Watch me take a crack at casting another live action version of a popular anime series!

Well, it's been a while since my last contribution here, so I decided to come back with a new fancast.

So, it's been reported that an American remake of the Death Note movie, based on the excellent manga/anime series, will be made. While I'm not a big fan of remakes, Death Note is a great story, and if done well in the right hands, would be amazing on the big screen. The Japanese version of the movie was great, and had some noteworthy performances (my favorite being Kenichi Matsuyama as L), but this cast will have largely American actors (or actors well known in Hollywood), most of whom would be unknowns/around the B-list. I'm also going to try and cast as many important characters as I can, so if I missed any, remind me. This is also going to focus on the first half of the series, so expect the next part and the rest of the cast to come soon.

So without further ado, here's the American Death Note cast!

Main Characters

Light Yagami/Kira: Aaron Johnson. Like hell I'm going to cast the overrated Zac Efron as the main character of this! Light needs a talented actor, one who can pull off being both normal (for a teen genius) and scary as well, so I decided to take a little risk and go with Kick-Ass himself. And the youthful Johnson definitely has a good future as an actor ahead of him.

L: Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He seems to be a fan favorite (judging from other fan casts I've seen on YouTube) and not only that, JGL is an amazing actor who's perfect at playing quirky, but strong characters. Plus whoever is cast as L has to be able to play off well with whoever plays Light, and I can definitely see Johnson and Levitt be great partners in acting.

Misa Amane: Brittany Robertson. Again, I'm not going to cast some teenybopper star (*cough*Hillary Duff*cough*) for Misa. Misa needs to be both cute but also creepy at the same time. I'd like to see Robertson stretch her talents this way, plus she's a perfect fit looks and height wise.

Ryuk: Ron Perlman. Come on, wouldn't he just be perfect with that hard, gravelly voice of his?

Rem: Helena Bonham Carter. I had a hard time with this, until I remembered Helena Bonham Carter's great voice and her ability to play dark roles like this. Plus, she can also exude that caring quality (given Rem's protectiveness towards Misa). She'd totally own a Death God role, would she not?

Kira Investigation Team

Soichiro Yagami: Gary Oldman

Touta Matsuda: Jim Sturgess. Keep in mind, Matsuda was the young, inexperienced, but brave and well-meaning cop. Sturgess has both the youth and the sort of "nice guy you want to root for" thing going on for him.

Shuichi Aizawa: Giovanni Ribisi

Other Important Characters

Ray Penber: Yuu Shirota. I decided to try going with a half-Japanese/half-Caucasian actor for Ray. And Shirota is good at playing the romantic kind of role (his character is a caring man about to be married to his longtime girlfriend), and with a mix of tragedy put in, could make for a compelling performance.

Naomi Misora: Michelle Ryan. Ryan has proven her own tough girl chops in Bionic Woman, and it helps that she looks just like Naomi too.

Watari/Quillish Wammy: Michael Caine

Sachiko Yagami: Dana Delany. Yeah, I'm not totally certain of this. But Delany is the right age to play a mother to a pair of teens (one of whom becomes a college student later), and she's not a huge movie kind of actress (mostly being on TV shows). I'm open to other suggestions though.

Sayu Yagami: Sarah Bolger

Wedy: Anna Torv

Aiber: Josh Holloway

Stay tuned for the next part of the cast, coming in a few days!

Wow, great to see you doing fan casts again.

Okay, some of your choices are a little off. You have Caucasian actors/actresses playing characters with Asian names. Other than that, you scored with Aiber, Rem, Ryuk, Watari/Quillish Wammy, and Wedi.

@ RoadDog: Well, the only reason I have the Japanese names there is because that's all there is. And keep in mind, this is an American remake, so Caucasian actors are inevitably going to be used (and the names would likely be changed too if this ever does get filmed).

@ TheSoulEater: Thanks, but JGL, as youthful as he looks, is too old for Light (who starts off as a high school student).

@ pig: Thanks!

i love all of them except for light.... sry, i like aaron johnson, but light is suppposed to have this innocent but at the same time this somewhat menacing, devious look to him that is suddle to pick up. aaron definitely has that innocent look though but he doesnt really have the other. i cant think of anybody though...... lol

I like the cast, but my main problem is that it takes place in Japan, so...why not cast japanese actors? I mean, for L it's just fine, because L is actually part French, part Russian, part Japanese, and part well...something else...

@ joob234: Well, I think Johnson, if given the chance, can stretch his talents out to be more intimidating.

@ contrast: Well, it's an American remake. Therefore, it would likely be set in America, and thus, have Caucasian actors. Furthermore, Japan already made their own live action DN movie (with all Japanese actors, even when some characters were not in the original story) which was a good film on its own merits.

Nice cast. :)
JGL I had never thought of before but would make an excellent choice. For Light my pick would have to be Thomas Dekker from "Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles," "Heroes," and the Nightmare on Elm Street remake. To me, he looks like him and would give a pretty good performance if directed very well.

I agree...this is really good
Zac Efron does not deserve to be near anything cbm/manga relayed...

I'm aware there's already a Japanese Death Note film (and a sequel, which I liked better than part 1, and a movie that focuses on the last days of L's life)...and I don't disagree that the American remake will most likely feature Caucasian actors. I'm not the kind of person who thinks that all manga/anime adaptations should feature only asian actors, but Death Note, to me, is really Japan-centric. It would be like if the upcoming Thor film was set in Avalon, not Asgard, because the director is Irish, not Finnish (or is it Danish...)

I think it's a good cast, and it's the cast I'd want if we must have the story line transferred to America, but I'd prefer it to stay in Japan...

I actually really enjoyed the Death Note movies that were released and kind of shudder at the thought of an "American" version. For an American version, I think the casting is pretty solid. I just really don't any desire to see an American version. Kind of like Akira. Do it the way it should be and don't Americanize it.

That's a great cast but Aaron Johnson is way too old to play Light sine I think he's twenty three now in 2012 (though I know this is a old article since they're all from 2010), I suggest Josh Hutcherson he's great with acting kind and nicebut act like a psycho at the same time (see Cirque Du Freak and The Hunger Games to prove my point!) Also you forgot two of the most important characters NEAR and MELLO! Because *spoiler alert* L dies in episode 26ish (or 25 I don't remeber exactly wihich one) and he has two 'sucessors' to finish the Kira case. I reccomend Asa Butterfield as Near, he's seems very serious in his roles and I can see him playing emotionless and calculating Near especially since he's in Ender's Game where he plays a character that reminded me of Near, though he's a couple years younger then Near after the time skip (Hear is sixteen or seventeenish I believe and Butterfield is fifteen) but he looks younger so it make sense to cast someone younger as Near. As for Mello I like Alexander Ludwig (and yes I am a Hunger Games fan if you didn't notice already!) he prove himself as Mello-worthy with he brutal performance as Cato in The Hunger Games and seeing Asa and him in interviews they complete oppisites which is just like Near and Mello.

I'm actually fine with this remake because either though the Japanese film were good they weren't th faithful to the manga...so this is actually a good way to be more faithful to the orginal source material...
