Today at Target, I picked up a little boys and girls' Iron Man 3 storybook and sat down to read it. Long story short, I was amazed at the amounts of spoilers and decided to post it here. Before I get into things I will once again issue the Spoiler Warning so don't come crying in the comments about them!

As much as the book has information, it clearly lacks some elements of the movie of which we have either heard about or seen in trailers/leaked images. Therefore, the contents I am presenting is not guaranteed to be 100% correct. I will list the major points I found first with detailed writing and will follow with the minor stuff.

Savin wears the Iron Patriot suit

Well, well, well. It seems Marvel has fooled us once again. Early on in filming in North Carolina, the Iron Patriot armor was noticed and everyone assumed that the man inside was James Badge Dale. Marvel of course debunked these rumors. But now that we have this tie-in book it is clear that they were fibbing. The book reads:

"And Tony and Rhodey had yet another problem on their hands: Savin was wearing the Iron Patriot armor and was heading toward Air Force One-for the President of the United States!"

You can see Savin in the suit above. Also, I would like to point out that earlier the book tells us that the Mandarin had taken it from Rhodey.

Maya Hansen is EVIL

From the very beginning, Rebecca Hall's Maya Hansen character has be shrouded in mystery. Well, at least who's side she was on. But now thank you to this book, we know that Maya Hansen is very, very bad.

"Tony snuck into the Mandarin's mansion. Unfortunately, as he was about to confront the villain, He was knocked out from behind!

He woke to find himself in a cell-with Rhodey! Out of the shadows stepped Killian and Maya. From them, Tony learned the Mandarin had the Iron Patriot armor and that Killian and Maya were working for the villain! Killian cackled with delight, but Tony had a plan."

Hmmm... I'm sure this will be a big plot twist for non-spoiler lovers! ;P

Pepper and President Ellis get kidnapped

We figured from the scene in the trailer that Pepper was in trouble, but we had no idea the President ends up being kidnapped!

After Tony catches up to Savin on Air Force One, they get into a huge battle where the fire repulsor blasts back at one another. One blast hit the exterior of the plane and people started flying out. Tony blasts Savin into a wall and the following commences:

"He dove down, and the passenger he had locked arms with then locked his arm with the next person falling. This continued with each falling passenger all the way down, resulting in a strange, midair monkey ladder.

During the commotion aboard Air Force One, Savin trapped the President with him inside the Iron Patriot suit and rocketed out of the plane with him. He had kidnapped President Ellis!

With the President in his grasp, the Mandarin released another video message.

The villain was holding the president high above an oil tanker. The Mandarin's plan was to ignite the oil onboard, causing a giant explosion and contaminating the waters of the Gulf Coast.

And to make the matters worse, the bomb was going to go off on December 25th-Christmas Day!"

From this, we know that the Mandarin is sure good at improvising! As for the Pepper kidnapping, the book does not specify how the Mandarin has taken her, but it does confirm she is at the docks.

The finale features the Iron Men vs. the Extremis Soldiers

No much of a surprise here, but at least we know that we are getting real, super-powered villains.

"All of Tony's Iron Man suits had come to save the day! There was HEARTBREAKER, RED SNAPPER, SILVER CENTURION, BONES, SHOTGUN, AND HAMMERHEAD! EVEN NIGHTCLUB, GEMINI, and the behemoth IGOR had come for a fight!

Wasting no time, the Iron Men quickly attacked, firing Repulsor beams and missiles at all of the super-powered Extremis guards. Explosions rang out as armors were destroyed and Extremis guards were defeated. Meanwhile, Rhodey ran off to rescue the President and reclaim the Iron Patriot armor while Tony went to save Pepper from a particularly large and intimidating Extremis guard."

What's interesting is that the book does not say the Mandarin comes in the final battle. In fact, it says that the Mandarin and Killian are "Still on the loose". If this part is true (though I think it is complete bull), we could definitely be looking at a Masters of Evil type thing.

The Mandarin's headquarters are in his Miami mansion

The Mandarin's base is his mansion in Miami. The relation to Osama Bin Laden aside, this seemingly proves that the Mandarin is American, or at least liver there. The book confirms numerous things like this being the location of "his lair" where he "conducts the video messages" and where him and "Killian get down do business".

Harley and Tony are attacked by Savin and Brandt

We've all heard about Harley through various interviews around the film. He seems like a great supporting character. With this, many were still concerned that we may not get any action at the time in the movie where him and Tony share the screen. Well fear not, because it seems that Savin and Brandt are continuously pursuing the billionaire superhero.

"Tony turned to see two people charging toward them, but they didn't look like regular people. Savin was glowing with energy and Brandt's hands were radiating heat. Using their enhanced abilities, they attacked Tony and Harley!

Yelling to Harley, Tony told him to use that silver capsule he gave him earlier. Harley did as instructed and threw the capsule at Savin. The capsule exploded, temporarily blinding Savin and allowing Harley to escape.
Meanwhile, Brandt had Tony cornered. But just as she was about to attack, Tony pulled back his sleeve to reveal a makeshift Repulsor ray. He fired a blast at Brandt, that knocked her across the street and into the snow!"

I'm personally really excited to see this Tony/Harley dynamic on the big screen!

Now for the smaller spoilers...

  • Tony is being interviewed outside the hospital, of which Happy is staying

  • The movie seems to be much like the first film in the sense of starting out with our hero in trouble, then flashing back to the beginning

  • In Tony's 1999 flashback, Killian was in a very unhealthy condition, but in present day, he's as fit as a horse

  • Tony is the one who completed the Extremis formula

  • More Iron Man 1 nostalgia comes in as Tony goes to the Middle East to fight terrorists

  • In the Middle East is where Tony is first introduced to the Mandarin as he threatens the US

  • Early on in the flick, Tony and Rhodey park their armors outside a diner

  • Tony appears to be having more heart issues as he gets pain and needs to leave the diner rather quickly

  • The Mandarin reads a fortune cookie on camera that says "You will destroy Iron Man today"

  • During the attack on Tony's mansion, the suit's missiles won't work so Tony throws them manually at the Choppers

  • Tony also uses other things like his Baby Grand piano to destroy them

  • The reason why Tony only has two pieces of the armor at a point in the film is because the rest of it was stuck in Harley's shed

  • The Mark XLII armor flies across the country numerous times to reach Tony

  • Tony blows up the XLII during the final battle

  • Tony gives Harley a high-tech science lab at the end

Well, that's all I'm giving you guys. Be sure to check out the book for even more spoilers! What do you guys think about all of this potentially revealing stuff? Be sure to voice your thoughts in the usual place!!

I flipped through the Junior Novel at work, and it seemed to end the same. With Mandarin still at large. Does that mean we could possibly have a Iron Man villain survive a movie?

DID NOT READ! I win! I did not succumb to the spoilers, like I did with some of the previous MCU movies, even if they were only minor. My willpower is working at its best...

So what is with that shot of savin, aboard AF1 without the suit on?

"So what is with that shot of savin, aboard AF1 without the suit on?"

I wondered that too. The only explanations I can come up with are:
1. The storybook made some things up to make it more exciting for kids.

2. The editing of the trailer tricks you into thinking it's the same scene. Sorta like in the Avengers trailer you'd see Tony getting tossed out the window, followed by Cap landing on the car.
TheFascinatingMan
TheFascinatingMan - 4/8/2013, 8:45 AM
I was also wondering this. Possibly he just took it off? I have no idea. Most likely editing

@rudah

Yeah, but the shot is taken from the first trailer where Savin wathces IM punch a hole into the plane.

Just for the record, because a lot of people read it as "rudah", it's pronounced "roo-uh", the D is silent.

I get what you're saying, and definitely agree...just have to see I guess. at this point I'm leaning more towards the book embellishing some, but still have to see how the sequence is really cut together.

Are you guys sure that's Savin? That doesn't look like James Badge Dale.
Ocelot
Ocelot - 4/8/2013, 9:56 AM
@ruadh &@IronVenom22 it's taggert in the iron patriot suit in the air force 1 attack scene not savin. Taggert is the one who attacks the president in the film
IronVenom22
IronVenom22 - 4/8/2013, 10:07 AM
@Ocelot Source?

ruadh
ruadh - 4/8/2013, 10:14 AM
Ocelot...looks way more like James Badge Dale in the police hat in the trailer, and the book says "Savin" in the armor. Obviously you could be totally right, but given the available data, you don't seem to be.
TheManFromMars
TheManFromMars - 4/8/2013, 10:25 AM
I actually think Ocelot is right.

Savin is on the plane scene, but NOT in the Iron Patriot suit, and considering their Comic Book counterparts, it makes sense that Coldblood (Savin) would be the experimented one (Extremis) and Firepower (Taggert) would be the one wearing a suit.
ruadh
ruadh - 4/8/2013, 10:27 AM
TheManFromMars, I agree, the logic is completely sound. Just going by what is shown. Of course the children's book could have merged the characters, and the movie will have Taggert in the armor.
Ocelot
Ocelot - 4/8/2013, 10:42 AM
@ruadh you're right when you say they've merged taggert/savin for the book, savin's got a much more larger role in the film than taggert, who's just a pilot and that's it

@IronVenom22 The disney featurette that was released a few weeks ago show the guy who plays taggert in the iron patriot armor. Also you can see Iron Patriot standing near savin during the scene where the president is heading for air force 1. Savin's also wearing similar clothes to the rest of men who are lining up, he's clearly not in the armor

Jack Taggert infiltrates the Iron patriot armour not Eric Savin..In these leaked set pics, it's Ashley Hamilton who plays Jack Taggert in the armour:

According to the Marvel wiki data base, jack Taggert:
Skilled Aviator: He is a skill pilot and is capable of maneuvering the Firepower armor.
Skilled Combatant: Jack Taggert military training made him a very skilled hand to hand combat.
It only makes sense if he's the one to steal/infiltrate the Iron Patriot armour given he role in the comics

Judging from the snide spoiler warnings of this article, I find it interesting that some of these guys still don't understand why people were mad about the spoiler situation.

Obviously it isn't simply that spoilers exist. It's that huge blatant spoiler images and headlines were placed front and center on the home page of the site, taking away any freedom of choice the reader may have had whether or not to look at them. Why is this such a hard concept for some?
