The live-action Masters of the Universe reboot is finally going to see the light of day after being in and out of development for many years.

After numerous false starts, Netflix was all set to develop a feature take on the beloved animated series back in 2022, but we recently got word that the latest attempt to get the project off the ground had also fallen by the wayside.

However, we'd later learn that Amazon/MGM Studios had acquired the movie, with Bumblebee director Travis Knight in talks to helm. Now, multiple trades are reporting that Knight has officially signed on, and the movie is set to hit theaters on June 5, 2026.

Chris Butler rewrote the script from an initial draft by David Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings). Previously, the Nee Brothers (The Lost City) were attached to direct.

An updated synopsis has also been revealed, it sounds like this adaptation will be making at least one major change to the established lore.

The story follows “10-year-old Prince Adam who crashed to Earth in a spaceship and was separated from his magical Power Sword—the only link to his home on Eternia. After tracking it down almost two decades later, Prince Adam is whisked back across space to defend his home planet against the evil forces of Skeletor. But to defeat such a powerful villain, Prince Adam will first need to uncover the mysteries of his past and become He-Man: the most powerful man in the Universe!”

There have been several different takes on Prince Adam's origin in the various animated shows and comic books, but this is the first time the character will grow up on Earth before making his way back to Eternia as an adult - although he '80s live-action movie starring Dolph Lundgren was primarily set on Earth.

West Side Story actor Kyle Allen was set to play He-Man, but these reports indicate that another actor may end up stepping into the role.

Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch will produce, along with DeVon Franklin.

Netflix reportedly spent almost $30 million in development costs over two years working on the project, before deciding to walk away when the budget, originally set for more than $200 million, could not be meaningfully reduced.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe takes place on Eternia, a planet of magic, myth and fantasy. Its lead character is Prince Adam, the young son of Eternia's rulers, King Randor and Queen Marlena. Whenever Prince Adam holds the Sword of Power aloft and proclaims "By the Power of Grayskull! I have the power!” he is endowed with "fabulous secret powers" and transformed into He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe. Together with his close allies, Battle Cat (who undergoes a similar transformation from being Adam's cowardly pet tiger Cringer), The Sorceress, Teela, Man-At-Arms and Orko, He-Man uses his powers to defend Eternia from the evil forces of Skeletor. Skeletor's main goal is to conquer the mysterious fortress of Castle Grayskull, from which He-Man draws his powers. If successful, Skeletor would have enough power to rule all of Eternia and possibly the entire universe

Why? Why does Hollywood always feel the need to change things. Who in the world thinks it's a good idea to involve Earth in He-Man? And to say Prince Adam grew up on Earth? Did they not learn their lesson with the old school movie when they made Earth a big part of it?

I mean what, is this gonna be like Man of Steel where we see him grow up?

Just terrible.

@CorndogBurglar - It's gonna be the first Thor film where it starts off good up until we leaves Asgard and then we're just stuck with a depowered Thor wandering around in a small town so the film makers can save some money.

@CorndogBurglar - exactly my thoughts. I can’t believe I got excited AGAIN and immediately facepalmed the next moment after reading this earth shit.

@CorndogBurglar - I feel this movie is going to get such backlash that it’ll go through extensive rewrites.

@WruceBayne - I hope so! Stuff like this makes me prefer they just don't make it.

@HashTagSwagg - Man, I hated that. I know the MCU was in their early days and didn't have huge budgets to play with yet, but whoever idea it was to make Thor get depowered in his first appearance should never work in Hollywood again.

@HashTagSwagg - I've repeated this for many years now, the first Thor movie was basically a Lundgren's Masters of the Universe remake.

I guess the people behind this new movie are just going to do a similar movie too, with a big part of the movie set on Earth to save costs.

@CorndogBurglar - while I completely understand this sentiment, the same can be said going the other direction. We always hear people complain about lack of originality. That being said I totally get where you're coming from. Source material should be respected so all we can do is hope for the best.

@CorndogBurglar - I don't mind. Origins are changed in movies all the time, often to to great success. Only when it doesn't work we trip over it, so far now I'm gonna wait and see.

@bkmeijer1 - Thats cool man. Yours is admittedly a much more reasonable approach. But you've known me here for a while, I tend to lean more towards source material accuracy with projects than not. I wouldn't call myself a purist because I know nothing can be made 100% accurate to source material. But when there's no real reason to change things, I just don't get it. I just don't see how someone can say, "Oh I'm getting the opportunity to write a live action movie for one of the most popular franchises of all time? Let's see how I can make it different from its already massively successful version."

Like, you're taking a huge risk with things like that. These properties ALL became popular enough to get movies and shows made about them due to their source material. As soon as you start screwing with that you're taking a huge risk of people not liking it, or creating an inferior version.

Sometimes it does work out. I'll die on the hill that Watchmen's ending was better than the source material, for example.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 5/3/2024, 8:35 AM
@CorndogBurglar - if there's no reason to change the source material, it is indeed unnecessary to try. Still, I like some changes as I otherwise might as well pick up the source itself.

And I guess that's why I also think changing it could even be beneficial. The original did indeed draw in the audience, but the new could do the same. Too much changes alienate the old audience though. It's a fine line I guess.

Also, I agree the movie ending is better.

The new origin sounds kinda cool, would be cool if Skeletor stalks his dreams while on earth something like that
ComicBandit
ComicBandit - 5/2/2024, 9:29 PM
@Gambito - Skeletor should be his real estate agent uncle who follows him back to Eternia and decides to turn Castle Grayskull into a block of condominiums. Also a few dance numbers would be great. Skeletor and He-man prancing around and singing would be awesome. Also, I'm all for them gender swapping Adam, and making him Princess Adama, who pulls the magic sword and turns into She-Man. If anyone is interested, I have 100 more ways for them to f@$k this up.
boiling
boiling - 5/2/2024, 9:33 PM
@ComicBandit - "She-Man" 🤣 it’s [frick]ing hilarious but also sadly not that far fetched to imagine coming out of modern day world.
ComicBandit
ComicBandit - 5/2/2024, 9:51 PM
@boiling - My only real issue with when they do this is why not just make a film with a whole new mythology and premise? Why ride off a property people grew up loving just to ensure that it gets some eyeballs? If you really want to prove how creative you are, create your own franchise. But TBH his mother is originally from earth if I'm remembering correctly, or am I somehow mixing him up with Spock? Ah, I give up.

All they have to do in order to screw the pooch, is make it JUST like the cartoons.

Dumb as a hinge in an axe handle
ComicBandit
ComicBandit - 5/3/2024, 4:38 AM
@r1g0r - Then what's the point of making it at all? No one is even saying they should do the whole "by the power of Grayskull" bit. But there are a lot of fantasy elements that can still make this a great sci-fi fantasy epics. Even with a little tongue in cheek comedy mixed in.
ComicBandit
ComicBandit - 5/3/2024, 4:50 AM
@r1g0r - historically Hollywood has proved that all you have to do make movies like this or the Avengers work depite it's somewhat ridiculous premise or silly costumes is take it seriously. For years we got over the top and crap iterations of superheroes because people considered the ideas "dumb as a hinge in a axe handle."

@ComicBandit - Here you go...

boiling
boiling - 5/3/2024, 5:32 AM
@ComicBandit - oh I don't know about that "Mother from Earth" stuff, I mean there have been so many interpretations of the lore over the decades they recently had that DC Superhero crossover event if I remember correctly - but whatever, the point stands; you do not need Earth to tell a MotU story. And you are absolutely correct, they using established property (again) because they have not enough creative power to start a new brand where they can thow wahtever sticks to the wall.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 5/3/2024, 5:35 AM
@ComicBandit - Being a tad more serious about all of this, on paper I don't like it but there are ways it could work I guess and the why would be this...

...You are basicaly setting up a scenario where Skeletor won as is in power, He-mans allies could be scattered or captive thus when it comes to the Eternia bit you have a heroes journey gaining the use of his abilities and/or allies in order to go take on the forces of evil. THAT can work, the stuff on Earth little interest in at all but the titular character no longer recognising his homeworld and more like they eyes of a human exploring the world and characters (rather than alien Prince already fully in control of his powers and still living in a nice castle with lots of friends) has more of a potential hook for new audiences...

...for those that know they original almost all, myself included will hate the idea, for those completely new to it all it could work and may win us old farts over but I doubt it.

Apophis71 - 5/3/2024, 6:44 AM
@boiling - In the 1980s series, Queen Marlena Glenn is an astronaut from Earth, Boise Idaho. Unsure about other versions as only realy know that one cartoon run of it but, yes, in that his Mother is from Earth.

Apophis71
Apophis71 - 5/3/2024, 8:02 AM
@ComicBandit - True and do feel they could do the same thing with an original IP and be all the better for doing that instead of this. As I say on paper I don't like it but as from the original animation his Mother was from Earth can kinda see how it could work but still don't like the concept but we'll see :D
ComicBandit
ComicBandit - 5/3/2024, 8:11 AM
@Apophis71 - I agree. Problem is when they do stuff like this, makes me think the story they have isn't that good and they need the established property to get people to even bother watching it. But like you said, we will see.

@ComicBandit -
Frankly, I don't see a reason to make this.
I was NEVER a fan, and it just sounds dumber as I age.
There's plenty of more plausibly successful remakes to be made.
WHY start with something that's been made fun of for decades?!?

@Apophis71 - ok didn't know that! I barely watched the tv show, never really appealed to me, just read the comics. For me Eternia was always Galaxies far away from ours, just as Star Wars. A major plus for me that it had nothing to do with Earth. It's rare.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 5/3/2024, 9:53 AM
@boiling - UK, back then where I lived you could only get at max three TV channels (only two if the weather was bad) so if a kid there wasn't many options what to watch and was down to if you mostly tuned into BBC1 or ITV, lol.

I actualy enjoyed the series however even if I found the moral of the story bit at the end funny and a tad odd :D

boiling - 5/3/2024, 12:00 PM
@Apophis71 - yea I feel you, we did get cable TV very late, early nineties, at that time I was way more into other stuff than MotU and just caught glimpses of the TV show. I guess it already was outdated at that time period.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 5/3/2024, 12:30 PM
@boiling - I had way more love of Thundercats of those 80's animations we got from across the Pond when it took over the slot of MotU, but yeh, think the original was very much an 'of it's time thing' that likely wouldn't have resonated as well a decade or more later but we didn't have much kids TV until digital was phased in or Sky became an option (Cable never realy took off here from what I recall/know).

@r1g0r - I understand what you mean. But They're going to do it even if we don't want them to, so at least they can make something good to great. Instead of making something people will continue to make fun of. I've seen a lot of ridiculous ideas so well or at least be entertaining. But, like I said we will see.
