GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Director James Gunn Reveals How Ego The Living Planet Takes On A Human Form

We all know that Ego is, well, a Living Planet, so why and how is he walking around as Kurt Russell in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2? Director James Gunn has finally provided an answer on just that.

We've known for a long time now that Ego the Living Planet will be revealed as Star-Lord's father in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but the fact he takes on a human form has left many fans baffled.

Well, in an interview with Complex to promote the release of The Belko Experiment, director James Gunn explained how the character is able to create a human form which he used to seduce Meredith Quill and to communicate with his son and the rest of the team in the highly anticipated sequel.

"Ego is a living planet who is able to manifest himself in different ways he’s been alone for millions of years and he’s learned how to control the molecules around him in such a way as to create avatars of themselves, such as Kurt Russell," says the filmmaker. "I think Ego was a very lonely character out there by himself and went off in search of love and perhaps found it in Quill’s mother."

He definitely doesn't sound like a traditional villain then, though we don't know for sure that he will actually be a bad guy in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2! These comments also pretty much confirm that Ego will appear in his Living Planet form, something many believe has already been spotted in the trailers. What do you guy think? As always, let us know your thoughts in the usual place.

I just want to see him in his planet form at some point in the film.

@Mrcool210 -

Pretty sure the thing that the GOTG are planning to explode and the massive planet they are fighting on will end up being Ego's planet form...

@Mrcool210 - We will, Gunn just doesn't want to spoil it. He's vocal about how involved he is in the marketing.

He's a "Living Planet." Is any explanation actually needed at that point? C'mon. A giant planet with a face?! He could turn into a toaster and it would make as much sense.

@quidom - Willing suspension of disbelief. Some people need to have it all explained and scientific like.

@Goldboink - Fair enough.

So...what DO you buy a living planet for Father's Day?

Maybe Ego is a jerk in the beginning but redeems himself by sacrificing his life to save Peter. That way Kurt Russell only has to do one movie and he's out. It's all got to end with the Guardians landing on (or en route) to Earth anyway. That's what I want to see. Can you tell I'm hyped for Infinity War?

@lrod1966 - Nah, The power Stone is still on Xandar. Thanos still has to destroy Xandar, the Nova Corp, and take the Power Stone. Then when he heads to Earth to get the mind and Time Stone, the guardians will chase after.

@Deonox -

The main focal point of Infinity War is Thanos's journey to Earth so i'm expecting;

- Hela delivers either the Soul Stone to Thanos, the Space Stone will be used by Thor to return to Earth after the Rainbow bridge/Asgard is mostly destroyed in Thor;Ragnarok.

- The GOTG, now two-time Galaxy savers are given the Power Stone by the Nova Corp and Starlord suggests they go to Earth because its 'dull/boring and nothing ever happens on Earth'

- Thanos meanwhile uses the Soul Stone to realise where the Infinity Stones are and meets with the Collector, killing him and taking the Reality Stone.

- Thanos, angered by Earth being the focal point of everything in his plan going wrong, sends the Black Order to Earth.

- The GOTG arrive on Earth only to be met with an attack from the Avengers, Tony believing them to be the force that is coming to Earth.

- In the chaos, the Black Order manage to retrieve the Space Stone and give it to Thanos - who now has the Space, Reality and Soul stone.

- Using the Space Stone, Thanos comes down to Earth himself and kills Vision by ripping the Mind Stone from his head and transports everyone into space. Doctor Strange uses his magic to save everyone from the vacuum of space and attempts to use the Time Stone however is locked in a battle with the Black Order alongside the GOTG and the Avengers.

- Thanos uses the Reality Stone and Mind Stone on Iron Man to make him see a false vision of the Avengers being defeated, when in actuality they are putting up a strong fight against the Black Order and manage to defeat all of them

- They battle Thanos but he uses the gems to overpower them, taking the Time Stone from Doctor Strange and eventually gain the Power Stone.

- Thanos reverses Time, bringing back the Black Order and the Avengers realise they are doomed, however Captain America walks forward doing his speech from the comics. Thanos responds with his line "Noble Sentiments from one who is about to die". At which point Captain America smiles and lifts his hand as Mjölnir flies into it - lightning flashes blasting Thanos backwards as the Avengers stand together with Captain America holding the hammer of Thor shouting 'Avengers Assemble'

- They battle intensily, several of them dying in the insuing battle taking down the Black Order and rushing towards Thanos, however Thanos has had enough of this and raises his gauntlet, clicking his fingers the entire universe around him explodes and disappears in an instant. The movie ends in a similar style to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 - with the villain seemingly victorious.

Ego is not the villain, Josh!

Ayesha and the Sovereign are the villains.

How do you not know this as an editor on this site?

@PsychoticSpaceRaccoon -

SPOILERS

The plot leak from a while back mentioned that Ego is the main villain manipulating events, while Ayesha is a misdirect - unknowingly working for Ego who has similar goals. Taserface meanwhile is kind of his own thing.

So i expect Josh is working off that leak.

@Scarilian - Thanks for the info.

I guess we'll have to see if that's the case.

As long as we get a giant planet with Kurt Russell's likeness plastered on it, mustache and all.

I hope we get the planet form also, i'm partially expecting it to be the massive planet they are fighting on - even if it does not have hs face on it.

I think there's a good chance we'll see a de-aged Kurt Russell in a flashback scene set in the late 70s (his meeting with Star-Lord's mother).

Actually I'm glad there's an explanation, my issue with Russel up till this point was they didn't explain how...now I'm satisfied.
