Rose McGowan talks Conan The Barbarian and cancelled Barbarella remake

Star of the upcoming Conan the Barbarian reboot Rose McGowan talks to Total film about her character and finally speaks up as to why her long awaited Barbarella remake never saw the light of day.

Rose spent 5-6 hours a day in the makeup chair for Conan the Barbarian, she had prosthetics starting from the bridge of her nose to the top of her head. “I think she’s quite majestic… She is a bit startling at first but I think she’s quite beautiful in her own way.”

She also gave her thoughs on why Jason Momoa is better then Arnold Schwarzenegger's Conan.“Arnold is very muscular, but Jason is a beautiful man. His muscles are very different – of the non-steroidal variety.

“If you go back and watch the Schwarzenegger one, he can barely pass his sword from one hand to the other, because he’s so bulky.”

Total film also asked her on the reason that her long anticipated Barbarella remake with director/fiancee Robert Rodriguez never got to production.

“It was a pity. I have a test that we did that would blow people’s minds. I took the flak. I never announced why."

“I never said why. I took all the hits of [people] saying, ‘She couldn’t raise the money.’ But there was $80m in Germany, but Robert [Rodriguez] didn’t want to shoot there and I had serious family stuff.”

So, could the project ever be resurrected? “Probably not… I’m with somebody British [financier Rob Adams] now.”

McGowan is also in this months issue of BlackBook magazine where she briefly talked about Conan and Barbarella.

"I'm so impressed by how insane and magnificent I look in the film" "I was in prosthetics for five hours each day from 2 untill 7 in the morning. The whole experience was otherwordly and beautiful. and I really loved what was being created. it was nice to feel that way"

The artcile went on to talk about McGowan's hertwo year absense from high profile films "I took two years off because my father died. I pulled out of three films to deal with it. We had $85 million to shoot Barbarella in Germany, but Robert did'nt want to shoot there".

She's right about Arnold being too bulky. I remember reading an interview years ago where Arnie said he had to lose mass to do some of the sword stuff like that scene where he's twirling the sword around for practice etc

- I'm sorry Rose but were we watching the same film here...Arnie seemed pretty seemless swinging his sword around to me...

p.s Youre fit lol

Funny how the actors and fans of this movie are so preoccupied with Arnold Schwarzenegger. They are the ONLY people bringing up the original film. Momoa brings it up unprovoked and begrudgingly say he's never seen it. That's pretty strange, or a flat out LIE. He talks about how this is new and fresh and not like the original, the original he's never seen lol It's so new and fresh and unlike the original that it's called CONAN: THE BARBARIAN.

g... t... f.... o..

And this chick is smoking crack. Arnold was ridiculously fluent with the sword.

No he wasn't, he had to loose a few pounds before they started training him how to use the damn thing and even then he was the most telegraphed swordsman onscreen. Most of Arnies fight scenes have to be snap-edited to make him look good cause he had no speed. And every interviewer brings up Arnie when they talk with Jason, I've yet to see an interview or even a fan thread where the Arnie isn't brought up. The fact is Arnie's films were bad, they flopped but fanboys took them to heart and like everything in fanboy childhood they never want another movie made to mess with their memories. Arnies was nothing like Conan in the books, Jason looks a lot better and this movie will probably make in one week, what both Arnie did in their entire run!

I'm with you 100%, Ceejay! The only good thing about the first Arnie film was James Earl Jones, PERIOD!!! Take him away from it and you have pretty much the same shit that was The Destroyer. The only reason we love those films is because we grew up with them. Seriously, how can anybody praise Arnie's Conan and shit on Lundgren's He-Man when they had the same stiff acting, crappy dialog and telegraphed fight scenes? The best thing about both franchises was the villain. Oh and BTW, Frank Langela as Skeletor acted circles around JEJ's Thulsa Doom. Momoa's Conan will blow both of them out the water, even with Rose MacGaggin in the cast. And that's definitely saying something.

I grew up watching Arnold as Conan and still love those movies today. When I fist saw Momoa I was like "He is WAY too small." Then I saw clips of him using the sword and some horseback shots. Now I believe this will shatter the mystique of the Arnold movies. They should just start calling King Conan from now on. His look is much truer to the look of Conan in the books and his sword play is awesome. At least that's what she said. =P

I hate her, hate her. I love her movies, but hate, hate her. I live in Northern Ireland, and she filmed a movie here, saying that if she grew up here she would have supported a terrorist organisation that has killed thousands, I hate to bring my own personal business into this, but how dare she say that. She doesnt know what growing up in Northern Ireland is like.

Moneybanks&possibly DoctorWho: I'll give you a head start, that twatly [foo foo] son of a whore works for the listed crap ass website(almost got me to mention it sucka) and might even be associated(mentions everytime) with paypal, so start there.

Maybe anyone with that gay ass avatar's comments should be auto eliminated, because they're usually just bitching stupid crap or advertising for a shitty site. There's always problems when ordering off their sites anyways.

If the Arnold movies are your only reference for Conan, you don't really know Conan. Sorry, it has to be said.

Conan is a wolf on the prowl. Arnold's Conan is an attack dog set loose.

@CatwomanLover

Really, she said that? Thats the last [frick]ing thing you say, all of the terrorist groups on both sides are cowards who killed innocent people for no good reason. Rose McGowan shouldnt say things about stuff she has no understanding of. I dont have the same experience of the troubles because I grew up in the South but even I know not to say the crap Rose came out with.

@Optimus

no, but then I hate Poison Ivy in any incarnation so I am biased. Always thought she was a pointless Batman villain

seriously, she's one of my favourite actresses and so beautiful. She speaks her mind and that's another thing I love about her. She can play any role and completely rock it.

"Funny how the actors and fans of this movie are so preoccupied with Arnold Schwarzenegger. They are the ONLY people bringing up the original film."

I have no idea why you say that, when it's so patently untrue.

"Momoa brings it up unprovoked and begrudgingly say he's never seen it. That's pretty strange, or a flat out LIE."

It's pretty strange, then. Why would he lie about this?

"lol It's so new and fresh and unlike the original that it's called CONAN: THE BARBARIAN."

That's a bit like criticizing Tim Burton's Batman for having the same title as the 1966 Batman film. "Conan the Barbarian" as a phrase long predates the 1982 film.

looks alot different from her movies, she's had some work done. Likely while not working because her Dad died. Unlike Arnold, a REAL professional actor who didn't budge from his Mr. Olympia contest because he's dedicated, AND STAR OF THE CARTOON SERIES COMING SOON DON'T MISS IT WWW.THEGOVE...

Yeah, it was called Conan. From what reviews say at least. Better than Mark Hamill or Mickey Rourke's touch ups.
