Jason Momoa's Audition and Test Reel for Conan The Barbarian

Jason Momoa's Audition and Test Reel for Conan The Barbarian

MTV has this exclusive clip from the Blu-Ray release of Conan the Barbarian, that will be in stores tomorrow. Watch what Jason went through to get the role.

The director Marcus Nispel knew right away that he had the right guy for the role, but he had to convince the studio. So Nispel shelled out his own money to make a test reel of Jason Momoa slashing plants while wearing Conan-like garbs.

I recently saw the movie and I'll say this, Jason Momoa was an excellent choice for Conan, but the movie itself is terrible. The first half hour of the film with the young Conan and Ron Perlman was well done, but after that everything outside of Jason's performance is unremarkable. The secondary characters are poorly written, and poorly acted. Rose McGowan was painfully bad, and ruins the character that was very interesting in the first half hour, when played by the younger actress. The fantasy elements just seem completely out of place, and should of been cut in favor of a more reality based story.

Starring Jason Momoa, Ron Perlman, Rachel Nichols, Stephen Lang, and Rose McGowan, Conan the Barbarian is set to be released on DVD/Blu-Ray November 22nd!

It's a shame this movie turned out so underwhelming. I feel like had they just stuck to a Robert E. Howard story, things would have turned out so much better.

I just don't get the comments people make about not being true to source. This film was so much more true to what Hyboria and Conan should be than the prior films. The 80's films were decent movies, but they weren't even close to the source. At least this was somewhat accurate to who and what Conan and the world of Hyboria should be as penned by Howard. Yes, it fell short in some aspects, but it was still entertaining.

IN ALL HONESTY THE BEST CONAN WAS THE ORIGINAL MOVIES..

WHY? CAUSE IT WAS A BALANCE...TRAGEDY, VIOLENCE, HUMOR, MONSTERS AND SORCERY..PLUST THE MUSIC GOT YOU PUMPED. I MEAN WEIGH IN THE ORIGINS=LITTLE BOY WITH SLAIN PARENTS FORCED INTO BECOMING A WARRIOR OR KID WHO'S ALREADY A FIGHTER, A KILLER THAT COULDN;T SAVE HIS FATHER..I MEAN THEYRE BOTH TRAGIC BUT THE ORIGINAL'S STORY WAS WAY MORE TRAGIC, MORE EMOTIONAL. MAMOA HAS DEFINITE SWORD SKILL BUT THE STORY AND THE WAY THEY TACKLED IT.. 5 DOLLAR DVD WORTHY. MAMOA HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE AN AWESOME CONAN GIVEN THE RIGHT DIRECTOR AND RIGHT STORY REMINISCENT TO THE OLDSCHOOL CONAN..YOU DON'T CHANGE SOMETHING THAT WORKS.

LOL [frick]ing morons this movie "WAS" true to the source material. Jason Momoa's portrayal was closest to Robert Howard's Conan not Arnold. Arnold's Conan was nothing like Conan in the books.

@NAILBITER

I couldn't agree more with what you wrote in the article. MAMOA was awesome in this flick, NISPEL dropped the ball, plain & simple...where the fcuk did that "Girls Gone Wild" scene come from?!?

"You killed our masters, whatever shall we do?"

"Paaaaarrrttaaayyyy!"

Fcukin ridiculous.

I have to say that the movie was really good for what I was expect from Conan. Momoa could have used a few pounds more as we are used to the Arni portrayal, but still I find that this Conan is really what you see in the source material.

Arni movies are a classic, but they had a very light tone. Momoa's Conan is far more a wild savage.

I don't like action movies where "normal" characters leap large distances or things like this, I like it when they keep it "realistic". What I mean is that I'm ok if Conan would kill 1000 guys in a battlefield on his own, but not jumping from a window to the opposite building, so for me what it didn't really work was the bouncing sand-dudes, maybe if they would have regenerated and climb up the structure would have been cool. Maybe for a next movie we could have a villain that would be "less romantic/ more wicked".

But it was surely good fun to watch, the environments were large and epic, and really true to the comics.

I would be very happy for a sequel

I tell you everyone I talk to who did not like this movie said that "it wasn"t Conan" and when I ask them what are the basing that off of they will say it was the original movie with Arnold.

And when I ask them if they ever read the the Robert E Howards stories they all said no.

I really liked the movie. I thought it captured the essence of the character from Howard's stories.

In the stories Conan was a thief, pirate, mercenary and king. I think they showed a little of all that within the character. I would love to see a sequel.

And if you haven't read the Howard stories I highly suggest you do and once you do you forget the original movie and realize that this movie shows the definitive Conan the Barbarian.
