Here is the official statement:

"Slowly but surely, Peter Jackson has managed to secure the return of the majority of the major stars from The Lord of the Rings franchise for his soon to be shooting prequel, based on J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit.

Sir. Christopher Lee had been in talks to reprise his role as the wizard Saruman and it now looks certain, providing that he is in good health, that he will be appearing in the movie."

Starring Martin Freeman, Hugo Weaving, and Andy Serkis (plus a whole load of other returning stars!) - The Hobbit, Part 1 shuffles into theaters 19th December 2012!

Wow - surprised at this one seeing as he threw a MAJOR strombo when he was edited out of the theatrical version of The Return of the King.

Someone must have put all his toys back in his pram. :oP

He wasnt. They are basically adding a bunch of stuff not in the book. I mean 2 parts for a 255 page book.

This is awesome given that Lee stated several years ago that if they did the Hobbit he would probably not travel to New Zealand due to his health. I'm so glad his coming back because no one could play that part but him.

As for the story...there will be elements of the White Council, The Necromancer storyline, Aragorn watching over the Shire per Gandalf's request, Gandalf searching for Gollum, etc. They will make a justified second film. The part I'm wondering about is will the first film encompass all of The Hobbit and the second be all "original" stuff or will they end the first film before the start of the Battle of the Five Armies at the end of the Hobbit? I guess we shall see.

Any idea what location that painting depicts? I don't think it matches the description of any of the Council's possible meeting places, but perhaps it's meant to be Rhosgobel (home of Radagast the Brown)?

@spiderneil
Christopher Lee is a HUGE Tolkien fan (he reads all the books once a year). He won't let petty squabbles get in the way of the films' best interests.

SWEET. Christopher Lee is a national treasure. He got shafted in Return of the King. I'd remember Sauroman from the Hobbit. Hope he gets plenty of screen time some how.

I looked up how old Mr Lee will be and it is 89 this year, so yeah he is getting on.

This is great news. I had al but lost hope that he would appear, given a statement he made early in production saying he was uncomfortable flying at his age.

Seriously can't wait for this movie.

honestly, I thought he had already died. Sorry Mr. Lee!

Has Peter Jackson even read "The Hobbit"? I wonder. After the great job he did on LOTR (except for the way the hobbits got their swords) I'm having a little difficulty getting motivated to see this movie.

Lee grew up with these books when they first came out and even met Tolkein, theres no way he would sit out on the Hobbit

lol @ Quasimodo.

It's going to be weird seeing him be a good guy in this lol. Cause you know, it's before he turns on his good friend, Gandalf the Grey. They will be friends again! ... or were then? .... lol.

This is some of the best news so far! I was really hoping we'd see Lee in the White Council. It just wouldn't feel right without him.
