New York City, the city that never sleeps. The buildings shine brightly on this rainy night. Good thing I stayed in, not like I had anywhere to go but I like to take walks at night, see the city. Here I am in this piece of garbage apartment, watching all the seasons of Mad Men. 3 a.m.? My god, I should be in bed, I've got work in the morning.
So, I turn off the T.V., turn off the lights and crawl into bed. It screcches and screams as I make myself comfortable, or at least try. I might as well be sleeping on a pile of bricks. I finally find a comfortable enough postion, close my eyes and go to sleep.

I'm awoken by a loud bang from outside, the clocks at 5.15. Looking out the window I see people in the streets running, screaming. Why? I go out onto the balcony to investigate. Nothing on the streets. But, up in the sky, something... something, unbelievable. Lights beaming down into the city, eminating from a strange craft up in the sky, hovering. No noise coming from it. How? Something catches my eyes and they slowly drift over to a large plume of smoke where the Empire State Building should be. Oh my god! They destroyed it! I'm paralysed with fear. My heart is pounding against my chest and each breath I take becomes heavier. Something is coming out of the ship, smaller craft, hundreds of them descending into the streets.
I run back inside the apartment, get dressed and begin packing food and drink. I grab my coat and head out the door. People in the corridor are running, screaming, pushing and shoving to get to an exit. They're falling over each other, it's pure chaos. I look for a gap and make my move. I reach the stairs but when I do, something happens. The roof is sucked up and all I can hear is a ear-piercing screech. Everyone stops in their tracks, then suddenly are pulled, with enough force to break every bone in your body, out of the building and into the hovering craft above, I must've been down far enough to avoid it. I can only look up with sheer terror at the horror of it all, but there's nothing I can do. I reach the ground floor only to people outside being sucked up. What am I supposed to do? I decide to wait it out.

Two hours pass before all the chaos outside ceases but, thats hardly the end of it. I begin to hear crashing noises and go outside to investigate. Thet're leveling the city. Dust begins to fill the streets, I can hardly see anything, which probably means they can't either. I take my chance and leave, maybe I can find somebody. I stick close to the buildings, moving as quick and quiet as I can, trying to stay low so as not to inhale dust. It's eerily quiet. Through some small openings I can see the larger craft still hovering in the sky, still quiet, still motionless.

The Sun is shining brightly now, reflecting of the glass columns of the city and the dust is rising. I hear something in the distance and run to the nearest alley to hide and pray that whatever it is doesn't find me. I take a peek around the corner and see a pair of lights slowly encroaching. I get down lower, still peeking. The noise, it sounds like... the rumbling of a car engine and sure enough, that's exactly what it is. I run out of the alley towards the car, which slows down.

"Get in!" the driver says.

He's a man, looks like he's in his fifties. Two people sit in the back, alot younger than he is. Must be his kids.
I open the door and jump in.

"What's your name, son?", he asks.

I tell him my name.

"I'm John. These are my daughters, Kelly and Natalie."

Kelly looks like she's in her twenties and Natalie is just a child. The two have tears running down the side of their cheeks. Kelly is holding Natalie in her arms. John has the remnants of tears in his eyes.

"Did you... lose somebody?", I ask.

"My-", he takes a breath, "My wife.", he responds.

"I-I'm sorry to hear that. Thank you for stopping, I don't know what I would've done"

"It's no problem, son. Times like these, we all need to help each other."

"Yeah. Where, uh, where exactly are you heading?"

"Out of the city, as far away as we can get. Maybe, hopefully, find somewhere secluded enough that, whatever these things are, wouldn't bother with it."

I put my head up against the window and close my eyes, hopefully I can get some rest.

Well, that's all for now. Let me know what y'all think of the story. Any changes I could make? Any ideas I could incorporate?

Thanks for taking the time to read :D
