After suffering the worst second-weekend drop of any MCU film, The Marvels is in danger of finishing its theatrical run as the lowest-grossing Marvel Studios movie of all time.

Based on the latest stats, the Nia DaCosta-directed Captain Marvel sequel is expected to end its box office run somewhere between $210 million and $240 million worldwide. This would not only mean it'll fail to make back its reported $270 million budget (before marketing/promotion costs), but it would also come in under the current lowest-earner, The Incredible Hulk ($265 million).

It's crazy to think that a sequel to one of the studio's biggest success stories (Captain Marvel took in over $1 billion worldwide) might emerge as its biggest flop, but here we are.

What does this mean for the MCU? We wouldn't be writing off the franchise just yet, but it does seem clear that general audiences simply haven't been as invested in The Multiverse Saga as they were the Infinity Saga, so Kevin Feige is almost certainly planning to make some changes going forward - even if it's not something he'd acknowledge publicly.

What did you make of The Marvels? Are you surprised that it's been performing so badly? Drop us a comment down below.

"The Marvels is far from the best Marvel Studios has to offer, but it's difficult not to get swept up in its infectious energy... to a point," we said in our review. "A disjointed third act lets it down, but a game cast and plenty of fun/funny moments elevate it above more lacklustre MCU fare (we're looking at you, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumnia)."

"In Marvel Studios’ The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as The Marvels.”

The film also stars Zawe Ashton and Park Seo-joon. Nia DaCosta directs, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Mary Livanos and Matthew Jenkins serve as executive producers. The screenplay is by Megan McDonnell, Nia DaCosta, Elissa Karasik and Zeb Wells.

Somehow someone will come to try to put a positive spin on this news.

@Urubrodi - Lol. You wouldn't believe the amount of coping over this movie failing on x/twitter. It's pretty hilarious.

@Mercwitham0uth - I still can't believe the amount of protection this movie gets while at the same time everyone is screaming for us to be more positive about it. 🤣

Where's all that positivity for the flash, black Adam, or now madame web?

@Urubrodi - "Biggest Second Weekend Drop For A Black Female Director"!!! Isn't that how they've been "celebrating" this one?
Mercwitham0uth
Mercwitham0uth - 11/20/2023, 10:51 AM
@Origame - I think it's funny that if you say anything critical about the film you get labeled as racist, misogynistic, you must hate woman, yadda yadda yadda.

The NPC talking points amuse me.

@Mercwitham0uth - I called this months ago, and so many users wanted to call me a variety of these names. Meanwhile those of us with eyeballs, saw this coming from a mile away.

Nothing about this movie looked remotely interesting.
Mercwitham0uth
Mercwitham0uth - 11/20/2023, 11:02 AM
@ImBatman4realz - True.

The first films box office success was a fluke. It was riding off of the Infinity War/Endgame hype.

That film got the same reaction from a lot of people who didn't like it.

There are so many good films where a female is the lead.

The only difference is those movies had good stories and were well written.

@Urubrodi - How dare the toxic fans and trolls make this movie not a success, it's ALL their fault obviously, what other reason would people possibly have to not go and see this film??
DevilsDreams

@Origame - I'm half surprised he wasn't called Adam of colour.
ImBatman4realz
ImBatman4realz - 11/20/2023, 11:11 AM
@Mercwitham0uth - I tried to point out recently to Josh, the reception has nothing to do with the female lead point.

It has everything to do with the poor quality, and the fillmaker/actor’s angle that the movie is only for a certain demographic. That whole argument is the sound of a p!sspoor excuse
Urubrodi
Urubrodi - 11/20/2023, 11:16 AM
@ImBatman4realz - And the fact that Marvel Studios as a brand is not as strong as it once was, so lesser known characters will require stronger stories to sell instead of just being Marvel characters.
Origame
Origame - 11/20/2023, 11:18 AM
@Mercwitham0uth - and that's what makes the hate for madame web and black Adam so funny. Madame web is female led with a black woman in one of the lead roles, and black Adam is incredibly diverse. Yet none of that was considered worth protecting.

Come to think of it, disney is like the only studio that regularly calls its audience racist and sexist for not accepting their films 🤔

@DevilsDreams - maybe that's why it didn't get the usuals defending it 🤣

@Urubrodi - I guess it should be a woman doing the spin, circumstantially, but you know it goes...

Mercwitham0uth
Mercwitham0uth - 11/20/2023, 11:24 AM
@ImBatman4realz - Yeah when actors/directors start insulting a certain demographic that's when I lose interest.

Also hilarious when the movie tanks and then they blame the people they insulted for the failure.

The logic is just dumb.

That's like the kkk doing a food drive and it failing. Then they blame all other races for the drive failing. But what do you expect with small brains?
TheNewYorker
TheNewYorker - 11/20/2023, 11:50 AM
@Urubrodi - it’s trash. Let it die in peace.
Mercwitham0uth
Mercwitham0uth - 11/20/2023, 12:12 PM
@Origame - Yeah it's pretty mental.

Black Adam just flat out stunk.

Madame Web... It'll suck regardless. It is Sony with a Marvel label slapped onto it afterall.
Sony isn't known for quality when it comes to Marvel properties.

But like you said when it comes to Marvel Studios, some people seem to think they're exempt from flaws or failure. It's pretty sad.
Origame
Origame - 11/20/2023, 2:37 PM
@Mercwitham0uth - honestly I think disney is feeding into fanboyism by painting this as if they're the victims.
Goldboink
Goldboink - 11/20/2023, 8:55 PM
@Urubrodi - It's actually a good movie. You should try it.
TheOtherOn
TheOtherOn - 11/21/2023, 1:46 AM
@Urubrodi - There you go!

Now since this is out of the way, it's very obvious why the first one made all that money as it was pointed out back in the day by many AND myself after I stopped watching that Craptain Marvel half way thru and to this day I haven't finished it neither do I have any desire to finish.

First one was "smartly" SANDWTICHED between Infinity War and End Game. Just like Iron-Man 3 (another crap movie) was right after first The Avengers movie.

Urubrodi - 11/21/2023, 3:20 AM

Goldboink - 11/21/2023, 2:39 PM
@Urubrodi - For any number of reasons you are correct. Maybe people will be bored out of their skulls this weekend and take the whole family to see it but the damage is already done.

To put this into further context, morbius made $160 mil at the box office. While that sounds worse, you have to remember it only cost $80 mil to make. So without counting money made by streaming or DVD sales, morbius was fairly close to breaking even. Whereas the marvels won't even make back the budget.

Tl;Dr, the marvels is doing worse than the worst of Sony 🤣

@ImBatman4realz - exactly. I think many fans are just so used to dunking on Sony they didn't notice the quality is actually better there.

Not that they're good, but better.
