To Spoil or Not to Spoil? That is the question...

It's been an ongoing issue for as long as I can remember. SPOILERS! Should CBM plaster them all over the main page or should they be more subtle? Read on for an objective view of the issue at hand.

SPOILER ALERT!

The above mentioned words churn up a tumultuous battle within us that rages on until we come to finite decision regarding the question at hand... DO I CLICK ON THE ARTICLE OR DON'T I? These words serve as both warning and temptation. They warn us of the impending information and the consequences of knowing it. They also tempt us because, let's face it, we're noisy and have got to know what lies ahead. For the longest time, these words have raised questions and started conflicts. I'm going to discuss a few of the things I have seen mentioned in comments sections.

______________________________

1. Should spoilers be allowed on the main page?

First off, the site owner/administrators have almost complete control over what makes the main page... and rightfully so. They run this site that many of us call 'home'. That being said, some feel that spoilers should be handled with discretion. While I myself don't mind the odd spoiler, I can see where these people are coming from. However, the fact still remains, the site owner has every right to post whatever he wants on the main page, spoilers included. It is HIS website.

2. Should pictures that could be considered spoilers be posted on the main page?

This one get's people really agitated. It's one thing to read about a spoiler, it's another thing entirely to see what's been spoiled. Again, I stand neutral on this issue because I enjoy a good spoiler, but it's easy to understand why some would get very upset over it. The fact still remains that the site owner has the right to do whatever he so wishes with any photo/video in his possession... even if that means plastering it all over the main page.

3. But it's so easy to simply put the words 'SPOILER ALERT' in the title of an article. Why don't they just do that for any articles that contain spoilers?

To be honest, most of the time the words 'SPOILER ALERT' are featured in bright bold red lettering in the headline of any article containing spoilers. There are very few times that I am aware of that this was not the case. It's worth noting that there is really no rule governing spoilers, so the warnings are a courtesy on the part of the writer of the article. Those that give us this courtesy should be thanked for their consideration. However, seeing as there is no set rule governing the issue of spoilers, we really have no right to condemn those that don't give us warnings.

I was always told, never raise an issue if you don't have a possible solution. This is simply a suggestion as to a probable solution to this problem. I admit that I have no idea how much effort or time would be involved in implementing this solution. Here goes...

I propose that a 'spoilers' section be created for CBM.
With a SPOILER section, the onus is off the owner of the site for any spoiled information. The responsibility will be strictly upon the user. If you click on it, it's your fault. This eliminates the constant argument over what should be done regarding spoilers.

That's my two cents on the issue.
If you have anything to add, leave it the comments section.
Thanks for reading!

Great article, it's a good topic to pick (pun intended)

There is already a solution, and you have mentionned it. The "spoiler" tag on news containing spoilers. No need to divide the news further with a "News" section, a "User picks" section and a "spoiler" section. As long as the inscription "Spoiler" is written in bright red like it is right now, it is your own fault if you click on it and get spoiled.

And in the long run, is it really that bad if you unwillingly read a little spoiler once in a while ? They're movies, folks, it's not real life. It's superficial.

@OrgasmicPotatoe -
first off, love the name... and you are right, I think that the red tags are enough. However, we still seem to hear a lot about it, so I thought I'd throw another idea out there.

Can't blame you for wanting to share your creativity. It's true, we read a couple people one in a while complaining about spoilers. I don't think people should complain about spoilers here and there, but who am I to tell others what they should do ?

All kidding aside, I agree with OP and Soto, It's your choice to look at spoilers, so don't complain when you're spoiled.

LMAO! I see what you did there... I agree with your comment as well. I've just noticed a lot of people complaining about this as of late, so I thought I'd try and offer a solution. Personally, I don't mind being spoiled.

Yea the spoiler tag helps, but sometimes, the spoilers are posted on the tops stories section right above the CBM Index. I mean the thing with the revolving photos that lead you to an article. For example, when The Dark Knight Rises was in theaters for about a week, there was a picture with the tagline, "JGL talks about playing Robin in TDKR". These spoilers aren't concealed and it really ruined the movie for me. Just because the film was out for a little while doesn't mean it is alright for spoilers to be shown to on the front page! A Spoilers section is a wonderful idea. We need this to make sure that we don't accidentally spoil the fun of the movie just by going on CBM! We need a spoilers section!

I think that's a fair statement. That's why I think a Spoilers Section would do away with this issue.

When there is an MMA event I dont visit MMA websites after the fights start. Why you ask? Because every one wants to see and discuss it.

If the owner of the site chooses not to do anything about it's his/her prerogative.

If they choose to add a spoiler tag for a main picture I hope its interesting.

@xandera- True point. If i really thought he was that bad, i would have put it bluntly, and found a different spot to hang online d;-). He got pretty fired up at people that were irritated with his latest WD pics, just poking fun with it.
Nice article by the way d;-). I like your idea! One problem with a "breaking news" site, is that the word "spoiler" is open to so much interpretation. There would no doubt be people screaming, "why wasn't this in the spoiler section!", at things such as a mere cast member addition. I think your on the right track with this one though. Also agreed with your point that the "spoiler" heads up attached to an article is a courtesy by the contributor, and give 'em a thanks d;-)

The only spoiler issue I ever had with this site is kind of my fault...but then again not really. I only recently started watching The Walking Dead and while I've made a lot of progress, I'm not fully caught up yet and only just started season 3. Then one day I come to this site and see a MAJOR spoiler recently (don't want to ironically spoil it for anyone else who hasn't caught up yet) and...it sucks. Maybe it's my fault for not being caught up, but you can't expect everyone to be. Heck, a lot of my friends only recently got into Lost. Just my 2 cents, but this would be a nice change.

Xandera
Xandera - 3/30/2013, 6:24 AM
@RobGrizzly & WhoIsAdamWe -
These are things that a spoiler section would eliminate. with a spoiler section, you wouldn't be exposed to that stuff unless you visited that particular section of the site.

I'm glad you wrote this article. I been coming here for awhile and that spoiler about walking dead really upset me. So I made an account to make a comment. I wasn't rude, I just pointed the reasons why it was wrong, which I won't get into. The guy running the site deleted my comment 10 mins later, and blocked my IP from accessing the web page! And looking at the article there is a ton of comments directly attacking him, all still there. The fact that he blocks IP addresses when people make simple criticisms is ridiculous.

While I appreciate your situation, I did not write this article to give people a chance to bad mouth the site owner. If you read the article, you know that I am not against him or his administration. I simply wanted to offer a possible solution to a seemingly growing issue. That being said, I am not going to delete your comment but I will ask you to use discretion when talking about the site owner.
Gotenks7
Gotenks7 - 3/30/2013, 8:18 AM
I understand and thank you. I didn't make the comment to bad mouth the site owner. It was just that I was so surprised at the action he took against me for pointing out many of the things pointing out in this article. I usually don't make many comments but thought adding to the discussion was encouraged, people shouldn't be afraid to comment because they may be blocked from accessing the web page.
