Producer Jerry Bruckheimer Discusses Future of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN Franchise

Jerry Bruckheimer discusses the future of Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, what will come first, and what speculation has been attached to the project.

In a recent interview with Brandon Davis (@BrandonDavisBD) for comicbook.com, Jerry Bruckheimer shared some thoughts on the sixth film of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

When asked what film will come first, the next Top Gun or the next installment of Pirates of the Caribbean. "It's hard to tell. You don't know, you really don't know," Bruckheimer began. "You don't know how they come together. You just don't know. Because with Top Gun you have an actor who is iconic and brilliant. And how many movies he does before he does Top Gun, I can't tell you. But we're gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don't have to wait for certain actors."

That last last Pirates of the Caribbean movie was released in theaters nearly seven years ago, and Disney still hasn't figured out how they would like to move forward with the franchise. There have reportedly been a lot of ideas about the future of the franchise, including a film with Margot Robbie in the lead role that would include getting Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow back into the mix.

Diving into some of the speculation a little further, the sixth movie was originally going to serve as a continuation of the fifth installment, Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017), until franchise star Johnny Depp was removed from the project due to his legal troubles with ex-wife Amber Heard.

In 2020, the aforementioned female-led Pirates spin-off movie was announced with Margot Robbie attached to star. However, the actor revealed two years later that the project was dead, stating that, while a “really cool” idea, Disney didn’t “want to do it.”

The last official update on Pirates of the Caribbean 6 came in 2023 when he Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin revealed to The LA Times that Disney had bought his and Ted Elliot’s “fantastic” script, but that the 2023 Hollywood labor disputes had halted any forward movement on the movie. While Mazin is a new addition to the franchise, Elliot co-wrote the first four Pirates of the Caribbean films with his writing partner Terry Rossio.

I have reservations about the proposed reboot, well around any reboot. I'm afraid the franchise has already died a slow death and we should just let this dying cat die. Rebooting the same storyline multiple over and over ruins the fun of the original movie.  What do you think?  Are you looking forward to another reboot, should they continue with the current storyline, or should they just let the fifth movie be its last?

Its dead thats what it is.

First 2 films were pretty good

3rd film was a mixed bag

4th and 5th were crap

Depp was the only thing keeping this series going

Without Captain Jack, the series will bomb

@dracula - I actually found the 4th to be better than 2 and 3 personally. Half of the 5th was too, but it went way off rails in the second half.

Man, that first movie is just so good and the rest, just... aren't. Two is boring, three is weird which is ok but then it just doesn't deliver on what it promises. The other two are fine-ish. Somebody someday will figure out how to make the magic continue all the way through.

@SummersEssex - First is amazing and so rewatchable. 2 and 3 are frustrating. 2 is a bit more tolerable; but there’s so much wasted potential. Mostly though, it’s the constantly changing motivations. It’s like writers confused convoluted with “good.” Those 2 movies give me actual headaches.

Never saw 3 or 4 because it looked much the same. Part 5 I was roped into the theater, and it was ok. Not great either, and Depp looked like he was not having fun anymore. But at least they streamlined the story, and didn’t have 8 subplots with 9 twists, and sudden schizophrenic characters.

@MG0019 - How on earth are motivations convoluted or changing? Jack wants to prevent being taken by Davy Jones in 2 and prevent being killed again in the third one. Will's initial motive is that he wants to protect Elizabeth and makes a deal with Jack to get Davy Jones' heart so Jack will give him the compass, until he finds out Elizabeth escaped Cutler Beckett and then his motivation becomes trying to rescue his dad, which is what his main motive in 3 is. Elizabeth longs for freedom and to get back to Will and also to get laid and then in 3, guilt for killing Jack comes in and is resolved and revenge is added on to that for her dad's death. Only person whose motives ever change in the the in mid movie is Will's and that's not constant. Barbosa wants to awaken Calypso to defeat Beckett and make good on his deal to prevent her from killing him again (or at least re-cursing him). Beckett wants power. I think these are mostly kept consistent. Elizabeth's extends from character choices.

In 2 Jack is forced to confront the deal he made with Jones and then in 3 reconciles his character arc by choosing to put Will's life over his own.

In 2 Elizabeth chooses to be a pirate (the idea that represents the freedom she longs for) but chooses to kill Jack for the sake of Will's life and others in doing so, but the guilt of it hurts her so she wants to undo it. 3 resolves that part and then Beckett's defeated and Elizabeth gets to get laid after marriage, appropriately.

I feel the only way a sixth movie would work is if they bring back all the original cast including Depp and do what the third movie should have done, a massive sea battle rather than the 2v1 & 1v1 that PotC3 ended up being.

You can even bring back Davey Jones and pay-off the teaser from the fifth film, perhaps have his influence start to take over Will Turner as if Davey Jones is more of a inevitability for whoever commands the Flying Dutchman.

Just have one final all-out battle with the characters and then end the franchise, reboot it a few years after.

Rebooting is a recipe for disaster. Pirates is Johny. It's just a fact. He is the main attraction.💁

I just rewatched this series recently. Was never a huge fan after the first, but I thought it was slightly better on rewatch.

I am not a fan of how Disney tried canceling Depp before more was known about the situation, but during that time it was the default approach.

Don’t mind that we don’t get another. Jack Sparrow was always goofy. Wasn’t a fan of how heavily it leaned into the supernatural every entry.

Barbosa was the best part of the whole series by far.

Give us an actual pirate movie. Less of the supernatural nonsense. No goofy humor. It’s tough for Disney to do an appropriate pirate movie as they want it to be family friendly and pirates were the opposite of that.

If I had to rank them:

1 > 4 > 3 > 5 > 2. May not be the most popular ranking out there, but I just hated how goofy that second one was and I actually found 4 and 5 to be better. 3 just spent too much time on weird stuff and could have had 20-30 minutes cut from it.

@MyCoolYoung - God (capital G, the One and Only YHWH Jehovah God) is the only One who is good, as The Holy Bible the truth says. No normal human is.

PLEASE, you, and EVERYONE, if you haven't already, embrace the factually only God, One and Only Jesus Christ and the One and Only Holy Spirit. God is good. God is love. Jesus is Lord. Jesus IS coming. Your soul depends on it!

I have seen God act in my life. He saved my soul, changed my heart, changed my mind, helped people through me, took care of people in my life, people I hurt before I found God. God is the only reason I was able to reconcile with my dad before he died.

God worked through Jesus Christ to save our souls. Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins. Believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, and that God raised Him from the dead, repent of your sins, accept God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit into your heart and you will be saved.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only Begotten Son Jesus Christ, that all who believe on Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Jesus Christ is The Way, The Truth and The Life. No one comes to the Father Jehovah God but through Him.

The Holy Bible says to honor all people, love thy enemy, pray for those who persecute you, if your enemy is hungry feed him, if he is thirsty give him a drink.

Not long after I got saved I prayed to God for help understanding the Holy Bible, and that same day someone knocked on my door asking me if I wanted to understand the Bible.

Robert Downey Jr

Johnny Depp of course, but in a limited role that helps the plot move forward.
