FANTASTIC BEASTS Star Mads Mikkelsen Believes Johnny Depp Could Return As Gellert Grindelwald

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore star Mads Mikkelsen has reflected on replacing Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald, admitting that there's a chance the actor could now return to the franchise.

With Johnny Depp engaged in a legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard, Warner Bros. made the controversial decision to replace him as Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. Doctor Strange star Mads Mikkelsen stepped in to pick up where Depp left off, and the response to his take on the villain was a positive one for the most part.

However, neither fans nor critics had much in the way of praise to share for the movie beyond Mikkelsen's performance, and a disappointing box office run has led to speculation that the franchise will be scrapped altogether.

It would be a shame for that to happen without this story getting a proper ending, though it would make sense for the planned next two movies to become one. Either way, Mikkelsen has now opened up about replacing Depp (via SFFGaztette.com) and suggests that, with the actor's legal issues behind him and his name now cleared, he could reprise the role.

"It was very intimidating," Mikkelsen said of filling in for the actor. "Obviously, well, now the course has changed - he won the suit, the court [case] - so let’s see if he comes back. He might."

"I’m a big fan of Johnny. I think he’s an amazing actor, I think he did a fantastic job. Having said that, I could not copy it. There’s there was no way I could just copy it, because it’s so much him. It would be creative suicide," he continued. "So, we had to come up with something else, something that was mine, and build a bridge between him and me. So, yes, it was intimidating."

"His fans were very, very sweet, but they were also very stubborn. I didn’t interact too much with them, but I could understand why they had their hearts broken."

It would be one hell of a move for Warner Bros. to bring Depp back, though whether the actor would be interested after being fired by the studio is another matter altogether (we know he doesn't plan to return to Pirates of the Caribbean). His return would definitely create a lot of buzz around the Fantastic Beasts franchise, though, and that's something it sorely needs at this point.

the third one served as an ending of the trilogy and im more than okay with it. these films never really took off and newt always felt misplaced in what turned out to be dumbledore vs grindelwald story.

With how little money the last film made, I’d be shocked if either of these actors return to the role.

We won't see a fourth film, they killed the franchise.

That third movie was pretty awful. Each entry in the series is worse than the one that came before it. In my opinion, combining Newt and the Dumbledore/Grindlewald stuff just doesn’t work. It’s like 2 different movies at the same time.

Yeah, he wants out of this mess. And that's being optimistic about this franchise continuing, but it's obvious that a fourth film is not gonna happen under the new WB bosses. We're getting HP sequels in a few years a la Jurassic World and then they would've sucked the whole IP dry.

I really enjoyed this third one. Waaaaay better than the second one which was a bore fest even Johnny couldn’t save.

To be fair, it might be the only thing to entice people to see the next one… if they make one.

Either they are going to take a chance and try to keep it going with Depp

Or

This franchise is dead, cause yeah the last one barely made any profit, made less than 10 million over breaking even

Revealing that Johnny Depp was Grindelwald in the 1st one was so disappointing. I love Depp but I thought Colin Farrell did such a good job it was disappointing (and a little insulting?) to rip off the mask and say, nope it was actually me this whole time!

That said, Mikkelsen is an improvement and they should just stick with him at this point. If there is a 4th one.

Mikkelsen is a great dude (and not just for daring to speak out his respect for Depp), but I don't really need another Fantastic Beasts. Instead, get this man a proper role in the MCU or Star Wars already!

@bkmeijer1 - Wasn’t he in Rogue One?

@BobbyW - he was, but that was really for only a couple of scenes. Almost as forgetable as his role in Doctor Strange in my opinion.

His character from Rogue One has potential though, so I wouldn't mind seeing him return in a more substantial role

I kinda like the idea of a different actor playing Grindelwald in each film. So far, we've had Colin Ferrel, Johnny Depp, Mads, and previously Jamie Campbell Bower. If they do another Fantastic Beasts, let's just use someone else. Keeps the character weird.

Though I do think they should move on.

There should have never been more than one Fantastic Beasts film. They should have followed it with "Hogwarts: A History" about the founding of Hogwarts, and then a "Quidditch Through the Ages" sports film.

If they really wanted to do Grindelwald, it should have been in something outside of Fantastic Beasts.

If there's even a movie to come back to. The first is still the best, the rest are unnecessary trash tbh.
