The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend's Wedding; The Family Stone) has joined the cast of Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media's upcoming Scream sequel Further details are unavailable, but they do reveal that he'll be playing a cop, which will undoubtedly put him on a collision course with Ghostface.
Mulroney is the first new addition to the ensemble, joining returning players Melissa Barrera (Sam Carpenter), Jenna Ortega (Tara Carpenter), Jasmin Savoy Brown (Mindy Meeks-Martin), Mason Gooding (Chad Meeks-Martin), and Hayden Panettiere (Kirby Reed)
Production is slated to begin this summer, with Radio Silence (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett) at the helm. Scream (2022) writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick also penned the follow-up.
As we await more casting news, the studio has remained mum on whether surviving legacy cast members Neve Campbell (Sidney Prescott) and/or Courteney Cox (Gale Weathers) will be back for the yet-to-be-titled Scream 6, but we wouldn't rule either out just yet.
Plot details remain under heavy lock-and-key, but the next film will not take place in Woodsboro, and an early synopsis says the film, “continues with the four survivors of the Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter.” Of course, unfortunately for them, Ghostface won't be far behind.
Scream (2022) was one of this year's biggest box office smashes, grossing over $140 million worldwide on an estimated $24 million production budget, and successfully reviving the classic horror franchise after a decade-long hiatus.
Scream 6 is set to hit theaters on March 31, 2023.
