EDITORIAL: An In-depth review of the Avengers Assemble animated series

Is the show detailing the further adventures of the MCU's Avengers worth watching or should it not be touched with a ten-foot pole? Here is my personal opinion on the matter.

Over a month after the Avengers movie premiered in 2012 the highly-liked animated series The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes was supposedly cancelled. A year later it would be replaced by the Avengers Assemble animated series, a show that continued the adventures of the Avengers brought to life on the big screen by Joss Whedon, along with new member Falcon. From what I've seen by reading comments on here many people do not like the series for the simple fact that it replaced The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. However, as someone that has watched every episode of the Avengers Assemble series thus far I am here to give my personal opinion on the show in hopes that maybe more people will watch it.

THE GOOD:

The best thing about this show is the central plot. To put it simply the Avengers reform to fight the Red Skull, who has seemingly returned from the dead to threaten the world once more. In response to the threat that the Avengers poses to him the Red Skull forms the Cabal which consists thus far of Attuma, Dracula, the Super-Adaptoid, MODOK, and Hyperion.

Personally, I think that the story makes this show superior to Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, because the former made it seem like there was a central plot while showing filler episodes that try to introduce as many characters and use as many comic book storylines as possible. In other words, that show was mainly fan service for fans of the Avengers comics. This show on the other hand keeps the story simple by making the show Avengers vs. Cabal or Avengers vs. Doctor Doom. Also the fact that the main threat to the Avengers is the Red Skull, my favorite villain ever, is a huge plus for this show since its predecessor only used him three times.

THE BAD:

While The Avengers: EMH is more guilty of filler episodes this show is not completely innocent of the crime. There are just some episodes that are just random, unnecessary deviations from the story. For example, there's an episode where Hulk is given amnesia by a tentacle monster on the moon, and in another episode the long-forgotten Space Phantoms from Avengers#2 were brought back. In fact, in case you were wondering this show seems to be a continuation of The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes as the episode "Molecule Kid" shows.

Second, While the story is great, the way some characters are depicted is is quite bad. For example, Captain America is supposed to be a natural leader who everyone looks to for inspirational speeches, advice, etc. Instead, all Captain America seems to be is someone who is old-fashioned and does not like technology. Also this show seems to take the statement that Bruce Banner's statement "I'm always angry" quite literally since we never see Bruce Banner, and thus we don't see the inner turmoil he is known for in the comics.

VERDICT:

Overall, I give this show a 8/10 meaning that I strongly encourage people too check out this show. It is quite possibly the best comic book animated series out right now. Also I hope to see more seasons in the future where the Avengers draws in more members, and more Avengers villains debut. For example, to set up for Avengers: Age of Ultron next season could focus on Ultron as the main threat, and Ant Man and Wasp could be introduced (or return depending on whether you think this show is a continuation of Avengers: EMH). Also I am hoping Kang, Thanos, Winter Soldier, Mandarin, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver among other characters will be introduced.

I have watched every episode with my son. I liked Avengers EMH better. Not as good of animation, but it had better story telling imo. Plus a better cast. I would like them to do a flashback and tell us exactly why they disbanded before. Cause it doesn't follow the MCU. Its connected to Ultimate Spider man and the Hulk and agents of SMASH shows. Your right about Banner. That makes me mad.

I dont know why you find that so ridiculous. Thats exactly what the term "fan service" is. It means it is pandering to fans. As in, the general audience wouldn't know why certain things are so meaningful.

Lol....Attuma. This show is so weak, but I liked the episode with the Howling Commandos, lead by Blade.

It will probably never be on emh level it's not as bad everybody makes it. It had definitely gotten better in recent episode, especially the cabal related ones. It's very hit or miss with me though. Nothing is great, some bad and some are good. I wouldn't give it an 8/10, but it is watchable on a boring Sunday morning.

Btw I also don't hate aosmash, ult spidey, or ttgo either. None are really good, but I'd watch those any day before I sit down and watch most cartoons nowadays.

@Omega and @dethpillow: You should not judge a show just by clips. That's like judging a book by its cover. I encourage you to watch at least 2 or 3 episodes before you make an opinion. Specifically watch the Avengers Protocol parts 1 and 2 to get a picture of what is going on this season, and then watch every episode that features the Red Skull and the Cabal as well as any episode with Doctor Doom, because those are the best. I would not recommend watching Hulk's Day Out, Hyperion, Molecule Kid, Ghost of a Chance, Avengers: Impossible, or Savages as those are not the best (although you may watch them and disagree if you so desire).

@dethpillow: If you like Anime then Marvel has recently been developing some animes and the X-men have their own series as well as Wolverine and Iron Man. I would not be surprised though if Marvel develops an X-men animated series to go along with X-men: Days of Future Past since Ultimate Spiderman was technically released in response to The Amazing Spiderman.

@DrDoom: So what do you think about how you are depicted in this series in contrast with Avengers: EMH?

@BenjiWest: That is Ultimate Spiderman not this series.

@Doopie: How is Attuma in this series not Attuma?

@WYLEEJAY: If this show is a tie-in to the MCU, then probably the explanation for that is the case for this show in that the Avengers disbanded after taking down Loki and the Chitauri, so that each member could have their own adventures until another threat to the world that an individual hero couldn't take down arose.

Oh.....then I suppose my favorite episode of this series is when Dr. Doom goes back in time to prevent the origins of the Avengers, all but Thor. Cool alternate takes on some of the characters.

Generally, watchable. However, if I see anymore Hulk vs. Hawkeye or Thor for food, I will regurgitate and stop watching.

I understand insinuating lighter moments, the same schtick over and over that wasn't funny the first time is making my eyes bleed.

Are you kidding me???8/10??? wait are we evening seeing the same cartoon? This by far is the worse avengers cartoon. Not comparing it to anything from the 90's, which was equally bad.

The Avengers: E.M.H was far superior in everyway. story, plot line, the tension, the seriousness, even the comedy was good.

Here you don't even get that. The Hulk never turns to Bruce Banner, it's always jokey. None of the characters come off as real. We don't find out about Widow, Hawkeye, hulk, C.A., Falcon ( expect that stupid episode with his mother, that was the lamest cherry on the top episode) And Thor comes off as a knuckle head. No sense of nobility.

It's all so card board cut out. Sorry dude, your comment just makes me not trust anything you say here. Does your love for the Avengers so absolute, that you'll even accept this substandard dreck? It's like getting a steak, that's burnt. You love steak, but not at the cost of this crap.
