MrDonut Presents: 'Men in Black'

A fan cast for a reboot of the Men in Black series

It’s been a while since I last did a cast, but hey ho! I feel that familiar itch again! So, Men in Black? Might seem like a bit of a strange fan cast, given that there isn’t much love for this series anymore, but quite frankly, if ever there was series in need/deserving a reboot, its this series. Whilst I enjoyed the Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith films, I enjoyed the premise more so than the films themselves; as a result, with this cast that I’ve put together, I’ve gone for something a little different in mind than what has come before.

Men in Black: The Animated Series, is my influence here- personally speaking, I much preferred it to the actual films and hope if ever this series is to get the reboot treatment that is what is followed through with rather than the films from before. As a result, I personally would like a bit of a shift in tone; rather than the more silly/comedic tone of the last series, I think Men in Black would be served better tonally if it was more so a cross between the first Iron Man and the first Hellboy film- a little serious and a little silly; perfect balance for something like this, but enough is enough, on to the cast!

___________________________

Jon Favreau as the Director

I don’t usually cast directors but hell, given this is technically a reboot cast, I figured why not? So, Favreau? Well, quite frankly he’s a really underrated talent who has a niche with fanboys- even doing a pretty good job when he cocks things up. Quite frankly, with his work in Iron Man, I’d say he’s the perfect choice to rejuvenate this series and reintroduce the MIB in a new and interesting way.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _

Mark Valley as Agent K

Valley is another really underrated talent, whilst he undoubtedly lacks the presence that Tommy Lee Jones brings, he still has proven himself to be a fully dimensional, charismatic, tough, gritty, badass and authoritative actor with his work in things like Fringe and Human Target. Put simply, if cast I’d think he’d nail the role and definitely bring an enigmatic kind of ‘seasoned operative’ vibe to the role.

Daman Wayans Jr as Agent J

What can I say? Daman is a Wayans, and he’s [frick]ing hilarious. A very charismatic, funny and generally just amusing actor, who I personally think could steal the show like Will Smith before him- just watch him in Happy Endings, The Other Guys and New Girl; he just knows how to play it cool and can also do straight up silly, always bringing on the laughs.

Alec Baldwin as Agent Z

Baldwin would be a perfect replacement for Rip Torn; he can do intense, badass, funny, serious and even scary and could bring some serious range to the role- his work in The Departed and 30 Rock alone is a clear indication of what he could do here.

Eliza Coupe as Agent L

Now I’ll admit, I cast Coupe mainly due to her chemistry with Wayans as seen in Happy Endings, but she fits the role pretty well, plus she’s hot and looks the part… So, not much else needs to be said I guess…

Danny DeVito as Frank the Pug

DeVito is hilarious and has the perfect voice for this role, there really is no other way to put it. Hell, by all rights, Frank is more or less a classic Danny DeVito character; a ‘tough’ short guy who’s a little bit temperamental and the butt of most joke, so, if the glove fits… Why not?

John DiMaggio as the Worms

DiMaggio is nothing short of being one of the best voice actors around, it’s really that simple. He’s got great range and even greater talent, and realistically speaking, he always shines regardless of what role he’s cast in.

John Leguizamo as Jack Jeebs

Leguizamo fits this role perfectly, as seen strangely yet perfectly with his work primarily in the Ice Age series. He can do funny, stupid, serious and play slimy/annoying yet likable characters with ease, so quite frankly, I think he’d be a great addition to this cast.

Xander Berkley as Agent A

Berkley is another very, very underated actor who won me over a long time ago with his work in Nikita and The Booth at the End; I think he’d bring a great, dark and cerebral edge to the role and really just shine as the rogue MIB agent, and really just deliver with a very epic and memorable villain.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _

Note: Now, with the below castings, I’ll admit I’ve added them here just as they were pretty memorable in the past films, but obviously if ever they’re reintroduced, I’d expect them to be reworked to fit whatever story they’re present in, but despite that, I’ve included them just as despite their faults, the character ultimately remain MIB movie worthy villains.

Christopher  Meloni as Edgar the Bug

At first glance, Meloni might seem overqualified for a role like this, but like Vincent D’onofrio before him, he’s incredible versatile and surprisingly funny as seen in his work in Harold & Kumar Get the Munchies, so personally speaking, I think he’d nail the role and be able to bring a very dark appeal to the role too.

Eva Green as Serleena

Green might seem like another weird casting choice here, but when it gets down to basics, Serleena is basically a hot seductress; Green fits that bill well and has definitely got the right skill set to bring depth to the role too, so I’d be more than willing to see what she could do.

Kevin Durand as Boris the Animal

Durand is a very funny, very tough, and very talented badass beast of a man. Physically, he’s pretty much perfect, and with his work in films like Smoking Aces it’s clear he’s got what it takes to deliver on an insane, imposing and intimidating villain, so again, this is just one casting decision that ticks all the right boxes for me.

So, that’s my ideal cast for a Men in Black reboot. I hope you enjoyed checking it out, and if you did look out for anything else I drop!

Lol, I get the difference between a 'reboot' and a 'remake', but the same characters can still be used in a different context; hence why I cast these characters with new actors- I'm not enough of a 'story guy' to have added an in depth synopsis for an entirely new trilogy of films; it's why I mentioned I'd prefer the old animated series to be the basis of inspiration for a reboot instead of the old films as that had plenty of usable stories the films never touched upon.

Wow, glad that some of our prestigious casters are making a deserved return and clearing out the cornball Fan Fic articles appearing!

- Not sure if I see Mark Valley filling in for Tommy Lee Jones after the latter did such an amazing job as K.
- Perfect Agent J! Damey deserves a better movie than Let's Be Cops. You should cast his co-star Nina Dobrev in a role too; don't let The Vampire Diaries sway you, she can be fun and talented.
- Alec Baldwin taking over one of his 30 Rock co-star's roles in Men in Black would be amazing!
- I rarely watched the animated series. What did Agent L do?
- Danny DeVito has Frank's ideal gruff voice!
- Good choice for the Worms and Jeebs!
- I think you mean Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, though you're probably from a country where it's called the other title. But yeah, I agree why Meloni would make a great Edgar!
- I'd love to see Eva Green get a strong comedic role in something like this!
- I think Jermaine Clement did fine as Boris. And I never saw the character as a giant.

@MrDonut

- As far as your Men in Black reboot fan cast, for Agent K, as for who could replace Tommy Lee Jones as Agent K? Mark Valley is a good choice but not who I would have gone with but as for who I would have gone with as Agent K, I would have went with Jeff Bridges as Agent K as an older K in the mold of Tommy Lee Jones, Jeff Bridges would be an interesting Agent K but if you want to go younger then Josh Brolin was perfect as a younger version of Agent K in MIB 3 and should return as Agent K if they reboot, if not Bridges or Brolin then I would go with Kevin Spacey then

- Perfect Agent J, Damon Wayans, Jr. is a perfect casting choice for Agent J and considering he has the acting bug in his blood, his father being Damon Wayans Sr. and his uncles being Keenan Ivory, Marlon and Shawn Wayans and him following in their footsteps he has proven that he is a capable actor and star in his own right and if anyone could replace Will Smith as Agent J then it is definitely Damon Wayans Jr.

- Alec Baldwin as Agent Z, is actually an inspired choice so you get no argument from me there

- As Agent L I would go with Yvonne Strahovski in the role if not her then definitely Eliza Cuthbert not that your choice of Eliza Coupe is not a bad choice

- Danny Devito as Frank, perfect casting choice especially with the voice

- As Worms and Jeebs definitely agree with your choices that's for sure

- Christopher Meloni as Edgar, another perfect casting choice

- As Agent A, I would go with Mel Gibson in the role and why I say that? Even though it is completely out of left field, Mel Gibson does make a convincing and menacing villain especially if you have seen The Expendables 3 yet? And this would be a different kind of role for Gibson and not to mention he can act as well especially if you have seen any one of his movies

- Eva Green as Serleena, I definitely agree with this casting choice for sure, she's hot

- But Kevin Durand as Boris the Animal, I definitely agree

You should try your hand at DC Comics fan casts like Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Flash, etc. or even a Guardians of the Galaxy fan cast or even a Doctor Strange, Luke Cage or even Iron Fist fan cast

Or a Star Wars or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan cast, but those are just ideas for you for future fan casts

I liked the old cartoon, and I like that you used it as your basis! Mark Valley would be like the Joe Friday to Wayans' Bill Gannon.

Oh all the Wayons bros, Damon is definitely my favorite. And his son is also showing to be quite a talent.

I also like Baldwin as Zed.

Mr. Donut, I missed your fan casts. They were always spot on, and that includes this one. Great to see you back man! I especially love Berkeley and Valley.

I like the fancast but I don't want MiB to be over yet. I think Will and Tommy Lee have one in the tank left.

@ RoadDogXXIV
Lol, thanks bud.
- Replacing Jones is tough, and short of Brolin, very few actors come to mind, but think Valley can bring some life to the role, and apply a similar kind of appeal to the role too.
- Thanks- would like to see Dobrev in more, but not quite sure who she'd work as here...
- Glad you approve.
- Agent L was like a sarcastic/snarky smart character- basically, the 'tough/smart independant woman in a man's world', and had a bit of a flirtatous relationship with J- so, Coupe fit that bill for me.
- Glad you like those choices; really just fit for me.
- Yh, we don't have White Castle in Britain, so I'm assuming that's why it was called 'Get the Munchies' lol, but glad you like that- was thinking some people might scratch their heads with that one lol...
- Tbh, whilst the film was kinda shitty, she kinda did 'comedic' in Dark Shadows, and did a pretty decent job, so I think she'd work it well here, just personally would prefer the character to be a little more serious.
- Gotta agree, Clement was one of the very few good things about Men in Black III, but I think I've gone for a bigger actor just cos of the whole 'alien biker look'- think of this casting choice, as my subliminal way of casting Durrand as Lobo lol...

@ Shadow11
- Bridges is an interesting choice, but I wanted to go a little younger like the animated seriess- admittedly, as I mentioned up top, Brolin would own, but I wanted to go with a new cast, so avoided casting him.
- Glad everyone's loving Wayans in the role.
- Thanks, glad people are liking Baldwin too.
- Strahovski could work it defo, I just think she get's shoehorned into this kinda role too much, so didn't really consider him tbh.
- Glad you like those choices; felt I hit it out of the park with them lol.
- Gibson as A is pretty interesting... Never considered him, for it, but defo interesting...

Still, thanks for checking the cast; really appreciate the praise/feedback. I did my DC and Marvel casts before, so don't really plan on touching on them again anytime soon, but admit, have got the idea for a Green Lantern reboot in mind, so may eventually consider doing that, but my next couple of casts (if I get around to doing them) will probably be film reboots and video game casts, so keep an eye out!

@ FlixMentallo21
Glad you like what I was going for.

@ MCott
Thanks for the praise.

@ TheWorldsFinest
Thanks man, appreciate the praise and the feeback really means a lot lol- been a bit busy with new job so can't guarantee how often I'll be dropping casts, but defo plan to drop a few more down the line, so keep an eye out!

@ CookieKid247
I hope to see Will and Tommy get a proper send of with MIB, but 3 left a fairly sour taste in my mouth, and just seemed more like a TV episode than an actual film to me, so was a bit weird for me... Given how quiet talk is around the series, it doesn't seem like they'll get another shot at the character, so if that's the case, I'd like this cast if not something similar to get a chance to rejuvenate the series.

I really like it!!! I feel like you cast people that could definitely live up to the actors that portrayed the characters before. I personally would want Brandon T. Jackson to play Agent J, butI'd still love it if Damon Wayans Jr. did it.
MrDonut
MrDonut - 8/16/2014, 4:26 AM
Thanks dude, digging the feedback! Considered Jackson, but I'm more a Wayans fan, and was looking to cast him somewhere, so figured why not here? I mean, if the shoe fits... Why not? ;)

Optimist18 - 8/16/2014, 5:10 PM
I can dig it. I only vaguely remember the cartoon, but it appears it better suited the concept. As for the idea of a reboot in general, it'd be welcome. "MIB 3" wasn't bad by any means, but it didn't blow me away either. The end with young K and little J was the major highlight.

BTW, thank for the comments on my "Power Rangers" article. ;)

Thanks bud- agree with you there, but the whole film in general was just 'so so' lol... No worries, though, hope to see more of your work lol ;)

Too true. And thanks. (PS, if you're a fan of Godzilla at all, you might be interested in my "Destroy All Monsters" stuff in the fanfic section) ;)

Interesting cast but most of those villains from the Men in Black Trilogy does not need to be in the reboot. Maybe some villains from the Men in Black cartoon could work.

@ Optimist18
Sorry about the late reply, but whilst I'm not too familiar with Gozilla lore, I'll give that a look ;)

@ MightyZeus
Thanks for the ocmments; defo get what your saying and would defo like it to be more cartoon orientated, but sadly I can't remember many characters from the cartoon short of the really memorable ones like Alpha... But hell... He was a bit of a 'long running' villain, so it makes sense lol...

I can definitely get behind this! I love Mark Valley and Damon Wayabs in the title roles, and I'm glad that you've given John Tutorro a role where je still has his dignity interacted (I'm looking at you, Transformers films).

Anyway, sorry if I haven't posted anything in the meantime, but I'll try to get my Batman cast up soon.
MrDonut
MrDonut - 9/5/2014, 6:06 PM
Thanks dude, glad you dug it- think you got confused between Tutorro and Leguizamo though; I cast the latter here, but looking back now, Tutorro would also be pretty great here...

Still, drop a cast man! Fan fic has been a little sparse as of late, could do with some old faces showing up ;)
