"We have an African-American president, so why not an African-American Spider-Man, too?"
Brian Truitt has the exclusive interview with Ultimate Spider-Man writer Brian Bendis on the identity of the new (Ultimate) Spider-Man.
What Bendis says about the theme of the new storyline:
"The theme is the same: With great power comes great responsibility," says writer Brian Michael Bendis. "He's going to learn that. Then he has to figure out what that means."
MARVEL's new E.I.C. Alex Alonso has this to say about Mr. Morales:
"What you have is a Spider-Man for the 21st century who's reflective of our culture and diversity. We think that readers will fall in love with Miles Morales the same way they fell in love with Peter Parker."
The new Spider-Man is a half-black, half-Hispanic teen named Miles Morales.

"He looked fantastic!" Bendis recalls. "I saw him in the costume and thought, 'I would like to read that book.' So I was glad I was writing that book."
He also added:
"It's certainly long overdue," Bendis says. "Even though there's some amazing African-American and minority characters bouncing around in all the superhero universes, it's still crazy lopsided."
"Wouldn't it be nice for them to have a character or a hero that speaks to them as much as Peter Parker has spoken to so many children?" Bendis says. "There's nothing wrong with that, and I think we need more of it."
