however, and the sequel could benefit from positive word-of-mouth.

Do you plan on seeing The Marvels in theaters this weekend, or did the reviews put you off? Drop us a comment down below.

"The Marvels is far from the best Marvel Studios has to offer, but it's difficult not to get swept up in its infectious energy... to a point," we said in our review. "A disjointed third act lets it down, but a game cast and plenty of fun/funny moments elevate it above more lacklustre MCU fare (we're looking at you, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumnia)."

"In Marvel Studios’ The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as The Marvels.”

The film also stars Zawe Ashton and Park Seo-joon. Nia DaCosta directs, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Mary Livanos and Matthew Jenkins serve as executive producers. The screenplay is by Megan McDonnell, Nia DaCosta, Elissa Karasik and Zeb Wells.

The Marvels will begin its international rollout on November 8, and was recently granted a China release on November 10, day-and-date with North America.

@FireandBlood -

Pleasant surprise, but I wouldn't bet on it staying that high for much longer. They're gonna use "the old ways"...

@DrReedRichards - Have you seen some of the star ratings?

5/5 4.5/5 4/5

And using words like excellent and the best Marvel movie in years.

Not surprised there are those, but I'll get back to you once I get a more analytical view on how the percentages compare to one another, between 5/5 and 1/5.

@FireandBlood - yea, some people STILL don't realize that the majority of people do not engage online in comment sections and stuff like that. So online hate doesn't equal real world hate. It was a good movie and people enjoyed it.

Ive watched it yesterday.
It was a fun movie.

Post-credits scene for me was a "holy shit"

@OptimusCrime - I'm posting in every story I go to. Very pleasant surprise. Everyone looked like they were having a great time. All 3 leads were charming, especially Velani and including Larson, lol. Not too long. Looked good in 3D. Awesome ending and mid credit scene. People should go.

@Gmoney84 - she was certainly the best part. She deserves her own movie, not sure we need another CM.

I had to cancel my original movie time and book another time. So I booked a regal 4dx imax show and there were only 4 seats booked for a 2:30pm show today. Holy shit

I've never seen a mcu movie have an empty theater on day of release before
I know ALL the reasons why the movie isn't getting the sales (no promo due to strike, deteriorating confidence in mcu, mcu haters, women haters, Brie haters, stars a Muslim girl, yadda yadda)
I'm just still taken back by the reality of it

It's comic films in general.

If it ain't a well known character audiences don't care anymore.

Having to watch C list characters to follow a main story? Those days are done.

@AmazingFILMporg - I agree that's part of the "comicbook fatigue" being thrown around. We saw it with blue beetle (which looked like a perfectly entertaining movie, but hes relatively unknown).

Capt marvel made a billi. Due to many reasons. But a lot of that should have folded over to the sequel too right? It's the same exact character. And we saw her arm wrestle thanos to the ground in Endgame. 2 billion dollars worth of people saw her 1on1 thanos. So she's well known even if Ms marvel and Monica aren't known.

But again I agree with your point. And I wonder if this point was brought up in the Disney retreat. 🤔

@Vigor - Where where these woman haters during Wonder Woman or the first Captain Marvel film? is it really that hard a concept to grasp that that film simply didn't look good so the audience didn't bother to waste their time on?

Let's be real here....

If the first Captain marvel film wasn't right after one of the biggest cliffhangers in cinematic history (infinity war) then the film would've made 650 to 750 million tops.

I liked the first Captain marvel but let's be real it wasn't 1 billion dollar good😂

It was samwich between infinity war and endgame so people rushed to see it.💁

The genre needs to slllllloooooooow doooooown.😳

Vigor
Vigor - 11/10/2023, 11:25 AM
@HashTagSwagg - both can be true. A movie can not look good AND there can be those who dislike women leads. There's someone here (I forgot his username) I was talking to the other day who isn't seeing the marvels 2 because "there aren't enough men in the movie".

That's literally what he said to me lol
So trust me bud, women haters exist. Some people really feel that a women centric story simply isn't for them. It's the same thing with Ms marvel. Some people said they wouldn't watch it because "they couldn't relate". Why because she's Muslim and a woman? They won't say that part out loud. They don't realize ms marvel is a young burgeoning superhero just like spiderman is. Ignore her skin color and the fact she has female organs. But I digress. Hope I answered your question
Vigor
Vigor - 11/10/2023, 11:26 AM

Vigor
Vigor - 11/10/2023, 11:39 AM
@HashTagSwagg - exactly. And I cited them as 1 of a handful of reasons why the movie has low pre-sales (before reviews even dropped).
HashTagSwagg
HashTagSwagg - 11/10/2023, 11:49 AM
@Vigor - If they weren't there for the 1st, why would you still include them for the 2nd? The reality is more than likely people who saw the first didn't like it enough to want to check out the second and whatever new stuff they brought in to try and win them back wasn't enough. When you got successful films like blade 1 and 2 and the first BP, you don't get to play the race card when your films blows it's load, that's an excuse and those films prove it, else they would never have gotten the appeal they have.
Vigor
Vigor - 11/10/2023, 12:15 PM
@HashTagSwagg - "If they weren't there for the 1st, why would you still include them for the 2nd? "

The very specific group im talking about ikely reluctantly saw the first one because it tied into endgame. That was back when mcu was at its peak

Also why are you harping on this very small point out of everything I said? You should ask yourself that. You also have a neckbeard as your profile photo. Is there something you want to share with us about yourself?
Itwasme
Itwasme - 11/10/2023, 12:41 PM
@HashTagSwagg - they were all over CM. It's a bit revisionist to say they weren't there. The thing is, this is a very vocal minority. Yes this minority has grown, but its still small. Most people don't care. The biggest film of the year was also one of the most feminist.

What's ironic is that audience will claim the studios are pandering to certain audiences by having a female lead, but what they are really complaining about is that they aren't being pondered to themselves.

It was the first MCU movie headed by a female hero. Plenty of girls and women went who may not have gone to see the average MCU film. Yes, it held a key place between Blockbuster 1 and Blockbuster 2 but I dont' think that accounts for it.

I did my best to get through Ms Marvel and while I found the first few episodes interesting I had a hard time with the teenage girl aspect and, well, the plot kind of sucked after a while. Love the character but not enough to grind out the final 4 episodes and that's OK. Nothing says you have to watch everything. Same with the comics. Out of all the titles published when I was reading comics I only read the handful that interested me.

@AmazingFILMporg - Well no DC next year except for Joker 2 and that almost doesn't count to me and Deadpool 3 is it for Marvel Studios, so you are getting your wish. I think we get 3 Sony turds, however. I have no faith in them. Except for animated Spidey, their movies actually suck.

Some perspective on audience scores:

- Blue Beetle - 92%
- The Flash - 83%
- Black Adam - 88%
- Shazam 2 - 86%
- Ant Man 3 - 82%

Each of these was a financial disappointment and most of them did poorly with critics.

We’ve now entered the phase with super hero movies where a lot of them are doing poorly with critics and at the box office. A lot of the fans are turned off and not seeing them in theaters. The ones that do, are the die hard fans that tend to like all these movies.

A larger percentage of a smaller audience is enjoying these things. That isn’t a win for the studio or the properties themselves.
