SCREAM: New Movie Reportedly In The Works From Gary Barber’s Spyglass Media Group

With the recent resurgence of Michael Myers and Pennywise at the global box office, it sounds like they may soon be joined by Ghostface as it's being reported that a new Scream movie may be in the works...

Bloody Disgusting has learned that a new Scream movie is currently in the very early stages of development at Gary Barber's Spyglass Media Group (formerly Spyglass Entertainment), but it's not entirely clear yet whether it will be a true sequel to the original tetralogy or a reboot of the entire franchise.

It's still way too early in the process to tell, but franchise creator Kevin Williamson is not expected to write the screenplay, although that's subject to change.

The first four hit films were all directed by horror legend Wes Craven with Kevin Williamson writing three of them, including the game-changing first installment, and starred Neve Campbell in the lead role as Sidney Prescott with Courteney Cox and David Arquette also appearing in every installment.

In lieu of a Scream 5, the series was given a small-screen reboot on MTV in 2015, but it was canceled after two seasons and later revived on VH1 where it aired its most recent - and seemingly final - season earlier this year.

Scream 4 was okay, not bad but kind of boring.

I'm always down for another entry in this franchise. I have enjoyed each one to a varying degree.

I'd rank them:

1. Scream
2. Scream 4
3. Scream 2
4. Scream: The Series
5. Scream 3

They should not reboot the franchise, but rather bridge the past films into a new group of characters.

I wonder who’ll they will get to direct it. I think Jordan Peele would come the closest to bringing the self-awareness that Wes Craven brought to the first four. He’d be a good fit.

As long as they bring back Roger Jackson as the voice of Ghostface, that would be the icing of the cake.

They could easily do a true sequel but act as a soft reboot of the franchise. Make where Woodsboro has had a string of mysterious murders that are all linked to each other with each victim being murdered based on a horror trope.

Dewey Riley now retired watches the news and begins to believe that a maniac is using the Ghostface moniker to kill people based on horror tropes. Dewey returns to Woodboro only to find out he is at the center of the murders with people he worked with showing up dead with clues leading to him. The new Ghostface warns Dewey that if he contacts his wife or Sidney he will murder his daughter and the only way to win the game is to play by the rules.

It could be a cool cat and mouse game between Dewey and the new Ghostface while leaving Sidney to live in peace without being forced to relive another killer.

Eh, could work I guess being that these movies are self aware so they could play on the whole "Hollywood is just doing sequels to old movies" argument.

Let Sidney finally be the killer and then the franchise can die already.

Always thought it would be interesting to do a commentary on the modern obsession with "true crime" instead of going back down the horror movie references.

It can be interesting something like this.

Years after the premiere of Scream, the cast of the first film lives far from the franchise. Then, after a great reunion at Wes Craven's funeral, They begin to be killed by someone disguised as the 90's icon. Ghostface.

@Repian - I like what I'm hearing. Whose the killer gonna be. I day Jamie Kennedy since his career path isnt the greatest and they could play that into the movie.

I've enjoyed all the movies so yeah, I'm open to this. Maybe soft-reboot by using a different cast of characters in a new town, but I don't like the idea of hard rebooting the 1st movie.

They should get Anna Faris to be the killer.
