First off, I just want to say that I was one of the select few who enjoyed IRON MAN 3. However, I do understand why some of my fellow CBM fans did not like the film. The CBM community has been divided on this movie since it first hit theatres. Some, like myself, enjoyed the movie and probably saw it more than once. Others hated it and wanted nothing to do with the movie ever again. That being said, how has IRON MAN 3 managed to make into the top five highest grossing movies of all time? The answer is simple really and here it is... CBM fans are not the only movie goers in the world. I know, that's a huge shock, but it's true. Let's analyse a few of the the main issues that many had with IRON MAN 3 and discuss the effect on (A)CBM fans and (B)the average movie goer.

1. There was too much humour... it was simply too funny.

(A) CBM Fans:

Is too there such a thing as too funny? Apparently, Shane Black found a way to make a CBM too funny, as this was a big complaint from the CBM community. We all love Tony's witty quips and a little physical humour goes a long way. However, for CBM fans, it seems that the comedy was a little (for some it was 'a lot') over done.

(B) Average Movie Goer:

Everybody loves comedy and there was plenty of it in IRON MAN 3. For the average movie goer, the comedy in this movie would been simply entertaining. For the average movie goer, there is no such thing as too funny.

2. Too much Tony, not enough Iron Man.

(A) CBM Fans:

I have heard this one from a few of my local friends, but haven't heard much about it here on CBM. So, I'm not sure if this has been a hot topic on this site, but I know a few of my friends who were pretty ticked about how little of Iron Man there actually was in the film. CBM want Iron Man action and, for some, there just wasn't enough in the third instalment. Personally, I loved the fact that this movie was more about Tony and his personal struggles.

(B) Average Movie Goer:

Only a CBM fan would've been upset with this issue. The average movie goer wouldn't been upset as long there was a purpose/reason to Tony not using his armour. The reason was fairly obvious, he had no access to his hall of armour and the one suit he did have access was busted. Besides, it was fun to see what Tony could do without the suit.

3. The Mandarin Twist.

(A) CBM fans:

This was the big one for a lot of people in the CBM community. This was the twist that rocked the CBM nation and, for many, it was the one thing they couldn't let go. The fact that The Mandarin was simply some patsy paid to act like a terrorist was too great of a change from the comic mythology for many to accept. This one issue alone pushed most over the edge from 'I don't really care for this film' to 'I HATE THIS F#*KING MOVIE!'

(B) Average Movie Goer:

The average movie goer loves to be surprised. While this plot point may have pushed many CBM fans over the edge, everybody else loved it. The twist was such a HUGE shock and took everybody in the theatre by surprise. Only a CBM fan would have really been effected by this twist.

The conclusion from this is that IRON MAN 3 may not have been widely accepted as a good CBM, but it has been accepted as a great movie in general. While some CBM fans may have decided to block out the memory of this movie, the average movie goer has embraced it and launched into the top five highest grossing movies of all time. Marvel has successful bridged the gap between CBMs and the average movie audience. That's the reason for IRON MAN 3's success.

I'm an Iron Man fanboy, and I won't ignore that. But at the same time, I don't care. I'm glad they're making money, with inflation or not, which means more movies. That's my bottom line.

I liked the twist and I love the comic version as well.

They are two different things, people need to realize this.

@VIRILEMAN - I enjoyed it too...

@ruadh - That's a fair statement... more $$$ = more movies

@AlexanderLykins - Larger scale is something I think every fan wants, so fingers crossed

@NightAvenger - That's a very level heading way of looking at it... I like it!

I don't get why people say this movie is too funny. I heard that a lot and was surprised at how many dramatic parts were in it.

The twist doesn't bother me so yeah.

I enjoyed it.

Isn't this common sense?? And i don't mean to sound like a dick, but i can't believe that there are comic fans out there that don't understand why it's doing so well.

@NightAvenger Normally I'd agree with you, but I have recently done some thinking, this could very well be the only Mandarin we ever get on screen, and if it were two different things, they shouldn't have called it Mandarin, they ruined a character, you can't say they didn't because they did, they turned Iron Man's arch enemy, his Joker, his Green Goblin, His Lex Luthor, and they made him into a joke played up for laughs, this would have been an okay twist, just as unpredictable if the real villain was a good villain. The main reason the twist didn't go over well is because Killian was the same villain we got in Ironman 1 and Ironman 2, if they had used Hammer instead of Killisn, that would have been better than yet another evil business man who goes crazy at the end.

The humor really messed with the overall tone of the film, and my father and my sister loved the mandarin twist as well

Does that mean the whole "faithful to the source material" phase of Marvel is over and now they're gonna do everything they can to appeal to regular people, even if it means pissing off fans by changing the characters until they're unrecognizable?
sikwon
sikwon - 5/27/2013, 12:25 AM
Please dont compair mandarin to the joker. Its not even close. My only concern is the same as maryboo... how far are they really going to stray? I think once they lay the foundation of a character they will move a bit further but i cant see to many instances ware the are completely diregarding source. Iron Man is in that unique position ware unless it was just a terrible movie people were going to see it. The kid got annoying and i hated extremis pepper. Although she was hot as hell.

I love the MCU so i thought this movie was awesome.

PS: People need to realise that Trevor was never the Mandarin. Guy Pearce's character was the Mandarine. It was more of a amalgamation of Mallen and the Mandarine from the comics. Similar to how Mickey Rourke's character in IM2 was an amalgamation of Crimson Dynamo and Whiplash from the comics.

This was always pretty onvious to me but since Iron Man was released I realised how important some fans think they are.
It's like the success of a movie at the box office depended on their opinion when it really is not.

Good job clearing their head Xandera.
Iron Man 3 had the best third act of the three.

there are many factors that contribuited to Iron Man 3 mega-suscess but the biggest reason Iron Man 3 is going to do over 1.2 billion worldwide and over 400 million in the usa is because of AVENGERS.

Lets pretend Avengers never existed and Iron Man 3 was a followup to Iron Man 2 which was a solid fun movie but inferior to the first Iron Man.

I think if there was not Avengers, Iron Man 3 would have made less than both Iron Man in the USA, since the second was considered a minor disappointment but it would have over performed worldwide since those types of movies are generally increasing b.o numbers overseas in the past few years, especially in 3D

Iron Man 3 prediction (without Avengers in 2012)
270 million USA/ 700 Million worldwide

Iron Man
318 million USA/ 585 million worldwide

Iron Man 2
312 million USA/623 million worlwide

you fotgot about Pepper Potts powers. For me this was the major let down. Pepper was so feminine and sweet in the previous movie and then suddenly becomes a killer machine and kills the main villain for the second time. First time was when she pushed the butttom to activate te reactor to kill Iron Monger in the first IM movie.

If it wasn't for the unnecessary humor in the more intense scenes, this would've been the best Iron Man film and possibly the best solo movie yet. But, while it was an overall fun, escapist, superhero blockbuster. It definitely had its darker and more dramatic moments.

I definitely felt bad when Pepper fell. Marvel gets a lot of trash for the Mandarin twist (the comicbook version would never have worked, the way the twist worked was brilliant), more humor than needed (I can see that reason) and Pepper's "death". This was Tony at his most vulnerable and when Pepper fell, you really felt the emotion. You felt the sadness Tony felt. Marvel definitely delivers one the more dramatic points of characters, story and the film as a whole. Despite the unnecessary humor throughout Iron Man 3 in some of the intense and serious moments. Moments like Tony's anxiety and Pepper "dying" gives me hope that Thor: The Dark World and especially, Captain America: The Winter Soldier will definitely have the dark, dramatic scenes to balance out the action and humor in the film. I think "The Winter Soldier" will have least amount of humor as far as the solo films go.

Phase Two will blow Phase One out of the water. Marvel continues to rise higher and higher.

Agree with the article 100%!

The CBM purists in us will never be satisfied no matter how much effort directors and studios go about with their adaptations.

So Shane Black had a better idea: entertain the moviegoers. And his formula worked (action+ heroism/bravery + angst and internal conflict + comedy moments) and translated into billions of dollars at the box office.

So sue him...:D
UltimateTypeface
UltimateTypeface - 5/28/2013, 5:32 AM
WHAT??

Why not give the actual material a chance and not wank all over a great story line and Ironman's greatest enemy!

Shane Black was never going to be faithfull to the original material - he had to put his own, arse-pumping twist to it.

Any director with a bee's dick of talent could have made the Mandarin a relevant and menacing villain - but he took a cheap shot.

Shit movie.

Needed more MCU action.

A big reason this movie made money is because of the goodwill associated the movies that preceded it (All Marvel Movies). I've been told by several people they are going to wait to see Thor because of this movie (they're not comic fans).

@UltimateTypeface: The Mandarin from the comics would never have worked well on the big screen at all. The translation would've sucked. It was better they did it this way, it was best for the story.

I've been noticing that people have been defending the Mandarin, however, how would those people feel if something similar were to be done with, say, the Joker!? Or Lex Luthor!? Mandarin is to Iron Man as what is Lex Luthor is to Superman, Joker to Batman, Green Goblin to Spider-Man. No one in the movie industry would EVER do that to those villains, but since Iron Man was not a household name before, they took liberties they shouldn't have.

People say that the Mandarin wouldn't have worked, maybe not, we'll never know, however it would've introduced magic to MCU and opened the door to introduce Doctor Strange.

@OmegaDaGod - Well put my friend...

@Fangz - Dude, you totally wrote an article in my comments section... NICE! I agree completely with everything you said... you know, I actually had someone ask me the other day if we'll see Superman in the next Avengers movie. That just shows there how much the general audience knows about the source material.
