THE MARVELS' Nia DaCosta Reveals How A FINAL FANTASY Movie Helped Land Her The Directing Gig

Although Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children was largely panned when it was first released in 2005, The Marvels director Nia DaCosta appears to be a huge fan.

When Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children debuted in 2005, it received a lot of negative feedback from both reviewers and fans. But an odd thing has been happening recently: an increasing number of millennials are beginning to look back on the movie in a more favorable light.

When the film debuted, a good number of fans of Final Fantasy VII praised it for its action sequences, breathtaking graphics, and faithfulness to the original game, while nongamers criticized it for its convoluted story, pacing, and one-note characters.

In recent years, the film has gotten more positive reviews from fans, with many praising its emotional depth and treatment of topics such as loss, grief, and redemption. The film's popularity has also been increased by its release on Blu-ray and streaming services, which has made it more accessible to a wider audience.

You can count The Marvels Nia DaCost among Advent Children's newfound supporters. Speaking to IGN, she revealed that she actually referenced the CG animated video game film in her pitch meeting to Marvel Studios.

"One of my references when I was pitching for [The Marvels] was from Advent Children. A couple of scenes from that because it's just an amazing, amazing movie, and has really great fight scenes and has a really great ending sequence with the main character being thrown into the sky by all the other characters," explained the Nora Ephron Prize-winning director.

She went on to add, "I actually didn't want [The Marvels] to look like a video game in the sense of what you think of when you think of video game, it's more linear, but obviously they're so cinematic as well.  Think about The Last of Us cutscenes, or Horizon Zero Daen cutscenes but it's a very different style.  So for me, it was from the best kinds of games, the best kinds of stories you get, that's what inspires me to play and inspires people to watch movies like this."

It seems DaCosta is a big gamer as she went on to share that she loves Skyrim and most recently finished playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Who knew the director of a big-budget MCU film would be such a huge gamer?!

Wait, you used a dark, serious anime to pitch your goofy marvel comedy?

@Origame - maybe she was just talking about the action?
Origame
Origame - 11/10/2023, 8:27 AM
@bkmeijer1 - I mean, that really can't be the case. Marvel is infamous for keeping its action pretty uniformal. Black widow even lost a potential director because they wouldn't let her touch the action scenes.

@Origame - as an avid anime watcher, i didnt get the feeling that the action was inspired by it.

Need more lessons from Michael B Jordan and Creed 3

@vectorsigma - Michael b Jordan is such an anime nerd. I love it.

@Origame - Dark Serious anime? This is about Advent Children, the one with zero blood, miraculously none of the good guys die, with the lovey-dovey scenes & music and the talking robot cat.

@Origame - sure, the movie took itself very serious but was full of goofy moments. FF is capable of blending comedy with self serious protagonists like Cloud or Vincent.

@Havenless - don’t forget Sephiroth being reborn by Kadaj chest-ffing Genovas head.
I liked it a lot but it surely wasn’t all serious
Origame
Origame - 11/10/2023, 10:21 AM
@Havenless - ok, it has zero blood because it's still intended for a wide international release.

As for the rest, you clearly don't know anime because literally all of that can be included to a dark serious anime.

@Blergh - you're confusing goofy with weird. To that I say, well, welcome to anime.

Gantz had a guy killed by an old man who turned into a giant kaiju comprised of naked women. Are you seriously gonna tell me gantz isn't a dark serious anime?

@Origame - kinda forgot about that. Guess she was talking about another thing then, because I doubt it was the tone

@bkmeijer1 - I'm kinda wondering if this was just something said for marketing to give some nerd cred to the film.

@Origame - even if it's for nerd cred, it wins me over. Same with Shawn Levy. They say stuff that make me think "well, atleast we got movie nerds making nerd movies now"

@bkmeijer1 - I don't really give it the credit they want if it doesn't amount to anything in the film.

Being a Marvel Comic Book Reader and fan hoping that all Marvel Studios projects succeed isn't really that shocking, is it?

@AllsGood - Rather than just succeed, wouldn’t you want them to be good to great?

Ahh, Final Fantasy VII. The best video game ever made.

I’d love to see the game turned into a trilogy of movies someday.

@thewanderer - Final Fantasy 7 was my favourite PS1 game and yes the best game on the system.
However best game ever? Don't know I would consider The Legend Of Zelda:Ocarina Of Time though.

@thewanderer - I liked how Advent Children served as an epilogue to the game and IMO that’s the perfect way to approach it.
It’s a sequel to a story, not a retread of what we’ve already seen and experienced.
Personally FF movies should stick to prequels like “Kingsglaive” or sequels like “Advent Children”.
I was generally hoping for them doing a new one adjacent to FF16 as a way to hype up that story but I assume Covid got in the way of that.

Regardless of whether or not I end up liking the film, DaCosta seems pretty cool.

I used to be obsessed with Advent Children. It was the first movie I ever bought on my own with allowance money. And that church with Tifa vs Loz? Bruh! Chef's kiss.

Nice that she's a fan of that movie, I liked it a lot too and even got it on DVD back then because I wanted to know more after the events of the game.

The Bahamut fight and the OST are unforgettable to me.

Sounds like she is spewing random nonsense and just naming popular cool stuff. I love Advent Children and I didn't see a single scene in the Marvels that reminded of that movie. I did see Spaceballs and some other stuff that seemed to be copied though.
