"Iron Man 2" Will Not Lead Into "Avengers"

Jon Favreau has confirmed that "Iron Man 2" will not end on a cliffhanger for "Avengers" to resolve.

So far, we've learned from the "Iron Man 2" cast: War Machine will make a significant appearance, Black Widow could be good or evil, and Sam Rockwell will reinvent the character of Justin Hammer. Director Jon Favreau weighed in at Comic-Con with his own details on the film. He stated that the sequel won't leave an open-ended cliffhanger for Marvel's 2012 "Avengers" movie.

"We're working towards 'Avengers,' but by the same token we want to resolve this film and make ['Iron Man 2'] play on its own," Favreau told MTV News. "It's not a serial. It's a self-contained film."

Since Marvel Studios began planted movie crossover appearances in "The Incredible Hulk" and the first "Iron Man," continuity buffs have had a great deal to speculate about given Marvel's ambitious calendar of releases, including "Thor" and "Captain America: The First Avenger." Favreau stressed that while the movies would all be working off each other, his focus remains on making this film work on its own.

"It's not building towards a cliffhanger that's the next movie," he explained. "It's about wrapping up our story and making it a complete tale."

Are you glad to hear "Iron Man 2" won't conclude with an open ending? How would you like to see Marvel's upcoming films weave together? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

its actually good news that Favreau wants to concentrate on making this a good movie rather than just tying it into The Avengers and sacrificing Iron Man 2's story. Still some sort of build up to The Avengers would be nice..!

It's good the Favereau wants to conclude this arc. He has stated before that Acengers will be like Iron Man 3 and I would prefer Stark to have at least the next story arc completed without worrying about Whiplash of Hammer while he is dealing with the Avengers.

It is my sincere hope that the directors of Captain America and Thor feel the same way.

The Avengers movie is indeed the big tamale so to speak, but let's be where we are shall we?

Iron Man 2 should NOT end in a cliffhanger to be resolved in The Avengers. I could certainly see a little teaser after the credits that would build towards Avengers, but these individual films must stand on their own. I would also hope that we'll see a buildup of things with the Mandarin that can lead to him fighting Iron Man in the third film.

It's better that Iron Man 2 doesn't leave us with a cliff hanger for Avengers to finish because we'd have to wait too long. Thor won't shed any light on the cliff hanger, and neither will Cap.

I agree, MANDARIN for IRON MAN 3!!

Marcolanni,

What a truly excellent question. What indeed will happen once Avengers has come to pass. I don't know the answer, but I have a few quesses.

My first thought is..... nothing. Nothing of any consequence anyway. If Avengers is amazingly good and gets a Dark Knight like reception from fans and critics alike and makes boat loads of money it will be the pinnacle of all achievements in the field. The top. To us comic book fans, it would be the very ultimate film of all time, and will set a high bar that will probably never be out done. It would be very difficult to see beyond that.

or there's also

Someday in the future, a JLA movie. Something like that.
And of course there will be other comic book movies to come. Dr. Strange. And there's been talk of FF and DD reboots which I support. The Superman franchise is far from over.
But frankly I truly can not concieve of any one movie being bigger or more expensive or more important to fans than an Avengers movie. Somehting like Civil War would likely be too big and too expensive, and nobody would be happy if they couldn't get Hugh jackman for Wolverine for it or Ed Norton for Banner. Sadly, in Hollywood things like that are very hard to do. Imagine trying to manage the egos and the contracts of all those actors all at once. I don't see that ever happening unless it's animated.

this good news. i want all of the next couple of movies to stand on they're own. use the after credits to build up for the avengers. and same thing if they make an iron man 3. let it be its own movie with mandarin and war machine

I think it will make more sense for Captain America to be the lead-in movie. The title (The First Avenger), the different era, Cap's frozen transition from Golden Age to Silver Age... Have him win his battle, but not the war, and then end up frozen. My big question-- Will the kill Bucky?

almost guaranteed we will have to wait for all the credits to finish rolling to see some 20 second clip that has something to do with the Avengers

ya teabag, west coast avengers, woo hoo! lol. ya im glad this will not have a cliff hager ending, the movies are waaay too far away from each other, and whos to say avengers wont get pushed bak further away again? they will have sumtin to show it moving towards the avengers though, seeing as iron man had the after credits scene, and hulk had its ending. another thing, jus cuz tony showed up in incredible hulk does not necissarily mean hulk will be in the avengers. He was talkin to general ross, not banner. Hulk will prob be in it, but im jus sayin

woo hoo!

Cliff-hangers worked 50 years ago cuz they had the next episode to play the next week. Cliff-hangers in movies nowadays suck balls, cuz we have to wait years for the next one. Or even months, look at Lord of the Rings (I know they werent cliff-hangers, but close enough).

@ Ironmarvel, they said there would be Hulk characters in the movie, General Ross is a Hulk character, maybe supersoldier serum?

The after credits scene should only lead in to Iron Man 3. Then in Iron Man 3, the after credits scene for that can lead into the Avengers (if they can get IM3 done before The Avengers).

They just need to start weaving all Marvel movies togeather so it can seem like ther're not the only people that exsist. That's why I thought it would be nifty to somehow throw S.H.E.I.L.D. into Spider-Man 4! And then in Iron Man 2 they could have tony be watching T.V. or something and show a little footage and like a cover story of another attack from the hulk. THEY ALL NEED TO SEEM LIKE ONE UNIVERSE!!!

Don´t you guys see? The ultimate ComicBook movie pinacle AFTER The Avengers will be Wonder Man: The movie hehe lol!! couldn´t help it! i was a big fan of that character in the 90´s! ;-]

Avengers WCoast has the potential to suck in the big screen.. i see it more like a TV-spin off ONCE The Avengers movie comes out... kind of the ongoing Smallville stuff. Who knows?

On a side note: i note certain bitterness in Fav´s comments.. sounds like he is not as INVOLVED in the other Avengers-tie in movies as he would like to.

Marvel could actually [frick] up big time on this. We have alot of "reinventions" of characters... Whiplash, Crymson Dynamo, Justin Hammer... In any adaptation, "reinventions" are the worst possible thing.

I agree with Jimthefan, they need to boost the momentum of the Juggernaut Thor. I would love to see a scene at the end of IM2 or IM3 hinting towards the almighty Thor. The scene could play out like this...Stark at SHEILD HQ talking/flirting to/with Furys Secretary trying to get in Furys office when he notices a SHIELD agent bypass both of them and bursts into Nicks office all dramatically and what not...Stark stalls...he hears both the agent and Fury talking rather loudly but can't make out anything...Stark(intrigued) walks in....catches the tail end of their conversation about Mjolnir and Asgard. Fury looks over at a puzzled Stark and says "Your new partner is enroute...how well do you know old Norse mythology?" the end. I'm just ranting what do you all think?

It's a good decision to not leave it open ended.

I, too, agree that the idea of a cliffhanger isn't what they should end with. Ironman is to be a trilogy and if any cliffhanger should be introduced, it should most likely be in the last installment. But not even then should it happen. I'm thinking maybe Cap should have the cliffhanger where he is asked to join the team and show all of the avengers at very end. Awsome pose and black out...

The Avengers will b awsome!!!
