Paramount Pictures has teamed up with Spyglass Media to co-produce and distribute the fifth installment in the Scream franchise, Variety reports.

Ready or Not directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will helm the movie. James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick are co-writing the screenplay. Producers for the film are James Vanderbilt, Paul Neinstein and William Sherak, with  Kevin Williamson executive producing.

Plot details are still under wraps, but we do know that David Arquette will reprise the role of Officer Dewey Riley from the previous films. Rumors are still circulating that Neve Campbell is also set to return as put-upon lead Sidney Prescott, but that's yet to be confirmed. Whoever winds up joining Dewey, it's probably safe to assume they'll all be stalked by a knife-wielding maniac in a Ghostface mask.

Principal photography is expected to begin late summer in Wilmington NC, and Paramount hopes to release the movie at some point next year.

The Scream movies vary in quality (and the less said about the TV series the better), but with the Ready or Not crew on board fans will be hoping that the iconic horror franchise is able get back on track and deliver another tongue-in-cheek thrill ride.

I kinda feel that this movie should have a new cast so that gives more avenues to explore the tropes of current horror movies.

Scream is almost a "timeless" series, no reboots necessary. Just have a cast of attractive young people getting chased by a killer in a ghost mask with a knife, along with some meta references and scenarios and boom, you got a scream movie.

I mean, I still really like the series, it was the first horror series I got into as a kid, along with the Halloween movies, but even then those I just watched on AMC, these I had beg my parents to rent from blockbuster

They should do a semi-sequel ...with a whole new cast . Yeah the TV show sucked ! But the mask was a very cool update...they should go with that look.

I’m almost always going to choose a squeal even if very late, to a reboot.

It’s always nice to catch up with characters years later and see how things have turned out for them, while also benefiting from advances in movie making. Not that it’s a heave CGI movie, just saying.

I’d still love a new RoboCop w/ Peter Weller, a Conan 3 w/ Arnold and throw in Ace Ventura 3 while your at it

@NathanielX - lmao. You said it. Lol. Huge Star Wars fan, sadly disappointed with everything Disney has been doing with their movies. Disney +’s Mandolorian is the only quality work that’s come out so far. Here’s hoping Obi Wans series, and Ashoka’s and w/e else they throw at us moving forward is as good as Mandolorian has been.

Shake what was done to the final trilogy, I personally feel it completely shets on everything that came before it. Almost as if they wanted to kill off the main storyline. We’ll if they did, they succeeded in alienating a huge chunk of fans.

Rant over
