THE MARVELS Now Looks Set For One Of The Lowest Box Office Openings In MCU History

The latest box office projections are in, and Marvel Studios' Captain Marvel sequel now looks set to come in on the lower end of those initial estimates with just $60 million...

The Marvels never looked like it was shaping up to be a massive hit, but since arriving on tracking a few weeks ago, ongoing estimates have indicated that the Captain Marvel sequel could be entering into flop territory.

Now, the updated projections for Marvel Studios' latest big-screen release are in, and it could end up with one of the lowest opening weekends in MCU history.

According to Variety, the space-set adventure is expected to generate just $60 million to $65 million from 4,000 North American theaters when it arrives in theaters this weekend. 2008’s The Incredible Hulk is still at the bottom of the ladder with $55.4 million, followed by 2015’s Ant-Man with $57.2 million - although Scott Lang's first solo outing did go on to take in a respectable (for the time, at least) $519 million globally.

Could The Marvels also benefit from positive word of mouth? The movie does look set for a slightly better international bow ($80 million for a worldwide start of $140 million), but reviews have not been overly positive. As things stand, the sequel is sitting at 58% on Rotten Tomatoes with 114 verdicts counted.

"The Marvels is far from the best Marvel Studios has to offer, but it's difficult not to get swept up in its infectious energy... to a point," we said in our review. "A disjointed third act lets it down, but a game cast and plenty of fun/funny moments elevate it above more lacklustre MCU fare (we're looking at you, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumnia)."

"In Marvel Studios’ The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as The Marvels.”

The film also stars Zawe Ashton and Park Seo-joon. Nia DaCosta directs, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Mary Livanos and Matthew Jenkins serve as executive producers. The screenplay is by Megan McDonnell, Nia DaCosta, Elissa Karasik and Zeb Wells.

The Marvels will begin its international rollout on November 8, and was recently granted a China release on November 10, day-and-date with North America.

I’m tempted to go see it since I haven’t been to the movies since the summer. At the same time, I just don’t want to.

Just let Cap Marvel go, Kev.

I don't think anyone would mind though.

Ant Man had a production budget of $130 million, so the WW BO of $518 million turned a good profit.

The Marvels would have to make above a billion to have the same profit margin.

@CoHost - You’re literally too [frick]ing dumb to respond to if you think liking the writing of a show is the same as admiring a character’s moral backbone. I really hope you never see the wolf of wall street, or else i’m afraid you’d start pursuing white collar crimes

@CoHost - Belfort’s pretty much everything reprehensible about modern banking. If you find anything admirable about him, then I think you should stick to Captain America movies so you don’t learn any bad morals from a lack of media literacy :(

They won. We lost. Deal with it.

Least we can do is learn and adapt.

@DrReedRichards - they won what lol? They'll be playing this song and dance again in 8 months with the next movie. There is no win for them because they are fighting a losing battle. Mcu isn't going anywhere.

@DrReedRichards - I honestly think there's only losers in this. Anyone who comes to a comic book movie website everyday and hope comic book movies fail is a special kind of... well special.

I, for one, am not ready for CBMs to go the way of the western and I still enjoy these movies and shows
DrReedRichards
DrReedRichards - 11/8/2023, 5:40 PM
@Toonstrack -

Critically, financially, commercially, this film is about to be a failure on all fronts. There's just no sugar-coating it, my man. Having seen it, the best compliment I can give it s that it's at least not as bad as Thor 4. And with how vocally pro-MCU I am, this should tell you all you need to know.

I know the usual morons in here have been gloating prematurely and immaturely since 2016, even if more than half of them now try to pretend that they've been singing the MCU its praises up until now, but even a broken clock is right twice a day.

This is one of those times.
DrReedRichards
DrReedRichards - 11/8/2023, 5:44 PM
@MyCoolYoung -

But they're not hoping for ALL comic book movies to fail... are they?

Just don't ask them now, since like I said in my previous comment they'll pretend to have been fans of the MCU all this time. Instead, they'll feign vagueness with non-specific labels like "good movied" or conveniently non-MCU examples like Logan or TDK. Or if they do bring up any MCU positiv example, expect it 9/10 times to be TWS.

It's all so overplayed and transparent at this point...
BlackSpider
BlackSpider - 11/8/2023, 5:46 PM
@DrReedRichards - Yes but now as you can see most of them post cringe inducing gifs, and have weird gimmick accounts. So really they have lost at life
mountainman
mountainman - 11/8/2023, 5:47 PM
@MyCoolYoung - Many of us critical of modern Marvel don’t want the movies to go away either. We just want them to improve. Bad movies will lead to the downfall of the genre and only two (Spiderverse and Guardians) CBMs have been good this year.
BlackSpider
BlackSpider - 11/8/2023, 5:49 PM
@mountainman - Hot take, its not really wrong to want the movies to go away. Cbms time is mostly over, so its ok to want them gone or just to stop. Even if the movies improve, people are mostly tired of them now.

@Tigerman33 - I don’t see them going away

We might get less of them which won’t necessarily be a bad thing .
DrReedRichards
DrReedRichards - 11/8/2023, 5:51 PM
@Tigerman33 -

That's okay. Let them cower.

They've chosen to play the part of the sympathetic friend for a few days, so now they're just counting the minutes until they can feel safe enough to start gloating again.

Let them itch. It's the smallest victory I can get, but I'm getting it.
BlackSpider
BlackSpider - 11/8/2023, 5:52 PM
@DrReedRichards - Meh, its endless cycle. It doesent make them any less of losers really. They, like this whole cbm thing, is ending imo
mountainman
mountainman - 11/8/2023, 5:53 PM
@Tigerman33 - Oh I’ve heard that from some people.

I would like the quantity of releases to slow down, which I think would lead to better productions (or at least fewer bad ones coming out).

There were 8 released this year. We can maybe say 3 got good reviews (if you count Blue Beetle) and only 2 financially successful so far.

8 in a year is over saturation that leads to more in the GA getting sick of the genre. And Kraven was delayed so there were originally 9 scheduled.

@DrReedRichards - While I don't disagree with your opinion (and, to be fair, I rarely find disagreement in your words), I can't allow the nay-sayers to drag me down and hand them a W just yet. I want to believe this weekend is going to surprise a lot of folks and Marvel has had enough time to course correct itself away from a flop. Whether that makes me a complete tool, I'm not sure. All I know is I'm excited for tomorrow night and going to walk into the theater with my head up high and carrying no worries.
BlackSpider
BlackSpider - 11/8/2023, 5:55 PM
@mountainman - Well prehaps they want the whole machine mcu, dcu, sony thing to end.

Individual cbms, like the batman every now and then are fine.
DrReedRichards
DrReedRichards - 11/8/2023, 6:00 PM
@Skestra -

Best case scenario I can imagine right now, at least financially, is that the low runtime allows for as much of a boost as possible, with several screenings throughout the day.

It'll be a small but sweet victory to overperorm after such low projections.
