Why The Justice League Should Be a Two Part Film

It's a trend that we've seen steadily growing within the film industry. Why make my audience pay $10 once for single movie when I can cut the film in half and charge them $10 twice? It can either be described as marketing genius or a blatant attempt to snatch money from our pockets. But either way, one cannot argue with the results.

When the Harry Potter and Twilight franchises did this with their final installments they each put two films within the top 100 highest grossing films of all time earning roughly $2.2 and $1.5 billion at the global box office respectively. Even though Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End do not contain Part 1 and Part 2 in their titles, one could argue that they followed the same pattern: they told one continuous story and ended on a cliffhanger. Both films sit within the top 20 highest grossing films producing roundabout 2 billion in global box office dollars. The most recent example is that of The Hobbit Trilogy. Whereas few think that this story could have been told successfully in one movie, many more criticized the decision to turn Tolkien's shortest novel into a three-part series. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey did quite well for itself reaching just over $1 billion at the box office globally. No doubt the next installments will perform comparably.

The lucrativeness of this method cannot be questioned, but what are the other benefits? Well the most obvious advantage is the extra room for plot. Even though it could be argued as being over indulgent to fans of the source material, having more time for character development and exposition can help bolster a movie. No prospective film could benefit more from this attribute than the inevitable Justice League film adaptation. I say inevitable because this film is all but announced given the obvious direction that WB/DC is headed. And with recent developments, it may turn out that the Batman vs. Superman title is just a smokescreen for The Justice League being released in 2015. Hey, a guy can dream right?

No matter when it is released, making The Justice League a two part film would allow for the inclusion of more heroes because there would be ample time to introduce these characters without a preceding solo movie. Hypothetically, the heroes could spend the first installment fighting their own minor skirmishes separately (with the possibility of a cool team up being thrown in) before deciding to unite near the conclusion. Then, Justice League Part 2 can start right away with 160 minutes of the JLA kicking butt and taking names without having to worry about any exposition. Imagine the last 30 minutes of The Avengers stretched over an entire film. That can be achieved by making a two-part Justice League film. There is plenty of source material to choose from so as long as it is well written, separating the story into two films should not be redundant and tiresome.

I would speculate as to what the plot of a two-part Justice League movie would be, but frankly I'm not a fan fiction writer and I'm sure many of you have better ideas. Please let me know what you think. Thanks for reading and thumbs up if you liked the article.

A 2 Part Justice league movie would be amazing.

No I have tremendous faith in Zack Snyder to do a one picture Justice League film, all you have to do is watch Watchmen. He showed he could balance plot, back story, character development, and multiple character plot lines. The only reason to do two would be as you stated, a cash grab so to say. Yet if they pull this film off as I think they want to, introduce multiple characters to hopefully headline multiple franchises, then Justice League will not have to be two films. Rather the series of potential solo films would generate huge anticipation and excitement for a proper Justice League sequel.

The lack of confirmed title for Batman vs Superman, along with WW casting, makes me think Justice League is what we're getting now.

I would be totally on board with that. Darkseid as the villain. The first movie could build up Darkseid and his plans, maybe have him send small invasion force to earth for the finale of the first film and to set up the JL getting together.

Part 2 could be Darkseid actually coming to earth personally with the rest of his army. All out war.

I've been saying for a while now that if Marvel is really going to attempt an Infinity Gauntlet story, then it should be a multi-part movie as well. The size of a story like that would require it.

The first part could end with Thanos killing off half of the living beings in the universe...end it on a really dark and hopeless seeming moment. Then part 2 could be the remaining heroes, both cosmic and non-cosmic, joining together to take down Thanos.

Or you could just build up the characters in other movies and not need to have 2 justice league films.

The Infinity Gauntlet is horrible. They spend (let's count em...) four issues setting up the idea that the Earth's Mightiest Heroes are going to go stop Thanos. Only by issue #4 do they actually attack him, epically fail, and we realize that it was all just a distraction for the Silver Surfer to zoom in and make a grab for the gauntlet....

...except he misses it.

So Warlock's only solution really is to wait until Thanos let's his body go, let someone else grab the Gauntlet, and hope that she undoes everything Thanos had committed.

That would be godawful.

As for the article's notion of splitting it up - I'm all for it.

But don't call it "Justice League Part 1", and "Justice League Part 2". Take a page from the Lord of the Rings there. Write a story worthy of two movies and get everyone invested, not bored.

@soto
I don't like that they made Mockingjay a two-parter, for sure, and the Hobbit is CRAWLING - I mean I GUESS I could understand two movies, but three - no... the last one is going to be a sleeper.

Mockingjay is... well it's the least popular book of the trilogy. Catching Fire was LOADED with exposition, and yet they managed to adapt it almost perfectly (minor petty gripes aren't enough to make it unfaithful. To have the third one, which I describe as Return of the Jedi with PTSD.... put into two movies. It's like making Deer Hunter two movies. Completely unnecessary.

Doesn't matter. Goku can destroy superman. Let alone the whole justice league. Live action DBZ. FTW

@SotoJuiceMan: Having read Deathly Hallows, the movies really did need to be separated into two films. Although, I would have enjoyed over three hours of Harry Potter, it did the books more justice by splitting into two movies. Everyone else has been copying Deathly Hallows because of Part 2's success.

@Tainted87: Really? I mean, I respect opinions but personally, I really enjoyed The Infinity Gauntlet. Now, I don't think we'll see an direct adaptation but, I think Avengers 3 will respect the story but take it in their own way and make it unique. The way the Infinity Stones have been used so far, Thanos having them all would be interesting.

As far as this article goes, It wouldn't surprise me if Batman vs. Superman did end up turning out to be Justice League. Here's my gripe. 1: Zack Snyder directing. No, I'm not saying people shouldn't like Snyder. But, judging from my personal taste in his films, he really hasn't qualified himself for Justice League. I'd prefer David Yates (Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince, Deathly Hallows part 1 and 2) because he can tell an emotionally gripping story with great action sequences. Snyder, I feel especially with Goyer writing, wouldn't give the film the substance it would need especially if you'll be introducing The Flash and Wonder Woman as well. 2: If it is indeed Justice League, two parts would be a bad idea. Sure, people would be interested in the first film but, it would be a mistake to make it into two parts. If people were to not respond to Justice League all that well, then Part Two would do even less in my opinion. Therefore, I disagree with this article.

I feel like the picture shown at comic con was just to announce that Batman would be in the film and that JL will actually happen in 2015. If not a huge after credits scene including Wonder Woman and Flash will happen. Or maybe WW will have a bigger role. Who can tell now
