Marriage Of MARVEL And DC

Marvel and DC respect each other. So you should too!

I'm actually more of a Marvel fan and especially a Captain America fan. I was catching up on the newest issue(s) of Remender's Captain America story. The newest arc starts off with Pym and Banner working to restore the physical damage to Steve Rogers after he returned from Dimension Z.

Cap is actually going through memories of his childhood and his mother's death, which is his inspiration for going on through everything that life throws at him. I was admiring the artwork and noticed a name. Like I said, I'm more of a Marvel fan, but I do read a couple DC titles, have watched all the Justice League and JLU, and play DC Universe Online (if you play PC, look me up as "Ms SuperSoldier" on the PVE server).

With that said, I noticed a name on one of the graves. Jay Garr...sounded to me like Jay Garrick who is the "original" Flash. There was a grave next to it with the name "Rex Tyler" so I decided to look it up. Sure enough, it's the name of another DC hero named Hourman. Why were they put in a Captain America comic on graves in Steve Roger's past?!

Based on what I know of the Flash's origin, they all have chemicals which give them their powers. Well, Bruce Banner's powers came about as a result of gamma radiation or rather a chemical change. Rex Tyler's powers came about from his love of science. Henry Pym's powers also came about from his love of science. I believe the DC names on the graves in the panels of Captain America V7 #11 (ongoing Marvel NOW title 2013) are supposed to represent the two scientists (Pym and Banner) who are trying to revive Rogers from death. Also, Hourman and Ant-Man are similar names (through the use of XXX-man) and similar scientific backgrounds and The Flash and The Hulk are similar in chemical processes changing their bodies (yes, radiation is a CHEMICAL property).

As we all know, both companies draw inspiration from each other and reference each other in the comics from time to time. So basically, stop hating on one or the other as they're both fun! Anyway, I thought it was interesting and figured I'd share the nod from Marvel to DC even though it's very subtle.

Stan refers to DC as the "Distinguished Competition".

They need each other. All greats have a counterpart. Bears and packers, sox and Yankees, and Pepsi and coke. It makes it fun to be part of something and to take jabs at the others... Until someone go to far.
