Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Gridelwald has a lowly Rotten Tomatoes score of 36% compared to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them's somewhat more impressive 74%. The hope is that the planned third instalment will be an improvement over its predecessor, and if star Dan Fogler is to be believed, that will be the case.
During an interview with SYFY Wire, the actor promised that writer J.K. Rowling and director David Yates have ensured that the next movie will be more in line with the first film than its grim and convoluted sequel.
"I can say I read the [Fantastic Beasts 3] script and the character development is really lovely and it’s very similar to the feel of the first movie, which I think is great," he confirmed, adding that the plan is for this next film to continue building up to the war between Grindelwald's forces and the rest of the Wizarding World (made up of heroes like Albus Dumbledore and Newt Scamander).
"It’s leading toward this massive war with the backdrop of World War II, so you can just imagine epic battle scenes are coming," he concluded.
Perhaps the biggest issue with The Crimes of Grindelwald was the way it lost focus, moving on both from Newt and the adorable magical creatures who inhabited that suitcase he carries.
The only place the franchise can go from here is up, and Fogler's comments should come as music to the ears of Harry Potter fans. Unfortunately, COVID-19 means Warner Bros. was forced to hit the pause button on Fantastic Beasts 3, so there's now at least a chance it will be unable to meet its planned release date next November.
