What in heaven's name are the producers of TDKR thinking????

Seriously- all these images coming from the set etc. It is a horriable idea. They are shooting themselves in the foot.I personally DON'T want to go watch this film now.

Editorial Opinion

The other night on twitter @BrianMBendis said "Anyone else feel they've already seen the new batman movie? Close the set!!!"

I couldn't agree more. I feel like I already watched the movie. Do you know why a majority of sets are 'closed'??? Espically as of late? Because of the potential of the fans blowing up how bad the film is before its released (ahem, Catwoman ring a bell?) or some papparazzi happens to fire off a picture of the most critical part of the film (in this case, a fight between Batman and Bane) or to keep the drama out of the public eye (remember Bale blowing up at the director of photography?)

It's one thing to show some behind the scenes photos (like the recent ones coming from the Cleveland Avengers set) that are approved, that won't give away the story line. However the stuff from TDKR has gotten both the fandom and mainstream speculating all over the place of what is going to happen.

In some ways that's a good thing- word of mouth is always a cheap marketing tool. But it could also backfire (again, the trashing of a film- the most recent example being Green Lantern).

One of the (many)reasons that The Dark Knight did so well for box office numbers was that not only did WB do a BRILLIANT viral marketing game, but also because the set was closed.

Now let me bring something into check- I actually watched them film the semi flip downtown in broad daylight on a Friday right before the close of a lot of offices inside the Loop. The security there was tight, I couldn't even TRY to do the "im talking on my phone but really taking pictures" move that I have done before. I saw security actually taking people's phones/cameras and deleating pictures. My co-workers and I actually went downtown to Lower Wacker after work one day to watch them film part of the chase sequence. So long as we were quiet and didn't try to take pictures etc, they let us watch.

The other bit is that Chicagoians have a healthy respect for the the "big boys" that come into town. They like to stand and watch whatever is going on- even more so when its something that involves explosions like the semi flip or when Michigan ave was destroyed for Trans 3.
Heck, I actually walked through the Powers set on my way home from work the other day. Everyone was standing around 6 corners in Wicker Park waiting on buses/trains and just watching them set up a picture car and dolly tracking. I didn't see a single person trying to take a picture of what was going on.

(Side note- I did get a glimpse of Deena. Holy Toledo, the actress and the production team practically ripped her out of my head).

Back to TDKR- There have been soooooooooo many pictures released from the set that even some of my mainstream friends are like... what's the point? I have seen everything, I know some point that Bane is going to do X to Batman. Why waste the 11 bucks to go watch it? (even more for 3d). That mentality is instant death to the box office.

Then there is the commentary on some of these pictures. Its not just us here, but when a "mainstream" news (like) picks it up...then its just worse. (TMZ has pictures also of the batwing thing).

Couple this with a down economy and the black market piracy issues, people wonder why box office numbers don't match up.

Don't get me wrong- even though I am a hardcore Marvel Zombie- I do want Batman, Superman etc to do well in sales- it makes the CBM market/genre keep going.

But hey, WB Executives--- take a page from Marvel and only leak certain approved pictures from the set. Hire some better security. Spend the money now so all of us fans are FORCED to spend our hard earn dollars to learn whats going to happen to Bruce next.

I think you are the first person I have EVER seen to say what I was thinking. Don't get me wrong, I like Nolan's take (and I adore him for putting Batman in Chicago where he belongs) but there has been just *something* missing.
Batman Begins? The Dark Knight? You and I know these stories well, but frankly I was disapointed that these were NO where near what the source material was. They just borrowed the title.

I already know your going to catch alot of shit for this but its your opinon. Yeah I wish there were not so many set pics being released. But at the same time who said you had to look at them. Not to mention the scenes we are seeing could be of just one particular scene. We dont know the complete magnitude of this film. Also you should not let set pics from letting you see a movie. At least wait for the full trailer. Nice article though.

Nolan brought everyone a darker batman. Helping everyone get rid of the taste that was Batman & Robin. People would be still complaining if Nolans Batman was never created because directors would be to scared that they would hire the next schumacher. Once TDKR is done, it may not be the best looking CBM. But it will be as it should be, a great film. Credit where credit is due.

Its not like the entire movie is being filmed from a phone. God sometimes I question the intelligence of many users on this site. Really I do. Its pre-production.

And so far, only fanboys complain about this movie not being 'faithful to the comics'. That is a very cliched term I see on this site. Seriously.

The mainstream audience could give a shit. They wanna see their favorite superhero in action, and Nolan is gonna give them just that.
sonofsamadams
sonofsamadams - 8/14/2011, 9:21 PM
and Nobody really cares about the vids being posted. Hell, WB will take em down eventually. But since there are so many takes in a film, then these 'pics' won't hurt the movie.

First off- I am NOT trashing Nolan. I actually like his take on Batman.

And im a producer- I actually KNOW what they are doing in those pics, what rigs are for, why they are using X camera etc etc etc

Here's my problem-I am NOT letting this pics get me into the mentality of "i don't want to go see this because i know what going" I am more in the mentality of "WTF? How bad of a train wreck is this going to be...just from a production standpoint".

My concern is really more in the Michael Bay mentality. There was a HUGE accident on the trans 3 set, and from the accounts that i have seen in the media and people that I knew where there, it happened because the producers/bay wanted to shave costs on the film budget and not put stunt people where they should have been. And now there is a woman who is comatose still, a year later.

There have been 2 accidents on TDKR set already. As a producer and vfx supervisor that worries me. Usually when there are grave accidents (in the case of trans 3) or multiples (in the case of TDKR) the film is not well either by story line standards or by box office numbers.

Yes, Exactly. Nolan is ruining Batman. He gave us one of the best origin movies you can have. And one of the best sequels you can have. And now since he has made 2 really good Batman movies, he is screwing us all over on the 3rd. Great editiorial, What movies have you produced and what special effects have you supervised. I am asking out of curiousity?, not as a a-hole.

I like Nolan's series, it's grounded yet dark, like many fan boys I have my issues with his series though; Ugly Rachel, lack of kicking in The Dark Knight, overly complex suit in The Dark Knight, etc.

But so far everything I've seen or heard about Rises has left me more or less neutral, so Bane isn't big enough, I always assumed Nolan would play him of as an equal to Batman, even the new Jet thing looks decent to me; fair enough its not amazingly impressive, but I'm reserving judgement.
It's just the cowl-less Catwoman and the day time shoots that's got me a bit worried; 1 - because I'm a fanboy (mainstream audiences probably wont give a shit) and 2 - because Batman is meant to be mysterious, hence he operates at night, etc, but logically speaking if serious shit was going on during the day, then Batman would obviously reveal himself, though from the whole mercenaries and everything, I just get this 'No Man's Land' vibe coming from Rises.

But forget that, went off into a ramble there, point is your spot on correct, Warner Bros. need to up the security on the set, fair enough we may not have seen everything, and obviously shit will look different in post production and all, but even so it seems almost as if they are deliberately leaking all this footage, something which is completely unnecessary and unfortunately harming the movie by deflecting a large vocal group who may have originally had high hopes for the movie.

End of the day, I dont think Rises will be a bad movie, but compared to Begins (my personal favourite so far) and The Dark Knight, I just think it wont be as good, especially with the high expectations people had/have set, but as a Batman and Nolan fan I'm trying to keep an open mind...

Wow dude, you're full of sh*t. Nolan knows what the F(rick) he's doin. Watch the D*mn movie before trash talking it. It's called misleading, we never know what will really happen until we see it. Nolan cares about his films and if you don't like the realistic take don't watch the d*mn movie! I hate how every day there is one of these articles trash talking Nolan. You see, I personally think that the Marvel movies are overrated...we just look at TDK more just so we can prove it's not perfect. We go to the movies to be entertained...not to pick it apart and complain. I think it would be funny as hell to see someone make a bunch of hate articles about Marvel. lol. But besides that intresting article...

@warrior- I was kinda thinking the same thing. There's no mistaking that Ledger's death had something to do with TDK doing well in theaters. I figured in order to have the same hype Nolan needed to do something drastic, and having an open set is part of it.

Depite the fact hat I'm not a fan of nolan or nolanverse I have to say that I know enough about the guy to say that you're seeing the tip of the iceberg moviewise.

There's A LOT that people are not seeing.

Secondly WB knows how to play comicbook fanboys now. By releasing all of this stuff without context, inematography, vfx, etc., they will get fanboys to do their usual b!ching and moaning, and get their expectations lowered. Then when they show the real stuff (which will look better even if it's fantasyless mediocrity), the fanboys will be saying it's the greatest thing ever and proclaiming nolan their lord and saviour.

They know how to play you.

Everyone needs to stop complaining about what they've seen so far. The movies not even finished yet and we have no clue what plot points are being played out in these scenes besides our own speculation. I'm not saying the movies gonna be great or amazing but just quit trash talking till you've seen it. Just look at all the movies Nolans directed in the past 10 years:

Inception(2010)
The Dark Knight(2008)
The Prestige(2006)
Batman Begins(2005)
Insomnia(2002)
Memento(2000)

All pretty good movies. He didn't disappoint us with TDK so lets give him the benefit of the doubt.
95
95 - 8/15/2011, 4:54 PM
Okay, first off @Xenix

When you say Burton, do you mean his style, his exaggerated Gothic architecture? Never liked Burton's films. As for being more faithful to the comics, I can't tell you fanboys to stop being so anal about changes but I can say this: these characters all represent something in society, Nolan took the core of that and presented in his own way as a writer has the liberty to do. Because all these character really are, are just Archetypes, just in unique packages [costume, name, and backstory]. With the selection of Pittsburgh to represent Gotham, TDKR will have more stone buildings, a scene involving a Goth style church and the inclusion of snow. Possibly Nolan have heard your complaints...

And now @murdocksgirl

You are very right, word of mouth is a cheap marketing tool. On the NolanFans forums I had read a quote by an exec at WB referring to TDKR's marketing getting out of control compared to TDK's. Therefore, I believe that this is their marketing. It makes us speculate [and make articles like this one] about it. Plus, what we are seeing are only outdoor action sequences, that of which we are most likely to see in the trailer anyway. Just several minutes of a possibly 150 minute movie with tons of dialogue scenes. And as for backfiring, it won't happen. The same people on this site who complain about the set shots are the same group of individuals who will come back on here to see the trailer which definitely will change their minds. Not to mention your beloved Marvel marketed The Avengers in IM2, Thor, and Cap so let's not complain about small stuff like this. But, shit, if you don't want to see it, fine, but when you see everyone praising it, it will be your lost. Nolan said he found the perfect thematic conclusion so I'm excited.

And you [frick]ing people wonder why the studios backed out of Comic Con.

You just ripped the thoughts out of my head, man. That is all I can say now. Not going to see it over set pics.....isn't really a great reason, But that is as you said there loss. And I do give Marvel respect as much as DC. They aren't as amazing as everyone says on here. They are just a Studio with a plan as of now, a very good plan as of now.

I am tired everyone worrying about this movie. Has Nolan ever let us down before? No, he hasn't. Why would he start now? Tom Hardy will own as Bane even if he isn't as big as we hoped he would (even though he will probably be enlarged somehow). The only thing I might worry about is Anne Hathaway as Catwoman because I never liked Catwoman as a character and I don't think Anne is a great actor she is just decent. Plus her costume is not the greatest hopefully it changes especially the goggles those just llok horrible. Other than that thiis movie will be fantastic and possibly the movie of the year.
murdocksgirl
murdocksgirl - 8/15/2011, 8:09 PM
I am going to apologize for the long post here, but I want to address everyone and not have duplicate postings (I have NO CLUE what I keep duplicating!)

First off, can you people read? I never ONCE trashed Nolan. I am a chick not a "dude" (i think my handle name and my avatar make that clear). I do believe that Nolan is getting producing credit, but this is NOT targeted at him. He's too busy directing, IMO, to have to worry about leaks. That is why these projects have like good 5 producers.

How can i make this anymore clear: I LIKE NOLAN. I LIKE HIS WORK ON BATMAN.

I am NOT trashing Nolan. I am NOT trashing TDKR, I am pointing out that the producers are doing a bad job of keeping their set secured. Do I like some of the casting? no. Do i like some of the costumes? No. Do I like the franchise, and will I go see this? Yes.

Yeesh.

@Justsomeawesomeguy
My day job involves me talking to people all over the country. Fans and not, and alot of times I will stumble across the person who doesn't get why they see X on TMZ and Y on the screen.

There is a huge difference between seeing something that is an approved leak (99% of the time, approved stuff has polished look to it) vs a papparrazi shooting off a good chunk of footage of a fight sequence. Actually alot of the stuff that has been leaked on the net I am pretty sure are people from the set/passerbys etc. That makes me wonder about the security on the set... and if you can't keep a secure set, guess what? You are going to have a leak like the whole Wolverine debacle.

Re: Accidents- yeah. Tell that to the chick that is still in a coma a year and half after she drove through a stunt sequence she shouldn't have been in for Trans 3.

@xblaze96x
I have 13 short films that I produced. 2 feature length documentaries I am working on. Out of those 12 shorts, I have have VFX Suped on 3, wrote 2 and directed 2. Oh, and I am also working on what I believe (based on my research) the first attempt at a life action/animated motion comic/short film :) ( I love mixing generes) That one I wrote/produced and im the Vfx super. Please see my above note, i am not trashing nolan.

@AHK thank you for actually reading what I was saying.

@TheShadow- please RE READ MY ARTICLE. Also re-read the beginning of this post. At no point am I trashing the movie.

@Warrior- you raise a good point. However, I doubt with the issues of Charlie Sheen etc, that WB would ask TMZ for help in a fake leak.

@StrangerX- another good point. I didn't want to bring up Heath, but since you did- i did point out the day he died that WB was going to pin their hopes on an Oscar win for him (yes, i believe Heath deserved it) and if you look at the marketing for that film, its more Joker than Batman. There was this subtext of "see Heath's last film" (which that wasn't his last film).

@Coldblood6- warner doesn't know what to do with their DC libary. I hate to say this, but the studio is running DC into the ground. There could be SOOOO much more done, even if its crappy, and they are focused just on the 2 characters that have made them money (and have been dealing in lawsuits) over the last 30 years. GL could have been much better, Wonder Woman should have been helmed by Wheadon like they had planned... i could go on and on.

And actually my org. posting was the tip of the iceburg. WB has been hip deep in lawsuits from the Superman estate, the nonsense with Watchman nearly never making it out of the cage, huge losses on GL and other films... They are starting to rush properties in order to keep the copyright etc instead of just dealing with these lawsuits. That makes for crap storytelling (hello-- Marvel did this too back in the day. Remember that Horrific FF movie?)

@Despero
Backfiring? Oh this stuff can. Early stuff shown before the finished product can ruin the release of a film. Wolverine Orgin box office numbers opening weekend could have been A LOT better if it wasn't for the pre-viz version that was leaked on the net. Look at what happened with Dark Knight. Ledger dies and instantly there is this rumor (and I am 99% sure it was started by WB) that Ledger OD on purpose because playing joker got to him... and that's just unethical whoever did start it.

But i also fall under the school of thought that "all publicity is good publicity". You are right, these leaks have spawned all this debate. However, I am not the only one who thinks their set needs to close down.

I am not saying you are trashing him. I was just asking what movies and stuff. And that is cool. But you said you aren't going to see the movie because of the set pics. But that is your and I judge you not. I actually agree with most of what you said. The barely closed sets are a bad idea. But what I think is that it is just 1 particular scene they are filming, there will be more then that in the movie. But I didn't not mean to offend you if I did. But this is still a good editorial. I give you a round of applause, because I can barely write anything on here. I still like this editorial. And if I sounded rude, I didn't mean too.

Great article, it's hysterical how mad people get when someone says something negative about Nolan or TDKR.

I think it's simple, TDK raised the bar so high that it was impossible to follow up (especially since the star of the movie died!).

And now after seeing Bane and Catwoman, it's just a major letdown. I honestly think Nolan is overrated but I never thought in a million years that I'd be this disappointed by what I've seen and read about this movie so far.

Hopefully the first trailer is awesome and makes me looks stupid (it happened with Cap and Thor), but I doubt it.
