And so begins The Accursed part one. We begin with a small group of dark elves who travel to Hel in an attempt to break their former king, Malekith the Accursed, out of the Hall of Nastrond. Ron Garney does a great job of making Niffleheim, the frozen land of Hel, actually look and feel freezing cold. The transition from the icy realm of Niffleheim to the warm, mead filled halls of Asgard is definitely felt. Overall, the colors are much smoother, and invoke a more fantasy adventure tone.
Malekith is truly an intimidating force. Every word he says chills you, and sends a tingle down your spine. Every threat he says is real. He has no boundaries or limitations that will stop him from completing his malicious crusade. We see that there is a division between the dark elves. There are those that will not hesitate for a moment to stand behind his ruthless actions, even laying down their own lives for the sake of their Lord. On the other side however, there are those who reject the king of old, and want absolutely nothing to do with him. This puts us in an interesting situation I think because it opens up the possibility for Thor to gain a dark elf ally who opposes Malekith sometime in the near future.
Opening very strong, Thor and crew are no doubt in for some headaches throughout this five part series as Malekith wreaks havoc across the nine realms. If you haven't picked it up yet I would strongly recommended jumping into God Of Thunder. “The wild hunt has begun!”
