Addressing the hate for the green lantern movie

taking a deeper look into why every hates green lantern......

OK, i know that most everyone has seen the green lantern movie, and that everyone dislikes it for one reason or another. i just wanted to kind of address the subject, and hear everyone's thoughts, and to also share my own. i recently saw this movie for the first time about a week ago, and personally thought it was a good movie, but maybe that's for the following reasons:

1. I don't really read to much DC at all, maybe a few issues here and there, so i don't have a love for the character like all of the DC fans.

2. The CGI was pretty dang good, and i really liked Sinestro. (I'm a sucker for great CGI)

3. The story wasn't that bad, but then again i don't really know the whole story of Hal Jordan.

4. Parallax looked pretty cool, and the fight scene with GL was awesome. (despite the cheesy CHEESY movements while creating the constructs, like the catapult and Gatling gun and the horrendous belly flop.)

5. I love every CBM, and i probably always will.

Now saying those things, i want to say the things i didn't like this movie for:

1. Ryan Reynolds, not my favorite actor. hes not super hero material.

2. the love story kind of brought down the movie, and it was just sort of cheesy.

Mark Strong was probably my favorite part about the whole film, he's an amazing actor and he is very talented. i don't really know the story of Sinestro either, so maybe that's why i like the film adaptation of him so much. They made all of the characters look a lot like the comic book characters as well. the post credit scene was pretty cool to, i liked how he put on the yellow ring, maybe in the next film there will be the Sinestro corps?

well personally i thought it was a good CBM, probably not the best by far. but to me it wasn't the worst either, it was certainly not as bad as everyone says it is.
that's my opinion on GL, and i would kind of like to hear what everyone has to think about it.

thanks for reading, ill post later.

"2. The CGI was pretty dang good, and i really liked Sinestro. (I'm a sucker for great CGI)

Not sure if we were watching the same movie ... I was awfully annoyed by the CGI throughout the movie. Floating heads, bad Kilowag. Horrible render on the other aliens, I mean, none of them looked remotely real. It was like watching a higher quality Playstation 2 game's cut-scenes.

"4. Parallax looked pretty cool, and the fight scene with GL was awesome. (despite the cheesy CHEESY movements while creating the constructs, like the catapult and Gatling gun and the horrendous belly flop.) "

Again, BAD CGI, the talking Space Spaghetti didn't cut it for me. The scene where Hal creates a giant racetrack to save the helicopter, I just knew the movie hit a point where it couldn't come back from.

I'm sorry, I clearly hated it. I'm not bringing in some Marvel vs DC crap, but the movie was just terrible. I thought DC/WB could of done much better. Could of spent their money on the movie's CGI instead of bad marketing. Especially after promises/expectations were made that this was the 'Star Wars' of CBM's.

I enjoyed watching the midnight premiere of this. But then again, I like it the same way I like Primetime TV action scenes and SitCom dialogue. Disappointment seems to stem from the fact that this film was marketed as a "Space Opera Epic" yet turned out to be a "Soap Opera with some space scenes".

I thought it was alright, I think they should've put more emphasis on space, excluded Parallax since he's too big a bad for a first movie, made Hector less whiny, and used more practical effects rather than the gigantic amount of CGI.

I didn't have any problems with Ryan though, he did a pretty good job, and captured Hal Jordan's essence very well. He just wasn't given much to work with.

If they wanted to save the series with a sequel, WB needs to get a solid script, show less Carol Ferris, show less earth, allude to the other corps, put emphasis on Hal and Sinestro's partnership, show some space policing, show Sinestro's fall from grace, and give some sort of non-convoluted way of explaining Parallax not being gone for good.

@threebigtacos Maybe what they meant by Star Wars of CBMs is that it will be heavily edited in the future to milk fans of their money.

@ x-menruletheworld

you're entitled to like this movie if you want, but personally i thought it was piss poor.

i only liked the stuff on oa with sinestro & the rest of the corp & that last al of 15 minutes, everything else about the movie was a shit storm.

1. Ryan Reynolds was a horrible choice to play Hal. Nothing positive about his perfprmance whatsoever.

2. Crapp CGI. Really noticeable at time, weird that WB couldn't give them some more dough for good CGI.

3. Blake Lively was almost as bad as Reynolds.

4. Tim Robbins was pointless.

5. That stupid "sidekick" who was supposed to be "funny".

6. No mention of Gardner, Rayner, or Stewart.

7. Parallax was lame. A cloud with a head. How creative.

8. Pointless scenes.

9. Lame soundtrack.

10. Too much time spent on Hector Hammond.

Sinestro was the only good part. the rest sucked.

It was ok, but it was only as good quality as a golden age CBM (before Batman Begins) so it didn't work... plus we had an extraordinary summer of movies that GL just couldn't compare to... sadly it failed both in audience and most fans... reboot with J.J. Abrams as director and Nathan Fillion as Hal, call it the Emerald Knight

@jjmeylar Got to agree with you on that one sir. I honestly loved this movie, it was my favorite CBM of the year. Everyone I know loved the movie, and it only got trashed on because of the critics. This was a great film, and Ryan Reynolds delivered as much as Mark Strong did. Great movie, "haters gonna hate."

I wanna say that I am a huge Green Lantern fan. I started reading Blackest Night and from there started collecting Green Lantern comics. Anyways, I've read the Sinestro Corps War, all the Blackest Night Graphic Novels except for The Green Lantern Corps, Rebirth, and several others, and I have now seen the movie 6 times. I brought people with me every single time. Each time the person I brought to the movie loved it and didn't understand the hatred towards the movie. I've studied people's reactions and I can understand some of the complaints with Sinestro putting the yellow ring on at the end seeming kind of out of nowhere, and Parallax being too big a villain to introduce GL to, but the CGI was fantastic. I am just not feeling the hate towards this movie. The story was great, Hal and Hector were extremely well played by the actors, and the action scenes were phenomenal. And I should point out that my parents were dreading this movie, but I made them come with me to see it on my birthday, and they both loved it despite their initial misgivings and prejudices. Watch the movie again and try to dial back the initial prejudice you may have towards it and I think you'll recognize it as a well written and well-acted movie. Certainly not as good as First Class, but definitely better than Superman Returns or Daredevil.

I thought some of the CGI was great but then some was absolutely terrible. I thought the suit on Hal and the other Green Lanterns looked awesome but when Hal first got abducted by the ring and sent to Abin Sur's ship that was pretty bad cgi. I though Parallax looked bad at some times and good at some times.

The movie was cool for what it was.

Some people trippin on the CGI needs their eyes checked when compared to other movies in the genre, this was way more polished and had alot more CG. Only things that were not good were the Guardians and Kilowog in one scene.

The cast were good. The script and editing is what hurt the movie. There were no character development and no surprises to keep the audience guessing. Adding a random love triangle a hour into the movie without any build-up is hurting this. Not having Hal doing anything fearless to show him being without fear in the movie hurts what a GL suppose to be.

Hal father death scene is a throwaway scene the way it is edited into the movie and adds no emotion to the movie.

People talking about too much time spent on Hammond. There wasn't enough time spent on the character. He is introduced 30 minutes into the movie and the movie is only 1hr and 40 minutes. I liked the way he used his powers in the lab but he needed to be shown doing more evil and a better reason for being evil.

I did enjoy all the constructs in the movie. None of them were cheesy and they made sense for what the situation he was in. Cheesy is just a word that is just thrown around too much to describe movies. My favorite was water. It was a smart choice and fitted perfectly for what the situation was.

Compared to the 3 other CMB movies, I would rank it below all three but it would be right with Thor. Thor is a lil bit better than Gl but not by much.

humbleme
humbleme - 9/5/2011, 7:25 AM
The reason for the hate is simple: The movie wasn't good.

The story, chopped up by WB, didn't resonate with anyone. They tried to take a fantastical world building film and turn it into a typical superhero film, and lost a lot of important scenes in the process. The story we got was simply not good. Parallax's actions didn't make sense. The tension just wasn't there. We didn't really see Hal's journey. One moment he was an inconfident loser with god-like powers, the next he was a strategic dynamo.

The villains were not emotionally engaging or very menacing. Hector Hammond got a lot of backstory, but for what? Did anyone empathize with him? My daddy thinks I'm a loser so... MURDER!

The CGI, for people who can tell the difference between good and bad CGI, was bad. I don't care in most cases, but even I could tell some things were shoddy. They had too many SFX shots to process in too short a time.

Between those things, the movie turned off the vast majority of people. And it turned 'em off bad, because story, effects and villains are a big part of why people like these things.

Ryan Reynolds didn't do a bad job of Hal Jordan, imo. But he didn't really do a good job. He didn't make the movie better, at all, like he made XMO:Wolverine better or like RDJ made Iron Man better. He was just there, letting the script and supporting cast fail to serve him.

No one really cared about Blake Lively being too young or John Stewart not being there.

Given the access to the Internet, people like you can go on a site, post on an article, and be rude. All of my articles have gotten good feedback and positive comments and legit discussions. And I never claimed to be a journalist, I just like to share my thoughts. Get over yourself.

No one expects their stuff to be posted on the top whatever page. It just happens.
So XMRTW, good job.
If you have an account to this site it's because you either
A) Want to post an article
or
B) You want to comment on an article

Either way you want to contribute with your two cents.
Not be a journalist.

Either way.
The movies sucked to most of the people that saw it.
Enough that one could say that everyone dislikes it.
And.... it did suck. It sucked a golf ball through a garden hose.
Don't take things to heart and start getting literal.

The two things I hear people compalin about that I dont agree with are the bad cgi, and sinestro going bad all of the sudden with no explanation.

1. Bad cgi: How else would you make transparent green constructs look? I dont care who does the cgi, transparent green constructs are all gonna look the same. Hi cgi suit makes more sense than a real suit anyway, so it doesnt have to look real, CAUSE ITS NOT. Oh and 3D makes everything look worse BTW so save some money and stop watching movies in 3D.
2: Sinestro going bad so fast: Think about Boromir. Awesome guy, bad ring, good intentions. Just looking for more strength and it bites him in the ass. Nuff said. Sinestro never says "Im bad now and I'm gonna rule the galaxy." he just puts on the ring.

Yes I still agree Reynolds and Blake sucked, but I hope they do a second one cause sinestro was too good and his yellow suit was too awesome to not make another.
I really do not think it was the worst CBM ever. I'm buying it.

awkward lantern tinted muscle suit oozes green green.
totally weird lighting on suit against hal skin.
this was bad CGI.
do not compare it to other CGI, just look at it.
bad.
the decision of using CGI instead of a costume at all times was a horrible one.
making a green lantern costume shouldn't have been hard.

I look forward for months for this movie to come out and after seeing the midnight showing i was very disappointed. Everyone makes valid arguements and I hope that if they even consider going through with making the sequel they take into effect what the true fans have to say. I thought the CGI was awesome. The main parts of the movie that bothered me were they focused too much on the love story of Hal and Carol Ferris and they should have spent much more of the movie in space and on Oa. Somehow they went like 100 million dollars over their budget for the movie to do horribly. But i do hope that they go through with a sequel to redeem themselves and to show Sinestro become a yellow lantern.
Sapphire875
Sapphire875 - 9/12/2011, 3:53 PM
Another thing is they rushed the backstory of the Green Lanterns, about the Guardians, how the ring gets it power all of that stuff...i know that if i went into the movie with little to no knowledge of the Green Lanterns I would have been confused.
TimeLordLantern
TimeLordLantern - 9/14/2011, 10:57 PM
I knew it wasn't going to be great but I gave it a good job because this is the first time Green Lantern was on the Big Screen. Mark Strong as Sinestro was GREAT! They rushed the fights between Hector and Parallax. Green Lantern wasn't the Star Wars of CBMs. Green Lantern is the reason Star Wars was MADE IN THE FIRST PLACE. The problem is that they packed almost 60 years of Comic book history into a 5 minute intro. Which then left out (And got MANY things wrong) a lot.

Nice way of stating your opinion with constructive criticism. There is really no need for all the hating. If anyone can see the room for improvement in this movie it's me. I don't think anyone has seen it more, and I still enjoy it.

I'm seeing it for the 23rd time today!!!! Can't wait for Blu Ray!!!!!

This movie is why I'm finally getting a Blu Ray player, and hopefully soon, an HDTV.
