For anyone with even a passing interest in fantasy art or the steampunk genre, The Art Of Fantasy, Sci-Fi And Steampunk is a valuable addition to your library.

Written by Hiroshi Unno, the book is a well-researched and informative history of fantasy art that explores how various art movements influenced it.

Mr. Unno shows the influence artists such as William Blake, Richard Dado and Eugene Delacroix had on the genre.  Peppered among the many paintings and illustrations, decades of art history is presented in a manner that even a layman will enjoy. I was fascinated by the section on the Victorian period. The era’s effect on the steampunk genre is delved into when he addresses the work of Sci-Fi writers like H.G. Wells and Jules Verne.

The book is written in both Japanese and English. Publisher PIE International has done a commendable job in presenting a fine softcover, 360-page book filled with gorgeous reproductions of paintings, illustrations and posters. Chapter 4 in particular has some of the best images that should delight any fan of A Midsummer Nights Dream and Hans Christian Anderssen Fairytales.

This book was a pleasure to read. I learnt a great deal and really enjoyed the gorgeous artwork. Its pleasing appearance and abundant content will make it a perfect addition to your bookshelf. Very highly recommended!
