Here's something I made up while gearing up for the recent Marvel Cinematic Universe announcements and upcoming projects. It's based partially on order of release and partially on what I think makes the most sense taking the content of all the enries into account. It's really just for fun but could probably be used for reference if someone was trying to get completely caught up on the universe. Click on the image below to see the full size.

Hope y'all like it! If you want to see more of my infographics or hear my podcast about shared movie universes then check out the webite, look around and subscribe if you feel so inclined! Click on the image above to hear my episode on Guardians of the Galaxy where my cohost and I review the movie and break down pretty much everything about it.

I'm always wondering what order to actually watch them in but I tend o START at The First Avenger.

Love the infographic. Very classy.

It's a tricky one when deciding on an order because you have to ask yourself do you want to watch stuff in chronological order or in an order that was intended by the studios.

The chronological version is fun - I've even managed to watch a fan-edit of all the phase one stuff in chronological order.

But there is still something cool about watching them in release order - and awaiting the big reveals and surprises as planned.

Yeah I'm fascinated by the piecing together of such a vast universe once it has so many pieces. I certainly see the value in the in-continuity chronological watch but I just love the whole phase system they've utilized and especially how they're making the TV shows exist alongside the films and all. Fun to diagram - it's mostly all about what NOT to watch before you've met the prerequisites

Strictly speaking what Stark creates in IM2 isn't a Tesseract but a new element that has been created by Howard Starks work on the Tesseract.

The original arc reactor Howard makes in the 60's is based on his research of the Tesseract (that he discovered looking for Cap in the 40's) and which Tony miniaturized in IM1.

The new element is the next stage.

Iron Man 3 connects to Agents of SHIELD WAY more than it does to Thor 2?

@Orphix

Good breakdown of all that

@Pitt

This whole concept is supported all the more my the fact that they use pretty much the exact same sound effect for the Tesseract-powered weapons in TFA as the arc reactor repulsor sound

@Dandy

Good call on the fact that there’s two ways to look at it – it always brings to my mind the whole argument of whether to show somebody the Star Wars films for the first time in release order or episode order
EnSabahNur

@homodrome

Good point because of the Extremis and AIM references. Next time I update I'll use an arrow to indicate that IM3 should be viewed before starting in on AoS

I just assume maybe that's the element that the tesseract is made of, but its a tiny tiny amount in Tony's suit, and making much more would be unfeasible. There you go, some headcanon for you ;)

That’s excellent, and at the end of the day I’d say that’s totally the way to go about it - but hopefully you kinda enjoyed looking at the visual flow of the thing I made =]

Yeah just like homodrome said, that could certainly use a tweak. The shows and one-shots are sort of shown as tangents off of the main movie course but I could definitely indicate that IM3 should be viewed before AoS

@dandy I like your list that's what I try to do. But just to tweak it a bit the agent Carter short was actually confirmed to takes place after season 1, and I usually watch the incredible hulk after Thor. So for me I'd put the incredible hulk and the consultant after thor

@GliderMan

I LOVE the the idea of watching all these movies in in-continuity chronological order. I think that that kind of thing is very fun - but I only feel that way because I know it all so well. I think there's a lot to be said for watching things in order of release because of the cinematic intentions. Our introduction to Nick Fury comes at the end of Iron Man and then when he shows up at the end of Captain America we know him and why he's there. You wouldn't want to meet C-3PO for the first time as a weird naked robot in the Phantom Menace, would you? I don't think any of this deserves any sort of argument by the way - I just think it's fun to discuss =]

@TheShape Indeed! Thanks for pitching in with that. You'll notice I've actually updated the graphic to reflect that by showing an arrow going from IM3 to AoS (implying that if you're trying to take in all of the installments, you should not watch the pilot of AoS before watching IM3). The "timeline" does not necessarily go from left to right in all cases, it's more about what arrows lead to what entries. Thanks again!
