FANFIC: Avatar - The Benders' Rebellion

Ever since Avatar came on TV, I was instantly hooked and followed the story like a Star Trek nerd. I was disappointed to see the series end but I was NOT disappointed by the action packed finale. They wrapped it up fairly nicely but I thought there could be more to the Avatar's adventures so here's a story line I wrote to continue the series. This is...The Benders' Rebellion.

It's been a few years after the coronation of Prince Zuko to Firelord. The world has become stable once again with all the nations minding their boundaries but alas, a new conflict is arising. There have been incidences of gangs of benders tormenting and bullying non-benders. The non-benders, which are greater in numbers, being making strict laws that limit the use of bending out of fear of being overrun. The idea of a schism within the nations between benders and non-benders that people are beginning to take sides. Benders see non-benders as weak, pathetic beings while they are gifted and special. Non-benders begin seeing benders as freaks and menaces to society. Riots break out across the three nations (three because the air nation is no more) and the Avatar is constantly having to step in and settle the disputes. This has deeply divided the world's population.

The most notable division being between Sokka and Katara. Sokka has now become the head of the Southern Water Tribe's warriors and is greatly respected as a great non-bending warrior. He begins to sympathize with non-benders as he is able to see how they can be afraid and think that the benders are too proud for their own good. Katara (who is now in a deep relationship with Aang) is trying to stay out of it but being the great healer that she is, she is visited by many of those that have caught up in the coflict and is disappointed in Sokka. Toph sympathizes with the benders as she believes they are special and are born with their powers and therefore should use them as they please without non-benders telling them what to do. The Avatar is caught in the middle and is trying to seek a way to settle the dispute.

There is a sub-plot to this season in which, Firelord Zuko is searching for his mother and leaves a cowardly, Neville Chamberlain-like bureaucrat in charge of the Fire Nation's day-to-day activities who wishes for nothing more than to avoid conflict and stays out of the whole situation. Also, there may be a few appearances by the Order of the White Lotus (which is comprised of both benders and non-benders) who try to help settle the conflict. Ultimately, both sides are organizing and preparing for a kind of massive civil war between the benders and non-benders. We see the season unfold through the eyes of Toph (no pun intended), who has become the leader of the benders, Sokka, who has become the leader of the non-benders, and Katara and Aang who are trying to peacefully settle the conflict. Avatar Aang is trying desperately to resolve the situation before it tears the world apart. This season will be EPIC!...if they ever pick up this idea which I doubt they will but oh well.

Very good storyline, reminescent of the x-men political conflicts :) As a more mature and evolved story, it sounds very good. Unfortunitally, i won't be able to cast the characters deeply because they are all young and it would be placing actors just for the sake of filling the roles. Most of them would probably be unknowns and every single actor would have to go through an audition instead of letting their experience speak for itself. I'm very much into Michelle Tractenburg, she might be a cool Katara. Justin Chatwin might be a nice Sokka, Ryan Gosling could be Zuko, Mara Wilson could be Toph and as for Ang... how about Gabe Nevins? But that's about it for my choices. I don't like them since i hate casting young actors. If you have any in mind, be sure to bring them up for all our enjoyment :)

Yeah, I know what you mean. I wish I could play Sokka in the movie, he's just like me, hahaha and we look the same too (except for the hair) but oh well. If I did cast people for live action, I'd want them to look like the characters. Aang would have to be asian and Sokka and Katara would be maybe Hawaiian or some Pacific Island ethnicity.

I always wondered how Sokka felt about being the only one in the group who couldn't bend and thought if everyone in the world ever felt the same way so I wrote this story.

believable but it really does sound like x men. As for live action? If you ask me there's a bit too much special effects needed for it to work (and trying not to offend anyone) but there is no ethnic variety in the avatar world. That kind of bothers me...
