Similar Superheroes in Separate Universes

The Marvel v. DC competition has been going on for years, and many comparisons between each company's superheroes have been made. Here we take a look at superheroes from DC and Marvel that have similar superpowers...

Marvel and DC have created so many different superheroes, respectively, that it would have been almost impossible for similarities between some of their superheroes to not exist. The question then becomes, did one company copy the other, or are some similarities there by chance? This will not be an exhaustive list by any means, and it will not include superheroes that solely have a superpower that is so common that there are many superheroes with it (eg, super-strength).

Supergirl vs. Rogue - Not everything is identical between these superheroines, but a fight between the two would be very close. Supergirl has laser vision and speed, while Rogue can steal powers from another person. So maybe the winner would be whoever could use their exclusive power(s) first. Supergirl definitely came before Rogue, so we have to give a strike to Marvel for being about 20 years late on this combination of superpowers.

Banshee vs. Black Canary - Both characters have a notable "sonic cry" that can damage enemies' hearing, and Banshee's can move physical objects. Banshee is probably the cooler of the two, since he can also fly, but Black Canary is more well-known (especially because of her appearance in the show Smallville) and has an appearance in comics 20 years earlier than Banshee. Once again, DC has Marvel beat.

Dr. Fate vs. Spider-Man - Wait a minute -- what do these two have in common? OK, so it's a minor component of each of their arsenal of superpowers, but they both have precognition. Spider-Man's is much less specific, only alerting him to danger. But Dr. Fate's is much more thorough and much further into the future than Spider-Man's. DC: 3; Marvel: 0.

Kitty Pryde vs. Martian Manhunter - A fight between the two wouldn't be a competition, but it's still an interesting comparison. Martian Manhunter has so many superpowers that it's hard to keep track of them, while Kitty only has the power that the two hold in common: the ability to go through solid matter. And yet Kitty still retains a somewhat prominent place on the world's most well-known superhero team. Kudos to Marvel for making her a key character despite a relatively late appearance (1980), but it's the DC representative in this comparison that's been around longer.

Iceman vs. Mr. Freeze - There are many characters in the superheroes universe with the ability to manipulate ice, but these are the most well-known in Marvel and DC, respectively. Bottom line: Iceman can go without having an ice-gun and ice-suit. Iceman wins, preventing a shut-out by DC.

Even though I myself am more of a Marvel fan than DC, in most of these comparisons it's the DC superhero with the advantage. Feel free to comment on other comparisons that aren't included in this article.

Green Lantern Corps and Nova Corps is the big one really... and the release of Green Lantern movie probably means we wont ever see Richard Rider and the Nova Corps atleast not for a long while anyway

Yeah I agree with Paulley.
Only Two out of the five were simalir Mr freeze and Iceman as well as Black canary and Banshee. You should've had ones like, DC'S Captain Marvel and Marvel's Thor, as well as ant-man and the atom, dr fate and doctor strange, Zatanna and Scarlet Witch, Elongated man and Mister Fantastic, Doom Patrol and X-men, Justice Leauge and Avengers, Clayface and Sand Man, Namor the submariner and Aquaman, Black cat and Catwoman, Mister Fear and Scarecrow. A lot of those were way more simalir than just by superpowers like the atom and Ant-man were both scientists.
Oh and Black canary knows Martial Arts.

i woulda gone with the following:
Doc Fate vs Doc Strange (both masters of mysticism)
Vision vs Martian Manhunter (both have extremely similar abilities)
Nova vs Green Lantern (both are members of intergalactic peace keeping corps.)
Elastic Man vs Mister Fantastic (need i explain?)
The Sentry vs Superman (both were considered for a time the big guns of both universes)
Hulk vs Doomsday
Nick Fury vs Amanda Waller
Moon Knight vs Batman (which has the more damaged psyche?)
Ultron vs Braniac
Quicksilver vs the Flash

there are practically DOZENS that both Marvel and DC have cultivated over the years and each one, while similar in powers, are radically different in personalities and storylines. these characters, no matter when introduced, are endearing and long lasting.
i would call it a tie between the mega comic giants that are Marvel and DC.

@Hamm3r
MM may have that shapeshifting thign goin for him, but Vision has a hologram that can be just as realistic as any form MM can take.
not to mention that since Vision is an android, his mind cannot neccessarily be read as easily as someone else's.

i was just going with the Wall off the top of my head. they're both heads of clandestine paramilatary organizations. and they have both done unspeakable things for the cause of the world's security.

Maybe a bit obvious BUT

Aquaman vs. Submariner

@Hamm3r
but Batman rarely goes into a fight without thinking of every possible weakness that he could exploit. that echolocation can seriously Bat-fire.
(pun intended)

here's a tough one:
Wonder Woman vs Ms. Marvel!
who would win that one?

@wadey09 and Hamm3rtym3: Batman has that bat attracter thing (as seen in Batman Begins and Batman: Year One) and the bats ecolocation can give DD false signals. Also Batman has knock out gas and has more weapons and tools at his disposal and is the better martial artist because he has been trained by more people and knows more forms of martial arts while if I remember correctly DD was only trained by one person.
Wadey09
Wadey09 - 10/25/2010, 7:10 PM
@Golden
in actuality, DD was trained by two people:
Stick and himself.
before Murdock met Stick, he, like Spidey, created his own unique form of martial arts that is highly reactive to his senses of hearing and touch.
Stick taught him formal martial arts which DD incorporated into his style.
Batman may have had more teachers, but that doesn't mean that DD can't teach Bats a thing or two.

None of those are decent comparisons. Sorry, you're stretching. And the ones that are similar slugged it out in DC vs. Marvel.

agree with you on WW vs Ms. Marvel.
now about Red Hood vs Winter Soldier:
i would have to go with Winter Soldier.
no offense to Todd, but he lets his emotions get in the way far too often. Bucky is military through and through. he knows how to be cool and calculating in the heat of battle.
not to mention that WS has that handy bionic arm and he has far more combat experience.
