Just a few weeks after news broke that horror icon and legendary final girl Neve Campbell was in preliminary talks to join Spyglass Media Group's upcoming Scream reboot, the studio has confirmed the return of another original cast member in David Arquette, who is all set to reprise his role as Sheriff Dewey Riley.
Variety also notes that the studio is currently in talks with other legacy cast members, presumably including the aforementioned Neve Campbell and Arquette's on-screen wife Courteney Cox, to join the new film.
In a statement, Arquette said, “I am thrilled to be playing Dewey again and to reunite with my ‘Scream’ family, old and new. ‘Scream’ has been such a big part of my life, and for both the fans and myself, I look forward to honoring Wes Craven’s legacy.,” which certainly adds fuel to the fire that the upcoming "reboot" is actually a sequel of sorts.
Ready or Not directors Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are set to helm the new film, with a screenplay from James Vanderbilt (Zodiac; The Amazing Spider-Man) and Guy Busick (Ready or Not; Castle Rock).
Production is slated to begin later this year in Wilmington, NC, albeit when proper safety protocols are established.
The first four extremely successful films were all directed by horror legend Wes Craven with Kevin Williamson writing three of them, including the game-changing first installment, and starred Campbell in the lead role as Sidney Prescott with Courteney Cox and David Arquette also appearing in every movie.
In lieu of a Scream 5, the series was given a small-screen reboot on MTV in 2015, but it was canceled after two seasons and later revived on VH1 where it aired its final season last year.
