Conan starring Jason Momoa, Stephen Lang, Rachel Nichols, Ron Perlman and Rose McGowan has been filming in Bulgaria for some time now. Dimitar Nikolov had the opportunity to interview director Marcus Nispel recently for novinar.net.

Topics discussed ranged from working on location in Bulgaria to the differences between this and previous Conan films.

Here is a portion of the interview from novinar (keep in mind this interview is translated).....

Before you said that shooting "Conan" is the child you dream. How do you feel when you finally run his childhood dream?

When I was a kid, movies in cinemas came perhaps years after their premiere in America. I'm from Germany and there had to wait at least half a year or even over to see "Star Wars", "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" or "Conan." But we listened to the soundtrack, saw action heroes, knew about the movie and I thought before we saw them. So actually I created the movie in my head before I saw him. Now everyone asks me if I do a remake. I answer that really make this film as a child I imagined in my head. Shoot him in the way you imagined it then, but not the way it was.

Did you shoot in Bulgaria?

First, I heard that they will be shot in Bulgaria, I wanted to come and see the country. I understand that taking a picture of Bulgaria as New York or Los Angeles for "The Black Dahlia." In 'Conan' But here is super appropriate. Do not you need to build sets. Everything has it. We were in Varna in Pobiti stones. We were in the caves. And it's better than any special effects. Conan is an action hero, based on reality, he is on another planet and the Earth - just like Tarzan. So I did not want to paint or build something, once I find it real. Middle Ages are still living in Bulgaria, which is medieval history.

How will this Conan is different from previous films with the same name?

Well past have the same name - "Conan," but we will not make the same film again. We get back to the books of Robert E. Howard. These books have inspired hundreds of graphic novels, many video games and movie that was made before the disco era when special effects were important. We decided to make this "Conan" more real, less special effects through cascades. That's why everyone in the team understand martial arts. Even the actor who plays the little Conan.
I think this is something new - in this time when there are so many video games and special effects to make a film that is closer to the authentic experience.

Have experience in horror movies. You'll see an element of horror and "Conan"?

"Conan" is definitely a movie for adults. There is sex, violence and lot of action. He is a barbarian and everything will be great fun. But is not sadistic or horror movie with torture.

Nice find Hawks! I love the directors take on this!!! "We get back to the books of Robert E. Howard. These books have inspired hundreds of graphic novels, many video games and movie that was made before the disco era when special effects were important. We decided to make this "Conan" more real, less special effects through cascades. That's why everyone in the team understand martial arts. Even the actor who plays the little Conan." This guy really gets it!!!! I wasn't sure about this movie at first, but I'm officially interested!

Oh man, they look terrible!
Look at the puny arms on Momoa!

Man, and I wanted this movie to be good!
German director huh? He needs to try
and understand Howard's English writing! This
is not Conan! This guy directed Pathfinder
and it shows! He is no historian or any
kind of a good director!

I need some aspirin!
Good article, though, Hawks@!

I also like the direction they are taking. The Robert E. Howard Conan is what I grew up reading and those the stories and adventures I remember. Never read the graphic novels or comics. That's why I have no issue with Momoa as Conan.

That's not the best image of Momoa. being he is not looking serious and pumped up at the time, but the other photos have me plenty comfortable with how he looks for the part. At least, we see he has some scars across his shoulder. Wish they would have added a few to his face too.

To succeed:
1) It has to be grounded in the source material.
2) Mamoa has to be able to act.
3) The film its self has to have WAY better atmosphere than these crappy set photos.
4) The action has to be shot well.

Not familiar with Mamoa or Nispel's work so I can't assign a probability to these.

On another topic, what ever happendd to Solomon Kane? I wanna see that! Is it ever going to be released in
America?

I have to say I disagree with some of you who say this looks horrible. At first I had zero interest in this film but it seems to be shaping up into something pretty cool.

MassExecutions: I'm working on an article about Solomon Kane as we speak. I've been trying to run down information on that for a week now. No, it hasn't been released in the states but so far I can't find the definitive reason as to why.

It is going to be released on DVD and Blu Ray June 28th in the UK but again I can't find anything stating that it will or will not be released here at the same time.

As soon as I can get something to verify anything more than saying yes or no, I'll let you know.

I've wanted to see Solomon Kane since I first heard about it and it sort of just went away quietly.

I think the cast is fine and the fact that it'll be rated R is pretty sweet news!
Ranger14
Ranger14 - 6/16/2010, 9:24 AM
BmanHall@ Nope, he isn't kidding you, neither am I. Arnold looked nothing like Howard's Conan. The only thing Arnold had on film was the massive body-builder frame and Howard's Conan isn't depicted like that. If you were to look at the black and white illustrations in Howard's books, Momoa is as close to that Conan as you can get. Much closer than Arnold. Arnold, face-wise, looked nothing like Conan.

MassExecutions@ Momoa is a good actor. Much...much better than Arnold.

Momoa's fighting skills are going to make the Conan come to life much better on screen than Arnold. Arnold's scenes from past will look slow motion compared to what Momoa should accomplish.
DDD
DDD - 6/16/2010, 9:25 AM
Momoa looks like WARPATH from
X-FORCE here! Conan isn't Native
American! He's freakin's Irish!
WTF!

Is that eyeshadow he's wearing?

Loganoneil@, yup, Pantera wanna be!

Frazetta never read a Conan book
and that's why everybody now thinks
Conan is an Injun! I'm part Irish
and part Cherokee and that is just
offensive! Geez!

C'mon, DDD. I know you're a giant dude, but I wouldn't say his arms were puny. I think he looks okay.
DDD
DDD - 6/16/2010, 9:33 AM
I don't care if Momoa can fight with knives with
his feet and act as well as Robert Diniro he
just ain't Conan with that tall scrawny body and
scrawny arms! At least arnold looked the part in
his body and was impressive-looking!

I liked Momoa on Stargate Atlantis but he ain't no
kind of Conan and Nispel ain't no kind of director!
Ewe Bol is better than him! Just watch Pathfinder
clear through without laughing...I dare you!
Talontd
Talontd - 6/16/2010, 9:35 AM
C'mon....you guys are IDIOTS if your hating on that pic...

Momoa is OBVIOUSLY playing around with the girl in the pic and the person taking the photo..

@BmanHall

I completely agree with Denn1s, IF YOU HAD READ THE BOOKS you would know that Momoa is VERY close to the descriptions presented by HOWARD. Sure he doesn't look like Arnold, nor does he look like the Frazetta drawings, but thats not how CONAN is supposed to look anyway...

Again, my only concern is with the writing and with Nispel. He has a great eye (as you can somewhat tell from his statements above) he's just not a very good director. I am happy to hear about the R-Ratiing and it seems like he wants the action front & center, so that's all good news, let's just see if he can bring the cast together and coax out some correlating performances. We'll see...

MassExecutions - 6/16/2010, 9:40 AM
@Talontd - Well, DDD is right that Conan is a Proto-Celt, and Momoa is no Irishman, but then again, I'm not sure what a tan Irishman looks like. Maybe a lot different than a usual one.
DDD
DDD - 6/16/2010, 9:41 AM
Matches, Momoa's arms are puny for Conan!

I may be a giant but I can tell the difference
between sizes!

Conan was described by Howard as a huge man who
could hurl a horse and rider to the ground by
grabbing the horse from the front and wrestling
it to the ground! That's not Momoa! I'm sorry
but it isn't!

If Conan can move like a cat it's more like a
lion!!! John Buscema got him the best in the
Marvel comics! It wasn't just because John was
a comic book artist, he was a hell of an
illustrator. He drew Tarzan as slim and wiry-
muscled and drew Conan as huge, tall and
wide-muscled, just like Howard described him,
throwin' horses around!!

The director seems to have his head in the right place, but that doesn't always translate into a good movie.
ThaMessenger07
ThaMessenger07 - 6/16/2010, 9:45 AM
Conan was always ripped and buff but not Like Arnold They originally described him like his creator 6'2 210. Marvel depicts him as 6'6 265 which would still be smaller then a 6'2 250lbs Arnold

Here is Jason Mamoa in Action

DDD
DDD - 6/16/2010, 9:51 AM
Talntd@ you're right! He is not a very good director at all!

If this movie is any good at all it will be because Momoa
sold it! Like I said I like Momoa's acting,
he's actually a pretty effective action actor and
was totally believable as an asskicker on Stargate!

But I have absolutely no faith in this director, whatsoever!

I love Conan as a character and I want to see
him done faithfully is all! I don't expect much from this movie!
McLovin
McLovin - 6/16/2010, 9:54 AM
Guys, Hawks let us know that the interview was translated, so the issue you have with the poor English, is not the director's but clearly the translator's.

As Talontd stated, these are clearly set pics of the actors goofing around and having a good time between takes. I'm sure the final product will be much superior.

@ DDD - Dude, what's more important? The actor looking super juiced up, or portraying the character accurately?

I think the best news about this article is that the director seems really grounded on staying true to the source material. "Conan" is definitely a movie for adults. There is sex, violence and lot of action. He is a barbarian and everything will be great fun. But is not sadistic or horror movie with torture."

I am almost certain that the final product will be something that resembles the books much more than the original movies and we will likely get a movie with some hard core back in the 80's action. No CGI, just a bunch of tough as nails guys going savage on each other. It may not be epic, but IT WILL BE BARBARIC!!!

MatchesMalone
MatchesMalone - 6/16/2010, 9:55 AM
@DDD-Touche at the throwing the horse thing. I know you're a huge Conan fan and I guarantee you could school most people about anything Robert Howard. I'm just kinda playin' devil's advocate. I hope they don't screw up one of your favorite characters TOO much. :)
ManThing
ManThing - 6/16/2010, 9:58 AM
meh. I never read the books. Only the magazines and Marvel Comics.

He doesn't look exactly like the Conan I am familiar with but he does look tough and strong. I'm willing to give the movie a chance.

I don't see what's so hideous about this barbarian chick either. OK so she's not Victoria Secret hot but whadaya want? She's Cimmerian. I'm sure Conan would just be thrilled that she even had teeth! lol

@ DDD: This guy directed PATHFINDER??? oh no.... oh god...
MassExecutions
MassExecutions - 6/16/2010, 10:01 AM
@McLovin - Man, I hope your right. They should only need CGI for severed limbs and may be a monster or two.

You know, I don't know why Momoa isn't more ripped. We've seen less likely actors really pump up for a roll. Then again, some people just get strong without getting buff.
Talontd
Talontd - 6/16/2010, 10:02 AM
@DDD

The problem with that is that type of physique doesn't exist in the REAL WORLD!!! You can't have the agility of Momoa but the strength of Arnold!

CONANS' strength was also described as "unnatural" and "inhuman". When I hear adjectives like that, I immediately think, "This person is stronger than he appears to be." Case in point, Jason Momoa. He can still perform the feats you describe above because he is unnaturally strong, or inhumanly strong.

Still tho, he is not a "super"-man, don't forget in the Iron Shadows in the Moon, Conan managed to pickup the boulder that no one but the man-ape could lift, but unlike the man-ape, he couldn't throw it more than a few feet, as opposed to the man-ape who could throw the same stone across an entire glade.

Yea, he COULD be a bit bigger, but damn, your really splitting hairs...
Scarycherry
Scarycherry - 6/16/2010, 10:04 AM
The Conan books were the best! Robert E. Howard wrote him as very smart believe it or not! Conan spoke numerous languages, was a tracker, warrior of unbelievable strength, thief and he left Cimmeria at the age of 17. he didn't become King on his muscle alone! Worth reading!
